HAWAII FANS NOT HAPPY WITH ESPN

We've heard from a few Hawaii fans who aren't happy with the way ESPN presented quarterback Colt Brennan during last night's Heisman Trophy presentation.

Specifically, Chris Fowler's retrospective of Brennan's college career drew complaints. Fowler noted that Brennan began his career at Colorado but was kicked off the team and spent seven days in jail after he was convicted of burglary and trespassing. Brennan later enrolled in junior college and then transferred to Hawaii, where he has excelled on the field and stayed out of trouble off the field.

Some Hawaii fans said they thought it was inappropriate that Fowler would bring up negative parts of Brennan's past on a night when he should be celebrated. One fan we heard from thinks Fowler was attempting to suggest that Colorado (which is Fowler's alma mater) has higher standards of conduct for its football players than Hawaii.

But we side with Fowler on this one. His job Saturday night was to provide ESPN's viewers with a complete look at the four Heisman finalists, and a complete look at Brennan's career needs to mention that he started his career at Colorado and explain how he ended up at Hawaii. If the Downtown Athletic Club wants its Heisman Trophy presentation to provide nothing but positive news, it should make it a private ceremony emceed by someone who gets a check from the Downtown Athletic Club.

As long as the Heisman presentation is emceed by someone who gets a check from ESPN, ESPN's viewers deserve to hear the whole story, even if the whole story includes some negative news.

I think what Brennan has done at Hawaii is fantastic. I wish he hadn't screwed up when he was here. Fowler isn't exactly known for being a CU homer, and I very seriously doubt that he was doing anything other than reporting the facts.

I would venture a guess that the vast majority of people watching the show had no idea how Brennan ended up at Hawaii, which doesn't typically recruit much from the mainland. His is a good story - screw up at one place, be given a second chance somewhere else and make the most of it. That's great stuff.

And it should also be noted that Colorado DOES have higher standards for it's players than does Hawaii, but that's not what Fowler was implying.

I was a little uncomfortable when Fowler went on about that stuff, for Brennan and for CU both. I assumed Brennan knew they would bring that old stuff up before the show started........maybe not.....if I was to receive an award (not likely) i would not want any skeletons brought out on national television - I have a "little" sister who is always happy to do that at family get togethers but at least its not national television

I didn't watch, but I think ESPN should have made a big point of how he turned his life and career around after the unfortunate event. They could have easily stated the history and turned it positive since it was an award show. Did they make any attempt?

I think it was unneccesary, I agree with those that think you should be celebrated at that moment and not have your past drudged up on national TV. I don't think Fowler was doing it as a slight but just doing his job, I just disagree with the timing.

They can be mad at ESPN if they want, but not Fowler, because I doubt Fowler had much input on the script. I can guarantee he didn't add it in because he went to CU.

Fowler is a professional, and I'd rather have him than anyone else at espin.

    :yeahthat:

I totally agree. He never shills for CU and he is respected as an authority on college football. He doesn't hide the fact that he's a CU alum. I think that it speaks highly for the school that the guy who is considered the top college football guy in America is an alumnus.

Oh,there is no doubt he's a proffesional, but it would be nice as a fellow alum to see him give cu some love every once in say 10 years.

I don't think he's being objective because he doesn't care. I've been hearing a radio ad he did for the "school colors" paint thing where he talks about going to CU, how CU has had a few rough years lately, but he is still a proud Buff. I just think he sees his role as being different from the analyst guys who are encouraged to cut up in all kinds of different ways.

It would be nice to have him talk up the Buffs once in a while, I agree. But I think saying he "sucks" is a bit harsh...

Agree, I'd rather have Fowler represent himself the way he does rather than be a shrill, shameless homer. I can honestly say my loathing of Herbstreet makes me root against OSU, even though my uncle was a professor there many years ago.

I didn't see the coverage, but I can certainly see how that would be upsetting to Brennan and Hawaii fans. I'm sure he was recording it and planned to show it to his kids one day, but it will be hard to explain that little blurb about spending a week in the pokie for tresspassing/burglary.

On the positive side, at least it wasn't reported as some sort of unlawful sexual misconduct, which I think was the initial accusation.

This is my take on him also. I'd much rather have Fowler as an alum on the air instead of someone who shamelessly and subjectively picks their school to win every week, ala Holtz.

Whether you like Colt or not, Fowler should not have brought that up. It's supposed to be a celebration of the kids football achievements.

...BTW. I can't stand Colt or the Rainbows. F'em all.

I googled Colt's name and found a blog supposedly written by a friend of his. He said Colt was drunk and went to a girl's room. They were about to get it on when her roommate walked in on them. Not wanting to appear "loose" the girl yelled rape and of course was believed considering the atmosphere in Boulder at the time. The rape claim didn't "stick" thank God, but he was jailed for the other charges. That makes more sense than anything else I've heard about his "misadventure". KKK-Keenan-Lacy was probably elated to find a white guy to charge so she didn't appear racially prejudiced.
