You're joking right? You think Mark Helfrich, a guy who is from Oregon, has coached at multiple schools in the PAC 12, and spent the last 4 years as OC at Oregon before becoming their HC is as much of an unknown as Mac whose only coaching experience west of the Mississippi River was 3 years in the WAC??

I have my doubts about whether Helfrich can sustain what Kelly built at Oregon, but c'mon.

And I'll add that offers from schools coming off Rose Bowl wins where their coach left for an NFL job generally look more appealing than from a school that finished 1-11 and fired their coach (and former player) after only 2 seasons.

I think you guys are underestimating the program strength of Oregon here. One big advantage in the short-term for Helfrich is kids can believe him when he says he will be at Oregon for the long haul. The uncertainty surrounding Kelly really hurt them this past recruiting cycle. Add them getting a big-time closer in Matt Lubick and we need to put up a hell of a fight to land Jones.

Yes, it hurts the value. Does it hurt the value a lot? not yet. this year could be a rollercoaster for Oregon fans. However, I think any real changes won't be seen until next year.

And there is that little issue called "facilities" which may or may not include cheerleaders.

lemme rephrase and thanks for moving it out of recruiting...Yes it hurts in the short term and it will only gap will widen considerably should his coaching falter even slightly...but an oregon offer is not the same oregon offer it was 3 months ago and thats before the sanction hammer falls from the ncaa

I'm with Duff on this one. I do not think that any prestige has been lost at Oregon right now. The danger that I see is that expectations are ridiculously high for the program. I could see a situation where they go 10-3 and fans start questioning if Helfrich was the right choice.

    ^^This^^

They may lose a little bit due to the name recognition of Kelly but it is very hard for kids to ignore bowl trophies, national TV games, winning records, full stadiums, and all the rest that goes with a team that has won as much as Oregon has the past few years.

Theory: Helfrich is going to be a better recruiter for Oregon than Chip Kelly was, so any dropoff will be slight, even if their onfield performance takes a step back.

For the 2014 class, I think it is entirely possible. Most of these recruits already know Helfrich and the offense/facilities/uniforms did not leave with Chip Kelly.

Yup. by 2015 though, if Mr. Helfrich is not up to snuff, there will be cracks showing in the formation.

Helfrich is not Kelly. That being said, the value of the offer won't be significantly less now. It will be four years from now.

It only hurts if Helfrich goes like 8-4 this year. Chip could absorb that without any impact, but it would raise major questions about the program under Helfrich. But he goes into this recruiting cycle with recruits coveting an Oregon offer.

For how much Kelly flirted with the NFL in recent years, any athletes who went to Oregon because of him are idiots. Helfrich as head coach only brings more stability to the position, and I sure don't see him in that position hurting recruiting. Kelly didn't take any of the flashy stuff with him either.

Phil Knight is the only one that matters. As long as he keeps dumping buckets of money into Eugene, they will be good. Wish CU had someone similar.

I disagree. He is huge, don't get me wrong. But to say he is the only one the matters is preposterous. Because of Knight, you can bring a boatload of coaches in to Oregon that can compete at a certain level, but you can't bring many in that can compete at a Chip Kelly level.

You underestimate the power of $15 Billion dollars. For perspective, the entire endowment at CU is around $900 million.

Kelly bombs in the NFL and takes a job at CU as Offensive Coordinator.

    Dreaming of course.
