I thought he was the better QB out there today, no question.

Cool to see Jon Major starting. I noticed that Anthony Wright was listed on the chart. Anyone know what's going on with him?

    Knee injury.

On the bright side, Guido Murnig has arrived! Preseason All-American based on name alone.

Very pleased with depth on the offensive side of the ball. Scared sh*tless looking at defensive depth.

I think the #1s on defense are much better overall unit than an offense, but agree that the depth is better on offense.

I don't like Adkins at #1 LG based on the Spring Game Richter outplayed him easily.

The note at the top indicates this isn't a final listing. It may or may not be changed after evaluations.

I also thought the comment/explanation for the fullbacks was interesting. 2 linebackers listed as a "when utilized" scenario.

Sorry, but unless you have access to coaches film which zero's in on the LG spot and you run it over and over with the play/assignment as a "known", it is absolutely, 100% impossible to have any idea which LG outplayed whom. Offensive line coaches worldwide laugh at fansites for this kind of stuff.

Is it also possible that some coaches are so blinded by film, the assignments and the little things that they sometimes miss that which is apparent to the more casual observer?

It wasn't long ago that I felt as you do. But at some point it seemed that those best suited to evaluate come from a less esoteric perspective. I'm sure there are coaches laughing at me.

The same could be said for every position, so whats the point?

I didn't realize that posting opinions based on what I saw in the Spring Game needed to be qualified first.

What I saw, when the camera allowed me to see the LG spot, was that Richter picked up blitzes exceptionally well. In the running game he opened holes like he was playing against children. He is strong and knows how to use it. When the other LG's were in the game I saw them getting pushed back in pass blocking and pressure coming through while they did not do good at picking up LB blitzes either.

Of course, there could be lots of stuff I missed, which is why I stated "based on what I saw in the Spring Game". I hope to spend more time watching it on the replay but come on buffaholic, everyone knows that we are just fans in the stands or on the couch offering up opinions. I am not an Offensive Line Coach and you know that. let them laugh away, to me this is part of being a fan. If you saw something different on the field I would listen to you and learn and become a better fan, whats wrong with that?

I am praying Richter wins that spot. That is why we recruited him after all.

It is true that without knowing what the specific assignment is and having the opportunity to break down specifically what the opposition was doing you can't say if a lineman (offensive or defensive) was doing his specific job. It is also true that a lot of the nuances are hard to pick up unless you have access to the game films and can go back and evaluate in detail.

At the same time coaches can get so wrapped up in having their guys do it their way that they miss the big picture. The coach may look at a play and say everyone was where they were supposed to be and engaged the guy they were supposed to engage using the technique we wanted. The fan looks at a play and says we got 2-3 yards with player X in there and when player Y is in there guys are on the ground and the back gets 6 yards.

The contrast, fans get so wrapped up in results that they miss (or don't even know) the details, coaches can get so wrapped up in details that they lose the big picture, results. Effective coaches balance these two, based on the record over the past four years it would be fair to say that these have not been effective coaches and I have clearly seen guys who get results on the sideline watching guys play who may be good at the details but don't get results.

Ironic because fansites laugh when offensive line coaches like Denver Johnson have a unit that plays like it did last season or a coaching staff that has performed as ours has for the last 4 years.

I would suppose that Kiesau and Hawkins are laughing it up right now since they have access to the QB film and ALL the fans are idots. Let them laugh their way to the unemployment line.

    You're right.

But I think it is fair to say this: I have observed that our team performs better when Behrens or Iltis is playing LG than when Adkins is playing the position. The coaches are obviously seeing something I'm not, but I would hope they would step back and give some thought to what has worked in actual games.

I would say benching 500 pounds is well past 'scary strong'. But I do get your point and I thought he looked very good yesterday

I would also add that Solder's such a technique guy that I believe it would do him good to have a mauler like Richter (or Max) next to him. Nate needs a partner on the left side who will bring attitude.

One thing is for certain... WR is a strength this year. Hopefully, this serves to minimize some of our QB liabilities. Too bad that Simmons hasn't quite panned out.

I'm also excited for the LB corps. Hope Major breaks out this year. Suprised that Rippy isn't slotted higher.

Also, it is interesting to note that all 4 of our tailbacks are shorter than 5'10''.

    Urbana,

We did have a Simmons sighting at the Spring Game. After dropping a couple early, he seemed to get into a groove later on. And that 83 yard touchdown was the highlight of the day. Who knows if he'll break out this season, but that had to give him a ton of confidence heading into summer workouts. I think he's going to surprise some people.

Why would they release the final depth chart before the spring game? Sure seems like they should release it in a week or so....

According to the webbot, the competition for the QB slot stretches into the summer.....

Because it was the final "Spring" depth chart. Anything released after that would be the "Summer" or "Fall" depth chart. Competition opens up again when the new guys arrive.
