Is it time yet to worry about recruiting rankings?

If it's not time yet..when does that time arrive?

Do we not care about rankings on players?.......We think Hawk and staff can take a player and coach them up?

It is sickening to see the fat cats of college football, with the number of 5* and 4* players committed.......even people who stunk up the season like Michigan, ND, and Auburn. CU is about 62 on Rivals. What does Scout say?

I know we will fill the class..that goes without saying..but are we winning any recruiting battles for guys that Hawkins system really needs? The argument that it was hard for Hawk to win big when he didn't have players that fit his system is OK. But, is he now winning the battles to get the guys he needs?

Danged if I know..but I know others in the B12N are doing better at this stage.

62 on rivals is about what Barney was pulling in before Hawk got here...

I would say start worrying late January if we still don't have anything. Remember, there are suppposedly a few "silent" commits out there.

62 with 8 commits? not bad. double that and we should be top 40...

Hawk always closes late. its his style.

In short... I would say start worrying sometime in the 2d half of january, but reserve full out freakout mode until Feb 5th. no worries mate, Hawk can recruit.

My concern is that perception becomes reality.

Last season at this time, the '08 class was only about half full, with Scott, MTM, Doug Rippy, Rodney Stewart, and Bryce Givens still to come.

Problem is, there are no real star-quality recruits out there for the Buffs this season (pun intended). The high profile recruit from Colorado (Ryan Miller in '07; Jon Major in '08) is not coming to Boulder, and there are few "name" recruits on the board who have much interest in CU.

I have no doubt this will be a good class come February 4th. I'm equally confident, though, that it will be perceived as being a drop off from last year's class. :sad1:

Most of the big dogs already have their recruits committed, except for 5 or six scholarships. Hawkins will be fighting over the 15 to 20% of the blue chips that are uncommitted. He is a late closer, but it's getting close to the time to $hit or get off the pot. He pulled out some big ones late last year, and he will have to do it again. Nobody has signed yet, so you never know. Not being in a bowl is going to hurt - we need the exposure.

Last year's class was an exceptional year for the recent Buffs. I think everyone and their mothers expected a "drop-off" from last year. Doesn't mean we get a bad class, though. We are improving our depth chart and soon will improve our season record. Everything is good man, patience.

I think so. We won't be seeing the kind of class we landed last year

By this time last year we had 13 commits, Katoa, Major, Mohler and Cunningham among them

The year before 20 with, Hudgins, Simas, Miller, Daniels, Ballenger and Gates.

As discussed in another thread some work out some don't but they had still verballed by this time.

Many of the "Blue Chippers" we were in on early have committed and now I keep hearing these names pop up I haven't heard before. Then you look at the profile and they are one or two stars, sometimes three. It seems like we may be scrounging around for leftovers to fill out the class (I'm sure I'll get plenty of argument on this point)

If what seems to be the case is reality I'd rather see the staff abstain from filling all the schollies in hopes that we might have a better season next year and have more serious looks from top talent.

I don't know about the silent commits other than I seem to recall Darrell Scott was I believe represented as a "Silent Commit" and we came close to losing him to Texas before it was all over.

The season we had is being interpreted as regression by some writers. Kids want to go where they have a chance to start right away but playing for a winner has a tremendous pull on many of these kids. If you are Manti Teo wouldn't you want to have the chance to be a part of the stout defense SC fielded this year and maybe become the next big star on a defense like that? Tough to compete against.

In any event I sure hope I'm wrong and Hawk pulls a rabbit out of his hat, but I am worried about this cycle.

It's his style? Based on what? What would his "style" have been if NU hadn't been in a state of flux with the coaching change?

Coming to the table after the big boys eat isn't the way to get ahead. You need a few early ones that draw the later ones.

OK..so maybe Hawk is a great recruiter, and he closes on the ones he wants late. It's possible.

Here's another take that is possible. Last year there was a covergence of celestial bodies that only line up that way once in a great while..Scott comes because of his uncle..Major is a homie..the Fuskers fired their coach, and Mohler, Givens, and Rippy jump to CU. That was a lot of good talent that somewhat fell into Hawkins lap. I'm sure the staff deserves credit for reeling them in.........but really, how many times is something like that going to occur?

It's early..and I know the class is going to be full..a D1 school can always fill their scholies from HS athletes who want to play D1. It's just I see the competition getting a 3* or 4* commit, like on average maybe one a week. I'm starting to get antsy. Is there any recruiting insider here who might be able to make a guess on who is leaning or a probable commit. I understand the silent commits..but they are somewhat of a joke as well......man up and commit if you want to play for CU.

We only pulled 3 recruits last year from kNU. Mohler, Givens and Rippy. Other than that kNU had no effect on our recruiting.

We have no leans at this time. We will be lucky to get a couple 1* players to fill out the class. I doubt we even sign 15 players. We suck.

That's 3 of your best rated...and the ones they brought with them. Pretty sure Speedy isn't there if Rippy isn't. Take the little fella out of the backfiled this year and see what it looks like. That fella can play. Hell, take Mohler away and see what happens. He was pretty solid. It's not just numbersbut production as well.

    2009 Team Ranking
    PROSPECT COMMITMENTS
    1 USC 16 4 12 0 4.25 2,393
    2 Ohio State 24 1 15 8 3.71 2,329
    3 LSU 20 2 12 5 3.75 2,229
    4 Texas 19 1 12 6 3.74 2,048
    5 Alabama 19 2 9 8 3.68 2,007
These are the current Top 5 teams in recruiting by Rivals. Have you ever heard of any of these teams?
Are you really stupid enough to say rankings mean nothing?
Callahan was a bad coach, his players were good.

'77, nobody likes to admit the obvious. Callahan did bring in some good players but ended up not being able to coach. Just a simple fact. What else can explain new coaches doing more with the same guys?

Anyway, back to the topic...the ONLY teams I have ever watched fill up late and succeeed were PSU, FSU, Miami, SC and Florida. There may be a few others but these guys had the advantage of having all the "late decides" living in their states. Not so here. Huge difference.

PSU led the trend of filling up early after the Dan Kendra episode. They learned the hard way.

We suck. Our coaches can't recruit, they only get players when other coaches get fired. We will probably end up signing less than 15 guys, and most of them will be 1* players. No need to keep on typing out elaborate posts, we suck, no need to worry about us in the future.

I thought it was a solid class even without those three.

As for Speedy, nobody could've predicted the season he's had. I thought he'd be a good one. But not that good.

But you're right. The only reason for our recruiting success was because of kNU firing their coach.

It's probably easier to just not read the posts...or, if you like to ignore the elephant in the corner, I'm sure Netbuffs needs another poster.

People seem to forget that even after a down year CU is still a premier destination campus/school in the premier conference in college football. Kids want to play in the Big XII. Colorado does better than half of the conference on autopilot. One strength about Hawk is he is a strong recruiter, our recruiting is not on autopilot.

Wake me on February 3rd, when the "commitments" are official.

If all of Calli's kNU recruits were as good as the corn fans thought (think) they were based on message board comments Bo must really suck because they should be in the BCS this year.

When you have a state with nothing worth paying attention to but a college football program and that program becomes an obsession reality gets thrown out the window.
The recruiting services will always hype up the husker recruits because they know that kNU fans will pay good money to hear people say good things about what has become their core identity as a state.

Should we ask Brown, Stoops, Meyer, Saban and Carroll too???

Hey I see your point V, but it can be looked at from another angle as well.

It's not the end of the world for the Buffs recruiting wise but I don't think it will be another monster class based on a solid season with the "sky's the limit" potential.
