Didn't get much going during the VCU-Butler game today. I was at the football scrimmage, but heard from my dad that the game was slightly more entertaining than C-Span2.

Butler won a return trip to the championship game, though. Very cool.

This UConn-Kentucky game is ok, but we've also seen some bad offense tonight. I'm pulling for the Huskies just because I had to pick someone.

should have been a kicked ball with .16 left and remain UCONN ball.

Didn't end up mattering, but the refs need to get it right in that situation.

    Congrats to UConn.

    Final is Monday night?

yup, monday. do they still play a senior "all-star" game on Sunday....teams made of players who weren't in the tournament? Cory Higgins for sure and even maybe Levi should have got some consideration. i didn't see anything about Levi making the 3 point shooting thing...so, i'm guessing he's not in it. been busy this week so maybe missed it if posted or in the papers.

I would love to see Butler win. UConn has a lot of athletes though.

Way to stay classy VCU. I think Gene Smith should foot the bill for the damage.

That wasn't a kick, the only way its a kick is if its kicked intentionally, not bounced off the guys foot when he happens to be moving it. They did get that call right. But, as Nik said, it didn't end up mattering.

Anyone see that practice highlight during the first game of VCU with Shaka Smart taking that charge and diving for a loose ball? That guy is intense, that was great.

Does Butler realize they are allowed to take shots that arent 3 pointers? It would be one thing if they were making them but this is getting ridiculous. 13 min left in the game and they have only 26 points and have made one 2 point fg.

That may have been the worst NCAA final ever played.

Something needs to be done for next season to get the scoring up.

Maybe it's time to change the shot clock from 35 seconds to 30.

I'm almost 30, but One Shining Moment still makes me feel like a little boy dreaming of playing in college...and I have to miss it this year, because ****ing Canada is playing curling after the game...

Anyway, yes, this was one of the worst games played. I was rooting for Butler, but oh well...if UConn was going to win another one, at least it was the worst championship game I've ever seen...

That game set college basketball back 70 years.

The good news is that the Buffs made the Final 4 69 years ago....

They need to stop playing the Final Four in cavernous football stadiums.

Like what, make the players shoot better? It was an ugly, ugly game, no 2 ways about it, but there's nothing to say these games are supposed to be pretty. Sometimes the games are ugly and 1 or both teams play bad, whether it's the regular season, a tournament, or even a championship game as in this case.

i missed the game. was at a buddy's to watch online (no TV), and restarted his computer for some reason about half-hour before tip and after couldn't get a connection. he's in a wheelchair, so we spent those two hours going to Best Buy, buying a new router (turns out we didn't need) and fixing his computer whilst talking on speakerphone with Andy from Quest. i spent a lot of time behind his desk plugging and unplugging cables with filters. Basically, it sucked. I couldn't leave, he's in a wheelchair and can't do a lot of that stuff. i suggested we go down the street to the deli with a TV grab a pastrami sammie and forget about it for a bit, but he was wigging on his computer so, what do you do?

Sounds like maybe i had a better time. Free orange chicken and egg rolls. lo mein, too....at least.

1000% against changing the game for "more scoring", especially the shot clock. while i am a life-long Nuggets fan, one of the many reasons i can't hardly watch the NBA but maybe once a week is the 24 second shot clock. playing "good defense" means D'ing up for 15 seconds until someone misses a shot. might as well make dunks worth 4 points in that mindset.

To me it was the story of two halves. The first half was just incredible defense on both ends of the floor, a true clinic on how to play great defense. I really enjoyed the first half.

The 2nd half, UConn used their superior athletic ability, continued to play fantastic defense, and finally went to Lamb where they had a true advantage. Butler couldn't hit the broad side of the barn. UConn got in their head, and they missed more open looks then I think I've ever seen above the 8th grade level. I really hate Calhoun, but you got to hand it to him, the guy can recruit (within the rules? questionable) and coach.

30 second shot clock. Tighten up officiating on hand check, etc. There are ways to speed up play and give offensive advantage. Don't pretend that it was just the title game. It's epidemic.

we averaged 80 points a game.

if you want to make the game better, make the court wider, enlarge the lane and raise the rim. guys are so big and muscular these days it's not even the same game of 20 years ago.

Wider court would make a ton of sense.

And while we averaged over 80, it was way too easy for a less skilled Bama team to force a clunky, rhythmless game in the low 60s that ended our season.

There are two things that are killing college basketball, even if they make the tournament more 'unpredictable' which to a lot of people means more 'fun' and to TV means more sensationalizing. First, obviously, is the 1-and-done rule which has led to teams made up of almost exclusively immensely talented young players who never stay long enough to gel with their teammates or improve their game appreciably, or teams made up of almost exclusively inferior talent who stay together long enough to become a good 'team'. Neither is a formula for the kind of teams that used to be a perennial constant in the NCAAs. The second might be a little more heretical, but I think the 3-point shot is ruining the game as well, especially in the post-season tournaments. Too many teams rely on it much too heavily. This heavy reliance on the three has made it to where teams are much more susceptible to 'cold' nights, where they can't get their offense going and they have no other way of scoring, because they have little to no inside game. The 3-pointer makes college ball more exciting, true, but it has made the game worse.

Obviously there is no way that the 3-pointer is going anywhere, so the next suggestion I would have is the reducing the shot clock further and perhaps moving the backcourt count from 10 down to 8 seconds, to help stimulate the "walk-it-upcourt" teams into a more up-tempo offense.

I have no problem with teams showing patience and ball reversal on offense, but the walking the ball upcourt offense is just as yawn-inducing as anything else that's wrong with college ball.

I wasn't inferring that it was just the title game, in fact I even stated that. A shorter shot clock isn't going to eliminate sloppy play and cold shooting. The game is fine as it is, anything less than 35 seconds and it starts to force teams too much. Just because teams are playing half-court basketball instead of run 'n gun style doesn't mean it's bad basketball.

    Re: Alfred
I agree that the 3-point shot has given teams better chances of pulling an upset, but it can also be a team's downfall if they try to rely on it too much. I'd prefer to see it done away with but as stated that's certainly not going to happen. At least they backed up the line a few years ago.

It was a 45 second clock back when I was in college. 35 made things better and I heard the same objections at the time. Just saying.
