i think this deserves its own thread.

who thinks they just let off the gas because the D was playing so well and they just didnt want to show more than they had to to Cal?

i am in that camp only because that is what i hope the case is.

otherwise, it shows a complete lack of killer instinct on the part of the players and the coaching staff. that 2nd half O was like watching snails ****.

if the staff didnt want to show too much to Cal, it would have been nice to see them go under center and pound out an 80 yard, five and a half minute drive and control the clock some. i see it as kinda a wasted oppertunity.

    thoughts?

I think they let up, for whatever reason. I also think trying to go into a shell and rely on the OL and Speedy to grind out yardage is the worst possible scenario for this offense at this point.

And it shouldn't be, because the OL has way too much ability to suck this badly. I put their issues 100% on their position coach and, to an extent, the offensive scheme...

I think the coaching staff at halftime believed there was no chance that CSU could score 17 pts unless we turned the ball over and helped them out. That is why CU played very conservatively in the 2nd half.

So, I guess cal doesn't care about showing cu their stuff ? Okay, that could be part of it but please, 7 points? It was poor execution.

I think that if the O has so few ticks up their sleeves that we need to pull back in the second half of the first game against a team we should rightfully smear without much effort, then the O is still a pathetic bunch that will fold when they face true opposition.

Better not be the case - those f**kers danced on our field last year and hired a g**dam trash-talking airplane - we should have run this thing up to 70. This team needs to learn how to play a full 60 minute game, not bulls**t mind games with future opponents.

I fear that today's performance was just another sign of what kind of team we are.

but, they didnt even really try. most of the running plays they did were from the shotgun formation and the back end persuit was the killer almost every time.

look at that TD drive where SM broke the record with the TD catch. they were running very effectivly and i believe from under center up to about the 50 yard line when they went to the air. i would have liked to see that more in the 2nd half.

And we should be able to run it up considerably without tipping our hand much. That is what concerns me.

If you are so worried that your offense can't whip someone's ass even if they know what you are going to do then you have no business coaching at this level. Good teams don't give a crap if the other team knows what you've got. As a matter of fact, THE MORE you show the harder it is for them to prepare for you.

I'm not afraid to say what I believe. Hawkins was brought back so I felt like it was incumbent on me to support him and the team at least until this year. I honestly believe that we have talent. I honestly believe that we should have whipped the rammies by 5 TD's. I gave Hawkins the benefit of the doubt coming into this season. Today, he showed me nothing. I expected fire. We did not play with fire. I expected electricity. We had none. I'm really disappointed in what I saw. I think the kids on this team are good enought to play with most teams, not all, in the Big XII. I think the coaching staff, specifically Hawkins, Kiesau, and Johnson, let the kids and the fans down, even though we won.

My only hope is that after we got up 24 zip, we kind of lost interest. But if that is true, then I am even more disappointed.

that is the problem in a nutshell-- no killer instinct. they don't teach it, they don't emphasize it, so the players don't have it.

plus, they did turtle in the second half with the playcalling.

still, we have some fundamental coaching philosophies that drive me bat**** crazy:

    1. don't get too high or too low.
    2. finesse rather than power.
    3. play not to lose.

    Exactly!!!
Where is the passion and heart that CU football used to play with?
It used to be personal. It used to be about pride.
I miss those days soooo much!!!!!

Maybe we need an offense like Oregon's. And then I woke up.

We only had 7 incomplete passes all game, It looks like we shut down the passing once we got that third touchdown.

I wanted to face Cal next after having built up a ton of momentum coming off this game. Although the win helps, I wanted to see us really step on the gas and destroy the Rams in the 2nd half. Instead it looked like we let off the gas, which IMO, is not the way to build momentum and confidence going into a tough non-conference road game.

59-0....at halftime! And that's against a UNM team that's only a tad hair worse than CSU.

    toss on the optimistic hat....

the CU O did what they needed to to. they scored points when it mattered. when it didnt matter, they didnt make the mistakes to put the other team in a position to make a game of it. they showed what they needed to in order to win. someone posted earlier that giving the opposing team lots to think about is a good position to be in. well, the other side of that coin is to leave them wondering. i think that can be just as a good position to be in.

i really want to believe its the latter.

teams make the most improvment from week one to two. IF the o line can clean up thier mental mistakes and not allow them selves to beat themselves, you might have a decent O that can take advantage of what the D gives them. i think that is the type of O we are looking at this year.

I'm hoping that once the game was for practical purposes over, the Buffs put away their offensive tools so they're fresh for Cal.

Liked the kickers today. No missed FG, and with the exception of the opening kickoff, everything went through the end zone.

booting the kicks out of the end zone was a great thing today. that is a real asset to the D.

I'd love for someone to give me one actual real example of [team] going into offensive shell during a game, so as to not reveal too much of playbook to [future opponent].

    And that strategy actually working........

As Syko pointed out earlier in this thread, Cal didn't seem too concerned about showing too much.
