First of all, anyone that things the personal foul on Orms was a bad call clearly does not understand that leading with the helmet and touching the helmet during a tackle is a penalty, hands down. The rules have changed and it should be a penalty. Look at some players in their 40's and see the brain damage that these people have due to head shots.

At some point over the last 15 years, football has become less about tackling and more about big blow up hits.

Meanwhile, the refs seem to allow the hits that are lower on the body when the tackling player led with the helmet. The hit on Jordan Webb was right in the groin area and the CSU player led with the helmet. How is this not spearing?

This type of hitting has to change. This is NOT tackling. This will eventually ruin people's lives if coaches and refs allow this type of hitting.

There is a difference between hitting and tackling and all levels of football need to recognize this.

Once I saw the replay I definitely agreed Orms' hit was a penalty.

I agree the helmet shouldnt be used like that. Im pretty much positive somebody will get paralyzed because they have to drop their head to get across the bow. All it takes is a knee or shoulder at full speed. Damn, we got to regulate everything these days?

Here's what pisses me off about those plays (that one in particular) - when the defender launches, he knows he not supposed to lead with his helmet and 9 times out of 10 isn't. However, once the he is committed to the hit, he can't change his body position. If you look at that play again, you'll see that once the receiver caught the ball, he made a slight turn and bent over slightly to brace for the hit...which resulted in Orms helmet being slight right of where he was aiming and the receiver's head being lower and thus Orms helmet riding up the shoulder pads and hitting the dude in the chin. In f***ing football. The defender's job is to hit the receiver hard enough to jar the ball loose. I'll bet if you penalized the receiver for bracing for the hit, the instances of "leading with the helmet" and "helmet to helmet" would go down...because most of the time, that's not where the defender is aiming.

Im not disagreeing with u Philly but you can get hurt the same way tackling by your definition. Only way to change it is teach them young. I always got taught lead with my screws, right in the chest. Yeah youll probably get some head contact but I think its good technique. Your head is up, your back is straight, see what u hit.

I guess it's more of the top of the helmet and the lunging forward that I am more concerned with. The front of the helmet, where the screws are, is less of problem because you can't lunge forward like you can with leading with the top of the helmet.

The hit on Jordan Webb was the top part, not the screws.... The CSU player shot at him like a missile....

I guess I am not explaining it well.

But you are correct, can't stop it all, but Tackling with the screws is the way it should be, without ducking and lunging at the player.

I basically played the 2 positions that you aren't taught to tackle...... QB & Kicker (so call me a ***** and get it over with)..... But then played soccer later because I was better at it.

***** that said its such a sketch rule... the hit last year orms delivers on the utah play was an awful call and yes i know it was a defenseless receiver call but they are both awful judgement calls, And if a player slips slightly or ducks into the hit... they can alter the approach of an incoming hit...its a stupid ****ing rule

See post #4. Completely agree. A blatant shot, yes, penalize...but both of Orms hits, ridiculous.

I heard Pop Warner even outlawed the tackling im saying. Ive never seen anybody get hurt doing it, personally. Besides my knee, I only got hurt in football once. We were playing Denison at Jones Stadium in Lubbock. They had a big back, 220 or so, he ended up going to Texas, Chris Roberson or Robertson, something. Anyway he got to second level and I had to come up, hes a big boy so I went low. When I did, his knee clocked me in the head when I tried to get it across. Laid face down at Jones Stadium and they said I twitched a few times, it just knocked me out, not sure about the twitching. Its just as dangerous dropping your head to get across.
