In a highly questionable move prior to the season, Dan Hawkins named himself WR coach.

A big reason he did this instead of promoting Ambrose, is so there was room on the staff for Bob "Emperor Palpatine" Foster to be a full-time employee with no recruiting responsibility. Now, he's got his mentor Foster with postition responsibility that limits him to only coaching Beatty, Rippy and Ahles. Brilliant.

The first major development that came out of Dan Hawkins becoming the WR position coach is that Josh Smith decided to transfer.

The second major development has been a depth chart rotation (position groupings) that has resulted in Espinoza and Ebner getting more opportunities than Simmons or Wright.

Speaking of Simmons, he was considered by Kiesau to be the gem of this year's WR recruiting class and a guy that needed to contribute this year. He has gotten worse since Hawkins has been coaching him.

In general, our WRs have gotten worse this season. They drop passes, they don't gain separation, they run the wrong routes, they jog around completely clueless when the initial play breaks down, and the 1st year guys are still so confused and worried about making a mistake that they play slow.

Dan's decision to coach the WRs himself has been an unmitigated disaster. He's so bad as a WR position coach, it makes his head coaching look decent by comparison (and it's taken away from his ability to fully dedicate himself to the HC roll). Epic FAIL.

I have to agree. The WRs have not performed, and we haven't gotten the most out of the talent we have. The WR coach needs to go.

Hawk is a complete idot! When he gets his a$$ canned from Boulder I really dont think he gets another shot at a D1 coaching position...he has been THAT bad. No clue how to coach up players, no clue how to strategize, no clue how to make adjustments on the fly...

I think he needs to change his profession to be another one of those motivational speakers with no substance. Those guys just spew bull$hit and dont have to have any results to back them up....JUST LIKE TALKINS!!!

Subject has FAILED to show evidence of the slightest knowledge of the WR position.

Subject presents a CARELESS and DISTRACTED attitude before and during games.

    Subject's WR Students have REGRESSED.

To actually give him a grade is actually very generous. I would give him an

    IN - COM - PLETE!!!!! (waa-waa-waa-waaaaaagh!!)

    :smile2:

I can face it, Dan Hawkins as the face of a team that had been badly sullied in the media was a home run. Dan Hawkins as a coach in the big leagues has been an unmitigated disaster. Period. And his biggest mistake has probably been signing his son. Both would have been better off at different schools, IMO.

Maybe Washington State will hire him so he can tap into that recruiting hotbed across the border... IDAHO!

Need I remind you that Washington State's head coach, Paul Wulff, was hired after the 2007 season... on the heels of him ridiculously out-coaching Dan Hawkins when he brought his Eastern Washington team into Boulder? :sad1:

As they've gained enough experience to warrant "mid-season form" labels, your evaluation is correct - they look worse now than First Game.

The lack of understanding about "default lines of sight" for a QB on the run is horrible. Every receiver should learn "Here's the right route, and here's the location on the field to head for when the QB's forced to move."

Maybe Coach Hawkins' long, long success as WR Coach, he takes these for granted.

My mistake. I was thinking EWU was in the 2007 season. That was last year, wasn't it? Damn. Time flies when you're having fun.

One thing I noticed on the telecast was, at least on one occasion, the WR was practically jogging his route. It was as if he knew he wasn't the primary receiver, so why go hard?

    Don't dog Foster though...

He has taken on a bigger role with the defense since the first couple of games, and has a lot to do with the defensive turn-around.

Would you be willing to elaborate? Because I've been thinking the same things about Foster. I really like Buffnik's post, because it brings up two things that have really knawed at me - Foster and Kiesau/Hawkins.

Foster is only coaching certain LBs. I thought our LB coach was pretty top-notch already, and I'm not sure what the point of taking kids away from Cabral is. Also, does he do any recruiting?? I don't keep track of everyone at Allbuffs, but I want to say you're a good poster - I'd really be interested in what you have to say about Foster in more detail.

Also, I think Hawk's bigger mistake was promoting Kiesau to OC. I thought Kiesau was definitely on his way to becoming a coordinator, but this season has shown it is too soon. He was a great position coach though - the work he did with Cal's WRs was great. I would have loved to see him coach Simas, Simmons, Clemons, etc. Now though, I think he's a little over his head, and not only does it hurt the team, it may hurt his resume. He's a really good coach though in my limited knowledge. If I were in charge, I'd get rid of the enitre coaching staff, but I would keep around a handful - one of them being Kiesau. Hawk coaching any position is a joke...maybe he'd coach fullbacks well or something...

Good post, really shows how badly Hawk has messed up. I do like how the one coach Hawk decides needs less responsibility is Cabral so he calls up his grandpas fathers friend to coach 3 guys..

Foster assumed OLB duties previously attended to by Collins. One year deal with no recruiting responsibilities.

Just going by position I think it's hard to argue that WR isn't easily one of our weakest positions this year. That alone should tell Hawk he has failed and to A) fire himself and hire a real WR coach or B) realize that he is just not a very good football coach and to fire himself as a whole.
