Game thread - New Mexico @ Colorado (Saturday 11/13, 4:30 PM MT, Pac 12 Mountain)

No thread for the New Mexico game. It looks like they were terrible last year and fired their coach. Hired Richard Petino from Minnesota. Looks like a complete overhaul of the roster. This could be a tough challenge for the young team since there won’t be a lot of film. Hopefully tad can get them prepared and they can adapt the game plan as things evolve on the court. Good article here

Who are these guys?

It’s a good thing first-year Lobos coach Richard Pitino decided to put the names back on the UNM jerseys this season.

To say there’s some new faces on the roster is a bit of an understatement.

Wednesday’s starting lineup of Jaelen House, Jamal Mashburn Jr., Taryn Todd, Jay Allen-Tovar and Birima Seck marked the first time in UNM men’s basketball history that the opening night starting lineup didn’t contain a single returning player.

In fact, even the guys who are back from last season’s 6-win campaign that was played entirely outside the state of New Mexico, weren’t exactly a big part of Wednesday’s game.

Apparently Petino was fired from Minnesota last year.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota fired Richard Pitino on Monday after the men's basketball coach compiled a 54-96 regular-season record over eight years in the Big Ten and had only three conference finishes higher than 10th place.

The Golden Gophers went 14-15 this season, dropping 11 of their last 14 games. They were 0-10 on the road, one of only three major conference teams in the country without a road win.

12 transfers, started 5 guys new to the program, who score 99.
This feels like Tad's well-designed plays against a very athletic pick-up team.

Preview article from yesterday, which includes a little more on the Lobos - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/11/12/mens-basketball-colorado-hosts-new-mexico-saturday.aspx

"
OPENING TIP: Saturday will mark the 500th game for Tad Boyle as a collegiate head coach. He is 290-209 in his 16th season leading an NCAA Division I program.
...

ABOUT THE LOBOS: New Mexico is 1-0, opening its season with a 99-92 win over FAU, in The Pit, on Nov. 10. It was Lobos' first home game since Feb. 29, 2020 (621 days) as they didn't play inside the state of New Mexico's borders in 2020-21 (11 road, 11 neutral). New Mexico shot 53 percent overall and scored 56 second half points to outlast FAU.

Guard Jaelen House, a transfer from Arizona State, scored 30 points and dished out six assists in his New Mexico debut. Forward Jay Allen-Tovar had 18 points and led the Lobos with eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Forward Gethro Muscadin had 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting off the bench.

New Mexico, which finished 6-16 in 2020-21, shared the eighth spot with Wyoming in the 2021-22 Mountain West Conference Preseason Poll.

THE SERIES: This will be the 16th meeting in the series with Colorado holding an 8-7 edge. The Buffaloes have won the last two, a home-and-home series played in 2017 and '18. Colorado claimed a 75-57 win at the CU Events Center on Dec. 6, 2017. In the return trip to The Pit a year later, the Buffaloes overcame a 17-point deficit to sneak out of Albuquerque with a 78-75 victory on Dec. 11, 2018.

Colorado's Evan Battey is the only player on either roster to compete in that contest. Battey, a redshirt freshman at the time, just missed a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Current Colorado seniors Elijah Parquet and Benan Ersek were on the Buffaloes' roster for that game, but did not play.

Tad Boyle is 2-1 as a head coach against New Mexico. This will be Richard Pitino's first game against Colorado as a head coach.

The QR code link on the seats not having visiting rosters is hot garbage.

I don’t know the name of the ref who looks like the dude from Modern Family, but he is always terrible.

I can’t get the gsme on stresm i europe, but how is it imaginary possible that Simpson has 8 rebbies and Lovering 1…don’t have mins played live but shots taken and makes no sense

With no Ruffin or Hammond in the first two games wondering if they are heading for a redshirt! Was secretly hoping we’d do that from a class disparity point of view and that a 11 man rotation would never happen.

Man our bigs got to the cup a lot tonight. Kee is our best pg but I wonder how tempted tad will be to put him off ball. He really spots up well.

DaSilva is really useful and I think he’ll be pretty consistent for us but I hope Clifford is consistent enough to move into the 3. Tad had him on the floor t the end of the game. Hopefully he can build on that.

Kid from Cheyenne Mountain didn’t look too bad for the lobos.

If I had to guess, Ruffin will redshirt. He’s still slightly hobbled and could use the year to get right.

Kind of surprised we haven’t seen Hammond.

KJ is gonna be a lot of peoples favorite player (non Evan division) by January. I’m also very glad that there is an occasional exception to the “No Colorado HS recruits” as Clifford is gonna be a stud. Not great numbers tonight but really impressed by him.

And @Falconetti - Lovering was doing a great job putting bodies on Lobos to keep them off the boards. So his numbers may be low but he looked good down there (IMO).
