Reasons to be optimistic for next season.

We bring back our offense. Seriously. And while the O started pretty slowly this season, we started accumulating decent yardage in our final games of the season. If we can only score in the red zone, this can be a potent unit (as is mine, when I don't shower).

O-line: Underperformed this year, yes. However, add a year of experience and bring everybody back. At some point these guys will get it (?).

Receivers: Our weakness becomes a strength next season. McKnight, Simas, Will Jeff, Simmons and add Clemons, Darden and Ussery. There's reason to be excited.

QB: I like Hansen, and he's proven he can distribute the ball. We've got a great backup in Cody (assuming that Hansen's our starter next season).

Backfield: We lose Behrens, but return Stewart, Lockridge and Sumler.

Tight Ends: Geer and Devanny gone, but Deehan has shown flashes of brilliance. We'll need some depth, but don't we have a local kid who redshirted who some consider the steal of last year's class?

We lose some talent on the defensive side of the ball, but Syko should be delighted that we return our entire D-line except for maybe Taj Kaynor. The starters are back, anyway and have shown some real bright moments. I hope Kasa sticks around.

Linebackers: Smart and Moehler--two solid playmakers gone. But assuming we don't have a lot of transfers, we've got some real talent waiting in the wings.

The secondary will be pretty hard hit. Brown and Burney will be missed.

I know there's many who don't have a lot of confidence in this coaching staff to maximize the talent on the team...but, put that in the back of your mind. A year of growth can do wonders. A year of growth, and maybe a new Special Teams coach.

And temper that with the understanding that next year's schedule is MUCH MUCH MUCH tougher.

    :iagree:

if you can't come up with motivation or a game plan to beat Toledo what is Cal and Georgia going to do to you?

The red zone offense has cost cu the last 3 games,it must be addressed and fixed. The OL has to be fixed to be more consistent in all phases. Special teams are atrocious. Find a punt returner and fg kicker and a punter.

Our wr group next year will be pretty good. Need another big back in the running game.

Defense, keep building the DL and get rippy and major on the field.

With the tough road games I see 5 wins at best :sad1:

No one noticed, I guess, but I don't think we gave up a sack against the "best" defense in the Big XII. NU gave up 10.something points a game coming in. The O line grew up today. And believe me, they will take a lot from what they did today and carry it into next year.

The team made the same mistakes week after week, they were the most mudane, predictable team I've seen in decades. I have NO confidence in this staff. If Bohn did not put any conditions on Hawk regarding staff changes, no matter how much the team will grow, we'll be looking at a miserable 2010.

this. I don't really know what to expect out of next season. If Bohn doesn't force some staff changes, I expect minor improvement, but factoring in the schedule a very similar record.

Not giving up a sack is nice however it should be noted that is much more a result of the qb than the OL. Most QB's - even very, very good ones - take at least 3 sacks today.

Good point but hansen was running for his life all day. I'll say this, they played much better ve suh and their dl than I thought they would but they have lots of room for improvement.

I will go into this off-season laughing off anything hawk says, and will ignore any "great" quotes. Shut up, go win games.

I am very doubtful in his abilities, but now that the decision has been made I really want Dan to be successful. Nothing would make me happier than to have a team that earns 8+ wins a year, keeps a fine academic record and causes Mother Teresa to pale in comparison. Is it really possible to have the best of all worlds?

Damn, somebody get that kool-aid out of here.

I don't see WR as a reason for optimism. They continually run into coverage. They get no separation. When the QB scrambles, they demonstrated a staggeringly unfamiliar notion of coming back to him, or getting into his 'easily seen' fields of vision. Part of this is lack of familiarity with THAT quarterback - but replays kept showing an amazing lack of ANY receivers in easily seen areas, game after game, possession after possession. I was hoping to see a lot more of this in the final game, but it remained a complaint.

So I don't see any evidence they can learn this. They might - I hope so. But I didn't see them demonstrating it in these 12 games. Maybe they just need 13? 14?

cu's qb was running for his life that's why there were no sacks. He was just faster than the d-line.

To be a great defense, you need to be strong up the middle. They lose the entire middle, their 'vaunted' defense regress next season.

My mistake. I'd forgotten I'd started this nebraska thread. Congratulations on yesterday's victory. nebraska deserved the win.

    Now **** off; you're annoying.

I'm also excited about a shiny new paint job on the uprights to repair all of the damage Goodman has leveled on them. Whether it's Grossnickle or someone else, the kicking just can't help but be better, right? I look forward to not watching 70% of the field goal attempts from beyond the 40 missing.
