Buff LACROSSE (7-3 overall; 2-1 in the Pac 12) heads down the road for an important non-conference game with the #12/13 ranked DU Pioneers (7-3' 2-0 in the Big East) this Wednesday night. Then, it's back to conference play*** as the team heads to Northern California in a face off with the UC- Davis Aggies (8-4, 1-2) Saturday afternoon.
(***Identical to what I wrote about last week's opponent, SDSU, this will be the only time CU will be facing UC- Davis as fellow Pac 12 members. (The Aggies and Aztecs were named associate Pac 12 members for lacrosse starting this season.) However, the annual matchups will continue as, after also being conference-mates for a few years in the MPSF, it's been announced that Davis will be joining the Buffs in the Big 12 for lacrosse.)

Note - In the latest NCAA release for the RPI ratings (as of 3/31, https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/lacrosse-women/d1/ncaa-womens-lacrosse-rpi), CU is at #31, while DU is #13 and Davis #50.
(As I mentioned in my last game thread, the lacrosse NCAA tournament is much smaller most other team sports, and there are only 14 at-large teams selected. Therefore, I'm GUESSING that if the Buffs want to get in the conversation to be one of those 13, they will need to upset DU and/ or USC (who currently is at #16 in RPI), as well as take care of business in their 4 other remaining regular season matches. (Of course, the Pac 12 tourney will always give them a chance at earning the conference auto-bid.))

The DU game is showing on their schedule as being on Altitude TV, and then on streaming for those who, I assume (???) have a premium subscription for DU athletics. The UC - Davis game is showing as being available on their Youtube channel, (Link(s) and more info for video coverage is available further down this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Buffs Prepped for Two Road Games This Week

By: Tanner Kay, Athletic Communication Associate

BOULDER — The No. 20 Colorado Buffaloes are set for two away games this weekend, as they will take on Denver in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MST, followed up with a game against UC Davis on Saturday at 2 p.m MST.

Buffs are coming off an impressive 17-8 home win over SDSU this past weekend, moving to 7-3 (2-1 Pac-12). The Pioneers are also 7-3 and have won their last four games. UC Davis is 8-4 on the year, and are a perfect 7-0 when playing at home.

After earning a quick double-digit lead over the Aztecs, the Buffs were able to get some playing time for Avery Matthews and Teagan Ryan, who both recorded their first career collegiate goals.

Freshman Averi Gardner posted four goals in the conference win on Saturday, a career and team-high. After scoring her first ever goal the previous week against Cal, Gardner answers back with a career game, leading her team in goals.

Madeline Pisani continued her scorching hot campaign, contributing four goals to the Buffs' win. She now has 36 goals on the season and sits atop the Pac-12 Conference leaderboard.

The Pioneers are led by Julia Gilbert, who has scored 29 goals on the season. Denver boasts another player with 30 or more points, Olivia Penoyer, who only has 16 goals but leads her team by a wide-margin in assists with 20.

UC Davis impressively has three players with 20 or more scores this season and because of that they lead the conference with 158 goals.

INSIDE THE SERIES
The Buffaloes hold a 4-6 record all-time against Denver, with their last win coming in 2022. CU dropped last year's contest at home to DU, by a score of 9-8.

CU is a perfect 6-0 in the series with UC Davis. They last played during the 2022 season in Boulder, where the Buffs took 17-13 victory.

kick the crap out of all teams who wear red. This would be a big win for the buffs and help in their path to the NCAA tourney

Technically, DU wears Crimson. Semantics? Possibly. But while I could never wear red, I have no problem with crimson.

DU is going to win this one, as they are up 7-14 with less than 4 minutes to go. (After the opening 4 goal quarter, the Buffs only managed 1 combined in the 2nd and 3rd.)

DAVIS, Calif. — A career-high six goals each from Ashley Stokes and Madeline Pisani lifted the No. 20 Colorado Buffaloes over conference opponent UC Davis by a score of 17-7 Saturday afternoon.

Colorado bounces back into the win column after falling to Denver earlier in the week, and with this win they move to 8-4 (3-1 Pac-12) while UC Davis is now 8-5 (1-3 Pac-12).

It was the Buffaloes six consecutive goals in the first half and a 12-2 scoring run between the second and third quarters that proved to be the difference maker in this one.

"Good to get this win," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "We have been focused on this game since Wednesday night after Denver. We know importance of conference games for us. Proud of the team for way we fought today. A slow start on D but then tightened it up and really limited them and helped us regain control."

The Southern California native — Stokes — was a one man wrecking crew in this contest, recording a career-high six scores, all coming in the first half. Her previous career-high was four goals, which she achieved on multiple occasions. She is the second CU player this season with six or more goals in a game, Eve Hritzuk last did it in the season opener against Louisville.

Pisani also earned her career-high six goals on Saturday, and scored four of her six goals in the second half. Her season total is now up to 43, which leads the conference by a wide margin.

She and Stokes combined for 12 goals in the win, the most by a pair of CU teammates since Pisani and Hritzuk had 11 the first game of the season. Stokes and Pisani are also the only pair of teammates to score in every game thus far this season.

"Madeline and Ashley stepped up for us," Whidden stated. "Always takes the whole team to make opportunities happen but those two were focused on the mission, they are leaders for us on and off the field, and were a key for us on offensive end."

Sophomore Rachel Kennedy notched a goal in the win over the Aggies, and has now scored in four consecutive games. She has 12 goals on the year.

First-year player — Aidan Carr — logged 15 draw controls in the win, the third-most ever by a CU player in a single game. Only Darby Kiernan (19) and Zoe McElhaney (18) had more. Carr leads the team with 46 draw controls.

"Aidan was great on draw," coach Whidden said post game. "We needed that today to help us because they made us work on the defensive end. Proud of her and her efforts, outside of the 5 the officials called against us, I think we only lost 3."

UP NEXT
The Buffs will be at home for two games next weekend, when they take on Arizona State and Kent State. The game against ASU will be on Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m. MST. Sunday's game against Kent State will be at 12:00 p.m. MST.
