In Ringo's blog today on whether CU would consider firing Hawk if he had another sub-par season considering he'd be owed $2M...

"I think you always have to look at the economics and look at budget issues, but it's one piece of a total picture," DiStefano said. "So I believe coach Hawkins will have two more years on his contract, and I'm not looking to make a change, but I think this is a year for him as a coach - and he has great experience. He has great records wherever he's been - to really let him do wha the needs to do to win. I think people are expecting wins next year. I certainly am"

I don't know what I expected him to say on the topic, but I'm glad to hear finally that there are SOME expectations from the administration other than having a team of nice kids that go to class.

But remember that DoucheStefano's win expectation is ANYTHING more than last year. Danny-boy goes 4-8 and Douche is fighting for him...

I really don't believe that DiStefano had any choice last year. I am certain that the word came down from Benson that Hawkins was to stay, no ifs ands or buts. Benson knew that we were coming into one of the worst budget years in the state in recent memory, he knew that we had an election coming up this year, and even though the athletic dept. is self-funded and the buyout money was coming from boosters he did not want to be explaining to the CU haters in the media and in the legislature anything about paying a coach $3+ million to not coach after paying the prior coach $3+ million to go away. I can imagine the stupid line of reasoning used against CU "Well if you can come up that much money for football, you can come up with it for professors, we need that money other places." Benson didn't want to deal with this.

This year hopefully things will be looked at differently. By the end of the season the election will be finished. If the team keeps on losing they will have the losses in revenue to bring up to counter the arguements, at the same time the buyout will be around $2 million instead of over $3 million. Based on the assumption that Hawk is not going to magically remember how to win football games I think that chances are very slim that he is around after this year.

Of course I didn't think there was any logical way to keep him after last year and I don't think that Benson gives a crap about the football program anyways so who knows. In that case the only hope we have is that both Benson and DiStefano are both bumping up against retirement and within the next couple of years the people at the top will be changed anyways.

Translation: "Well, funding sucks right now, so coming up with buyout money isn't easy. But on the other hand, we can't keep losing donations. So I can definitely say that Coach Hawkins is under contract for two more years, and that I really dislike firing people. But it's time that he finally stops sucking. He didn't suck this much before he was hired here, so we're going to let him try some new **** and maybe lightning will strike. I mean, obviously people are sick of losing. Hell, I'm even sick of us losing at this point. I expect him to start winning next year, because all those people e-mailing me expect him to start winning next year, and I want them off my ass."

The part notably missing is what happens if he doesn't win next year. I know there is only so much that can be said about that at this point, but at this point it's also all that really matters...

Please get these clowns out of boulder. CU runs their athletic program like a tee-ball team while the rest of college football is major league. Quit ***** footing around and make a ****ing commitment to winning or get the hell out.

"He has great records wherever he's been"

    Wow

Does the guy know Hawkins has been at CU and even if he completes his contract has no chance for a "great record?"

It's one thing to be forced into something and quite another to make just plain stupid statements like that.

For 2 mill a year, we should also regulate all Janitorial duties to Hawk Sr and really make him earn it...

I think they are taking a chance and taking this offseason and upcoming season to see how much money they lose in donations and ticketsales and other revenue. If the homers keep showing up to the games to watch us lose then they may just keep Hawkins again. IMO there will need to be huge loss in donations, at least 10,000 empty seats at each home game along with a season similar to last year's for them to make a move. I am sure those things are/will happen, I just wonder at what point they will finally make the decision and if we will hit that magic number that I am sure they have calculated. After all, it is clear that the people making the decisions are not sports minded but strictly business/money driven.

Sadly, you hit the nail on the head. The adminitards will understand two things IMO: lack of $$$ and public humiliation. Both are bad for the team and CU. But apparently, the buffoons just don't care whether Cu is the Baylor of the B12N or not.

I see nothing wrong with what he said. For once, I think an administrator handled a question about Hawkins' future correctly. I know people are damn frustrated (I am too), but what do you expect the guy to say?

Given the fact that their basketball team is on the brink of a Final Four appearance, I wouldn't mind being the Baylor of the conference right about now.

No kidding. Isn't it amazing, really, that Baylor has accomplished this after their own scandal? Just goes to show that these things can be overcome. Although it is probably easier to do in BBall where you only need 4 or 5 top guys.

More like only 1 or 2 top players and a good surrounding cast, along with good coaching. But yea, it's definitely much easier for a basketball program to rise (or fall) in a very short period of time

I thought he meant the athletic program as a whole but if it was only in reference to football then I agree we're not quite that low. Yet.

The way I read it, it seems he is going to keep hawkins for another year no matter how many wins. I'd like to see someone find their testicles and say CU needs to have a winning season and a bowl game to continue with hawk as coach.

If you announce that your coach is on the hot seat and a lame duck, you pretty much kill recruiting. They should be saying it behind closed doors, but it doesn't need to be in the press.

:yeahthat: Although mostly because I really don't think he said a ****ing thing. It was mostly double talk. "I don't want to fire him, he has two years left on his contract, he was good elsewhere, we hope he'll get good here, but everybody including me expects a winner." Honestly at this point it's probably the best kind of answer to give on the situation...

Syko, I read it exactly like Junction read it. That quote was FAR from a ringing endorsement and really was just an attempt at putting a positive spin on a ****ty situation without going overboard like he has in the past. It was a much more measured response, which shows me they might be learning a thing or two in public relations for a change. I am pretty sure what is said behind closed doors is much different.
