Here's what I see as far as recruiting priorities:

    1. We need tight ends. I'd take a JUCO here to go with another freshman.
    2. We need a fullback. Maybe we can find one in the JUCO ranks. Maybe Greer makes the switch.
    3. We need guards. Dannewitz or Harris can move inside, but we need some maulers in there.
    4. We could use a JUCO DT. Pericak and Bonsu are the only guys we can trust at this point.
    5. We need to figure out whether we'll be a full-time 3-4 on the DE issue. If so, Henington, Poston and Pericak move over and it's not as bad as it seems at first glance.
    6. We need some OLBs. If a 4-3, it's a moderate need. If a 3-4, it's a desperate need.
    7. We need at least 1 CB who can challenge for immediate playing time.
    8. We could use a safety in this class.
    9. We better not recruit any specialists.

We are going to be young at QB and RB. There's not much we can do about that. I don't like having a young WR corps with a young QB, so maybe a JUCO would work there but I doubt we'd go that direction.

But it looks like we still have 11 spots left even without any attrition from the current roster. That's enough to fill all needs and then take "best available athlete" for a few spots above that. Maybe even look at taking some transfers, especially if we can find a graduated senior who could play right away (WR would be nice).

    Thoughts?

What are your top targets/ priorities?

This would be a good thread to use for asking any questions you might have on needs, who our top targets are at different positions and where we are with certain guys you might be interested in.

I was thinking we could do a recruiting chat Wednesday night for an hour ahead of the BuffChips radio show to go through recruiting and answer any questions.

Juda Parker is playing, got him in the wrong spot.

    Agreed on your points.
Top Needs Remaining: TE, FB, S, OLB.

Ugh - we need a lot of help at safety. I was ignorant as to how thin we are there.

We seem to be overloaded at Center, and too thin at Guard although I could see some of the smaller tackles sliding inside as Nik suggested.

At safety, we could be in even worse shape if Harlos, who's a bit of a tweener, moves to linebacker.

Can I get some speed please? I like our strength and conditioning guy so I feel we can get stronger even if we get kids who are on the thin side. But man we need to increase team speed. I'd take almost 1 of each position (outside of a few where we are probably strong for a while like QB/RB maybe CB) and go for that fastest player we can find at each position (like WR, DT, LB, OT). It is no secret our special teams are probably the worst in the nation right now and it would be great to get some new guys who could come in and play on ST right away because they are fast enough too, and not risk our starters next year. I really feel that CU has underestimated the importance of special teams for many years now and it has shown on the scoreboard. And again, ST is a way to get FR and RS FR into games without starting responsibility while they learn the playbook and bulk up.

Looks like we better switch to a real 3-4 or start recruiting DE's.

We need quick but Bigger OLB's for the 3-4. We also need some bigger bodies up front. A couple of 300 lb guys would be nice. CU players must have went on some kind of diet cause obi was 310 and he's listed at 290.

That's a really important observation. It's like that on both lines. Blacken did not like the way our S&T program had built our players. He thought they looked like a bunch of unathletic, inflexible power lifters. This offseason was spent transforming their bodies with a focus on core strength and flexibility. In the process, they got too light. Give it another year and we'll be seeing 300+ pounders that are built a lot more athletically. Another part of the rebuilding effort and fixing the things that were broke.

Liloa's absence is interesting. He hasn't even travelled and I don't think he is still injured

Good stuff! Given the current depth chart/needs and some of the recent news, what's a reasonable expectation for the rest of the class? Something along line of:

    Bafaro
    Harper
    Pennel
    Wes Brown
    Solomon
    Hasty
    Hooker
    Weinreich

That would seem to leave 3-5 slots for BPA. That seems like a solid finish to me, but it would be a lot better if they could land at least one more big-time target: McNamara, Kozan, Callahan, Thurston, Hamilton, etc. Does that sound reasonably close at this point?

    Couple of questions:

    1. Is Creer still at RB or has he been moved (while red-shirting)?

    2. Isn't Jack Harris a RS/F this year?

    3. Hard to believe we don't have a single FB on the roster after this year (walk-on's not included)

    4. Position focus: (offense) TE, FB, G // (defense) DE, DT, CB, OLB

    5. Potential gain by recruiting JC's: (offense) FB, G // (defense) DE

    My observations:

    1. If you want to understand our struggles on special teams, take a look at the WRs and DBs. Not a whole lot of special players there.
    2. We need a feature RB. I like some of the players there, but I am not sure I want any of the guys returning next year carrying the ball 20 times a game.
    3. Think it is imperative we sign three TEs in this class. Not comfortable with either Thornton or Slavin as a starter.
    4. We need to sign 5-6 DL in this class. Then sign another four in the 2013 class.
    5. If we can get a couple athletic OLBs to go with Norgard, I think we are setting up the LB depth very well.
    6. We need more speed and athleticism in the secondary.

If I'm being honest, I think one of our priorities should be helping about 3/4 of the Jr/Sr classes to "move on" to other opportunities. It shocked me to see how weak those classes really are.

    Good post nik.

I think a JUCO DT and a JUCO TE are pretty much a necessity at this point. Beyond that, DE, DT, OLB, CB, and S all need massive talent upgrades.

for FB, slider mentioned it, but maybe Schany here? Thomas Brown could also work.

WR, seems like we're hell bent on getting another one be it Countryman or Harper. I'm betting we see some attrition at this position.

OL could use some interior guys and depth at tackle is always nice, but I won't be pissed if we don't land Davidson or Cyburt. We need someone to pair with Asiata for the years to come.

DT: We need that Pennell kid. Darrian Dyson and Kafuvalu would be awesome for 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT.

ILB: looks pretty good; if we're running a true 3-4 it's nice to see some added size here.

CB: lots of bodies.. I'd love to see us get Will Jackson or Tyler Hasty. We need to take a chance on those guys.

S: Still can't believe we're taking Manea with his injury issues.. Solomon sounds great to me + one more.

Kick return ability: We have a serious lack of talent in this department. I'm thinking Gerald Thomas will be great here, but who else? DD Goodson? Erich Wilson? Austin Vincent? Alex Jackson would be pretty sweet if we could find a spot for him. Coutryman has good speed, kid needs some pounds, though.

A JUCO WR would be nice. I would like to see an upperclassmen come in to pair with P.Rich so he doesn't get double teamed all of next year. I hope McCullough develops because he should be able to exploit teams on the slant using his size if he gets quicker.
We need to convert a TE/RB to FB for next season. I would like one that can catch the ball.
I want the kid from NY to come in at NT and I like the kid from Washington too. That would give us some big boys on the line for this class.
I would like to see one OLB added to the class unless Harlos is moving to that position.
I am hoping we play a tandem of RB's next year with one of our smaller guys playing on 3rd downs. Screens are a very good weapon in our current offense so our RB's really need to work on catching the ball for the rest of this season.
We need to get another OT in here and an OG.
