Too soon ?
Lincoln Riley's brother
After what TCU did to OU today he deserves a spot here.
Garrett is starting to look like a star in the profession. That offense is damn good, and he's the playcaller. He's been in DFW for the last few years, so he's got connections there.Lincoln Riley only had 2 years of P5 OCing before getting the Oklahoma job
Probably yes. Trusting a 33 year old to rebuild CU is a dicey proposition. Also how much credit does he get for an offense when Sonny Dykes is the HC?Why hasn't this name come up more?
Too young? No previous HC experience?
I think it is. A mediocre HC with a really good offensive system can win gamesNot saying he won’t be a good HC, but coordinating a good offense (or defense) at bigger programs is not even in the top 5 of things I care about when hiring a HC, especially when the HC’s specialty is on the same side of the ball.
I'm in the camp of thinking we need an experienced HC who can give us a blueprint for a new program operating model.I think it is. A mediocre HC with a really good offensive system can win games
I think that can win occasionally, but it’s not sustainable if the guy isn’t a good HCI think it is. A mediocre HC with a really good offensive system can win games
If you went with some unconventional offensive system like go-go with Marion, I suppose that could be an example, but you aren’t going to bring in a guy who has had success with air raid or spread offenses and think that system alone is getting this program back to relevancyI'm in the camp of thinking we need an experienced HC who can give us a blueprint for a new program operating model.
But, fwiw, hiring for a dynamic offense is one strategy CU has not tried so there's some merit in going that direction. It has worked elsewhere.
Doesn't the same line of thinking apply to Kasey Dunn? Not saying he won’t be a good HC, but coordinating a good offense (or defense) at bigger programs is not even in the top 5 of things I care about when hiring a HC, especially when the HC’s specialty is on the same side of the ball.
Same line of thinking applies to all coordinators, which is why there is so much more to it than just looking at Tennessee’s offense this season and falling in love with Golesh as a HC or Dunn.Doesn't the same line of thinking apply to Kasey Dunn?
Fair. I like Grimes.Same line of thinking applies to all coordinators, which is why there is so much more to it than just looking at Tennessee’s offense this season and falling in love with Golesh as a HC or Dunn.
Where I put more weight into the offensive success is a guy like Grimes who has proven it over years and years and is currently doing it under a defensive HC. The offense is entirely his.
Riley would be interested in a HC job or in CU specifically?I have a good friend who is very close to tot eh TCU program - Riley would be interested.
CU, but thats contigent on who else comes calling.Riley would be interested in a HC job or in CU specifically?
If they determine he has "it" when it comes to HC qualities, then sure, but it's a light resume no matter how you slice it and it's not even obvious that the offensive success at SMU and TCU is anything other than Sonny Dykes doing what Sonny Dykes has done everywhere he's been.Garrett Riley isn’t in my “F*** yeah Top 5” tier, but he is definitely in my “F*** it lets ride *cracks beer*” tier
Hiring Garrett would show that our admin has balls and is willing to reach beyond hiring old boring guys and understands that we want youth and an offense
His resume is thin, but I’m fine with the gamble on candidates like Riley, Dillingham, Golesh, etc
Sure, lots of question marks, definitely not in my top group. I am just dreading the thought of another DOA NFL assistant, so this looks pretty exciting in comparison. If they determine he has "it" when it comes to HC qualities, then sure, but it's a light resume no matter how you slice it and it's not even obvious that the offensive success at SMU and TCU is anything other than Sonny Dykes doing what Sonny Dykes has done everywhere he's been.
No matter who the hire is, the fan base will almost universally agree it's better than Dorrell, but if that wasn't the standard right now, would Garrett Riley be an attractive name?Sure, lots of question marks, definitely not in my top group. It took all of 5 seconds after googling Karl, then supported by his press conference, for me to go full doomer
Lincoln also had 6 years at TTU in various capacities, 4 years as OC at ECU and then 2 years as OC at OU before taking over a job he was basically groomed for, knew the leadership of the school, expectations, had an entire staff in place, etc.On the one hand, hiring a 33 year old to his first coaching gig after only a couple years as a P5 OC seems very risky, on the other hand that’s basically the same path Lincoln took having taken over the Sooners at the same age. Big difference (as Yak points out) is that Garrett is working under an offensive mixed HC in Dykes while Lincoln was running the Sooner offense for Stoops.
I think this is the wrong time for CU to take such a big risk on this guy even if he ends up killing it somewhere else. I think this hire needs to be safer.
Sure, but Dykes' offenses were always good. He could never figure out defense at CalI don't see why he wouldn't hold out for a better gig. He's coordinating one of the best offenses in the county on a team ranked #7. And it's not like he's riding the coattails of an elite QB. Duggan wasn't even the starter to begin the season. Let's not give Dykes too much credit. Sure he's a good coach, but he went 10-26 at Cal in conference, and this is by far his best team.
