What an asshole. I wouldn't want to play on the same team as someone just to watch them launch 108 shots.

I new a kid in HS that started yelling for the ball the second he crossed the half court line. He would launch from anywhere. He was the black hole. As soon as the ball ended up in his hands it was shot at the hoop. He might have gone an entire season without a single assist.

It's like when Ernest gets those magical basketball shoes and becomes a star. He dominates other teams but then learns a valuable lesson about sharing with his team. Miss Ernest.

Grinnell has been notorious for having a ridiculous offense that puts up gaudy numbers for years and years. They've been getting press coverage on it for a couple decades.

The coach that allowed a player to score 138 points should tender his resignation right after the game, unbelievable, what happened to forcing the ball out of his hands or a hard foul or something

Well I wonder if his hand is sore after shooting 108 shots.

His team planned on doing this so they were feeding him the ball. He was told to go for it. Wasn't being a ballhog.

Total douche. The worst part is ESPN, Kobe and Lebron think this is a big deal. If the team won by 10 pts instead of 70 then maybe I would respect it a bit more. Total clown show.

I'm more amazed at the other kid on the other team 70 points. 30 boards? Went 30-43?

Grinnell's strategy is basically to forget playing defense...they leave a lot of wide-open looks for the other team...

There is nothing wrong with a DIII school. I don't like this style of basketball, but these kids aren't going anywhere with basketball beyond college.

I attended a DIII school for my undergrad degree and worked for one. My student assistant played basketball. She knew she wasn't good enough for even DII. No scholarships. She said she'd come out of college with a lot of loans and she is a star.

A parent of a player for my alma mater told me that they can and do receive academic scholarships, which is how I paid my way through college, along with student loans.

The only "Total douche" is YOU! (per usual, I might add). C'mon, a**hole, its D3 ball, the last bastion of the true student-athlete! No schollies and you play because you love the game. And since the coachs still get paid to win at that level, players have to deal with that.

The coach, the kid and his teammates planned this, as the best way for them to win. After about the 60th shot, that kid's arms had to be getting somewhat tired and yet, he still hit a very decent percentage of his shots.

Stop be-clowning yerself for about 2 minutes and appreciate the effort, as well as the outcome.

Thank you. This is what D3 athletics are all about--the love of the game. Poorly paid coaches who are expected to win.

Karma to you. You get what D3 athletics are.

D3 athletics is not big money. Many coaches on staffs are volunteers. Head Coaches are either there because they love the environment or are looking to move up in the profession. The athletes take it extremely seriously for love of the game, love of competing, and love of being part of a team. It's an important part of the campus culture at these mostly small, private colleges.

I didn't like that a coach would absolutely run up the score on a team in this way. It was poor sportsmanship in an effort to get publicity. Not something I can get behind. I don't blame the players, though. It's not their job to think about those kinds of things. For them, it was probably a fun idea to see if they could get a guy on the team a record and some national spotlight.

Would you feel differently if a D1 program did this? If so, why?

Yeah, because D1 is when the respect issue comes more into play, and your average fan doesn't take D3 quite as seriously. When a D1 team has this happen the whole weight of the program falls on their shoulders, with potential repercussions that potentially affect coaches' careers. This kind of a loss might even send a coach to the hot seat.

Like you said, many coaches are volunteers and have other jobs supporting themselves. In D3 the players are passionate just to play, while planning their personal future is probably more relevant to them than the average D1 guy who thinks of school as secondary. Also, In this case no one has really discussed the opposing team, and I'm sure they'll be able to brush it off without a problem.

    Thats why

Bet the opposing kids and coach didn't complain about "poor sportsmanship"! Rather, I'll wager they'll take a certain perverse pride in being the opponent in a record-breaking effort such as that. Heck, they scored over a 100 pts. themselves!

Had an offspring that played D3 soccer and one time, their team (a regular NCAA play-off contender) scored a 10-1 win over a all-Jewish school (5-1 is considered a real blow-out at any level of soccer). Both teams still had a great time, both benchs played extensively, with the starters on the superior team cheering on both sides' efforts. (You think the Ducks' starters cheered on the Buffs, in their two recent blow-outs?)

They just enjoyed competing against each other. There was no acrimony over "poor sportsmanship"; both sides just understood their respective strengths and weaknesses.

That's the beauty of D3! Deal with it!

I played D3 football, won a conference title and finished #3 in the nation. My experience was not an "everyone gets a trophy and plays for fun" type of thing.

How can you have fun getting killed in anything? Losing, in anything, ****ing blows, let alone getting blown out.

This was a strange game in more ways than the points scored by the player. It was an exhibition game for the losing team, but not for the winning team, Grinnell. School officials checked after the game to see if the record was valid because of that and were told the record was valid even though it was an exhibition game for one school.
