CU Heads To Louisville To Race On Championships Course

BOULDER — When Ammar Moussa and his Colorado cross country teammates toe the start line for Saturday’s NCAA Pre-Nationals Invitational in Louisville, Ky., their number one goal won’t be to win the meet.

The Buffs’ top priority will be to learn the course — because in a little more than a month, they’ll be returning to E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer Park for the NCAA Championships, where the CU men will be aiming for their third consecutive national title and the women will have their sights set on a top-three finish.

“It’s a big advantage that you get when you know the layout of the course, what’s up and what’s down,” said Moussa, who finished fifth in last year’s national championships in Terre Haute, Ind., leading the Buffs to their second straight national title. “Terre Haute, it was the eighth or ninth time I’d run it. You know where the moves are going to be made. It blows my mind that coaches think you can go to Louisville the day before the race for the first time and expect the team to know the course.”

While the Buffs annually make a trip to the Pre-Nationals part of their schedule, not all of the other top programs do so. In fact, more than half of the top 30 men’s teams in the nation and 20 of the top 25 women’s programs will be in Wisconsin this weekend for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

Best of luck to the cross country teams Saturday morning as they face their 1st real tough competition of the year.

It looks like live updates on the race will be available at http://www.ustfccca.org/2015/10/featured/2015-national-results-wall-live-cross-country-updates-2 (including "a live breakdown podcast shortly after the conclusion of the men’s race"). Assume CU cross country twitter will also be providing updates- https://twitter.com/cubuffstrack .

A few other preview articles from the running websites I could quickly find-

Men's race starting momentarilly. Sounding cool this morning- nice weather for Buffaloes to run in.

From the "live results wall" linked to in OP-
Tyler Mayforth: Time to see if Colorado's men can be as dominant as New Mexico's women were yesterday.

Tyler Mayforth
New Mexico's women scored 32 points at the adidas Invitational yesterday, so keep that in mind.

Buffs top runners appeared to be 5th, 9th, 14th, 15th and 46th (with the last being frosh John Dressel, so no redshirt for him this year- great 1st race in Colorado uni.). Should be close, but those finishes will normally be enough to win.

And the women's race has begun-

Sounds like the CU men did get the win over Oregon.

On the women's side, sounds like one of the favorites already in the lead and I assume therefore pushing the pace at least some. This isn't going to be a "sit and kick" race, at least for the field.

In women's race, Erin Clark in lead pack of ~9 runners. Oregon has 5 in top 30 so far, so probably have team lead.

(Probably not enough for a win, but some nice finishes with the need for peak performances still a month or so away.)

Looks like the Women just get beat out by the Wolverines, but still a VERY solid performance and sign they can compete for a high podium finish the next (and more important) time they come to Louisville (for the NCAA Championships)-

(And of course, it's never that bad a day when Buffs beat Ducks.)

Congrats XC. Taking care of business.
Way to go, Erin.
