Is the massive turnover we're seeing ok? Or why Reddit CFB fans are clueless

The only answer to the thread subject is that we were 1-11 last year.

And the only reason we weren't 0-12 is because it's surprisingly difficult to actually go 0-12.

Basically, we even failed at losing.
Yep! But one of the best losers.

I think Charlie Offerdahl is an interesting name to bring up here. I didn't know who he was until Adam mentioned him in one of those postgame analysis videos after last year.....Minnesota? Prime has talked about him a few times-he's going to have a number, etc.

This isn't just talent. This is cultural too.

This checks out. I know a coach from DRHS in Littleton and he said that Offerdahl was the hardest working and most humble kid he ever coached. Mentioned he would love to have a team full of Charlie’s and that he came from a really good family.
The thing about Offerdahl and many walk-ons that aren't specialists is that they play because they want to be there. Most have that chip on their shoulder that drives them to prove they belong, and they usually have a great work ethic. They are great teammates because they everything they are asked to do and give full effort.

I watched the "spring game" and thought.... holy $h!t! we still have small, slow players on the field!!!!

and then most of them left today.

Serious question.... Did Prime let a lot of these kids play knowing that this was it for them? I actually think that was a very NICE thing to do for the players that left.

Yes. He said as much before and during the broadcast. ("This is not the team we will be playing with in Dallas", "We haven't even gotten started in the portal", etc.)

Wait…when was the last bowl game the nubs went to again? When was the last conference championship game they played…

He's the best example of my point, though.

I am beginning to think the reaction by some people is not so much about CU and CP himself but rather about the fact that to a certain degree CP symbolises how the game has changed in the last few years as a result of the portal, NIL etc. and they just want the old CFB they grew up with back.

Nah. Saban, Smart, Urban Meyer, Lincoln Riley, etc. have been cutthroat like this for years. I mean the amount of players who miraculously suffer career ending injuries after spring practices their freshman year in Tuscaloosa is a statistical anomaly that should blow everyone's mind. No one says ****. People suddenly have a problem when it's a black guy who's playing the game and tells you how and, more importantly, why he's doing it.

Lot of truth to that.

I'm nostalgic for some things about the "good ole days" of college football. But I'm also aware that 1) I certainly remember things as better than they actually were, 2) I was ignorant about a lot of things that made my perceptions based on a false reality, and 3) the only constant in life is change, you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, so you either roll with what it now is or check out.

Don't you think both can be true?

Prime has to a degree supercharged things like the portal by essentially flipping an entire roster in one offseason. That is pretty much unprecedented. Racism will always play a role in the United States in 2023, but I don't think it's the only factor at play. Some people on Reddit basically seem pissed because he's taking a shortcut and are essentially stating that he should first try coaching them up like a "proper coach" and I think that very much supports my hypothesis.

Also, Prime isn't just "any black guy" given his career. He's very charismatic, has a personality and has always been a bit divisive and polarising plus I am not sure there's ever been a player of his stature and caliber who has gone into coaching and basically walked into a head coaching job without "working his way up" first.

tl, dr: It's complicated.

This, the difference between Prime and the old, established guys is not that Prime is doing anything that the others haven't done, it is that he is accelerating the process and more importantly he is being honest about it.

Does anyone think that 5* football players are going to Alabama or Georgia because they are impressed with the academic programs there? No, it is the business of football. They are going there because those schools send guys to the NFL. Guys who sign at those schools then aren't good enough to contribute to competing for NCs find themselves looking for someplace else to finish their careers.

They just aren't entering the portal at a rate of 18 in one day.

The fact that Prime is a high visibility Black man who has a style that appeals to young people is something that many of those fans won't admit but they hate because he doesn't defer to the white guys.

Everyone use "1-11" to describe the team last year.

No, it's not accurate. Everyone should use "one of the worst team in the CFB history" to describe last year's team. It's historically bad. There are plenty of G5 teams that can name their scores if they play us. 0-12 UW team would easily beat us. Hell, even JE's 2012 team would beat us.

I understand the stupid reaction from other fan base, they didn't endure the pain we endure, they didn't have to watch the team we watch every Saturday. But for any long time Colorado fans, this should be music to your ear. Only this scale of change could save us. There is no other way.
What about my other ear?

I'll see if I can dig it up, but there was something years ago where they asked players about the NCAA scholarship rules. Alabama players were among the only that knew that scholarships are technically a year-to-year agreement. It's not only part of the pitch at Alabama, but a feature. Not only does no one bat an eye, but everyone talks with admiration about Saban doing that stuff.

But when it's Prime...

Yeah, there’s some of the “CP hasn’t paid his dues” or he “hasn’t come up through the ranks” stuff going on, even while it’s not said overtly.

This is exactly what I was thinking as I was reading Reddit CFP - with the addition that, for some, it's CP's personality rather than race. Seems like anyone who shared an opinion like this was downvoted and told they were "drinking the Kool-Aid."

I know Ron the football coach over there pretty well because he's a game manager for their basketball.. he told me the same thing. Seeing Charlie have success in Boulder is awesome

Those people are just antsy for the next CFB videogame to come out so they can live in their past CFB fantasies on those slow Saturdays before the season starts.

Either you keep watching or you quit watching regardless of the changes. Or you can move down to FCS & D2 football.

Dude …

I don't usually go to r/cfb, but I recently checked out some threads there and was amused by the number of fans who think they know CU better than we do. They claim to know the roster better than us, even though they probably haven't watched a single CU game in the past 15 years.

"I know they are bad as 1-11 team but ...."
"Of course Deion can coach those players up, most of those players got p5 offer out of HS!"
"The players they bring in are not as good as the players they lost"
"This is the worse hire you can do, you should hire xxxx/xxx and build the team in the right way"

No, you have no ****ing idea about CU, and no ****ing business telling us what's the best for CU.

According to Reddit you let the cancer grow instead of cutting it out ASAP

Here is another thread:

Between the two of them, here are a few of my favorite comments

See but that's not necessarily true. Several CU transfers have already transferred to other P5 schools. Every single one that has successfully transferred thus far has ended up in D1, at lowest FCS*.

And almost all of the players that transferred out had multiple P5/G5 offers out of high school*. Could bad coaching have ruined them? Possibly, but I do think he could've made the most of them, if he's as good a coach he thinks he is.

*According to 247sports

I saw in the previous post that Colorado is expected to only have 67 scholarship players when fall camp starts. Do they not understand why Kansas was so bad for so long in the 2010's? It's because their roster got decimated and they were 10+ scholarship players down for years and couldn't recover. They just now have reached 85 scholarships again. Being that many players under 85 is going to create insane depth issues. It doesn't help that many of the players they will have weren't able to crack the 2-3 deep at their original schools in the first place.

This is where I’m at. Deion is most likely going to fail spectacularly (he’s a terrible coach who can only win with a huge talent edge)—but even if he does, the next guy who takes over in 2-3 years will have a much improved roster to take over. So it seems low risk

Deion gives me Jason Brown from Last Chance U vibes. We basically get to see how a Juco team will do in P5.

It is not going to go over well. Offense and Defense is gonna barely be able to install.

This team is going to fuxkjng terrible. Spare me the “you can’t get worse than 1-11.” You most certainly can.

Gonna be fun to watch Prime dip out 2 years in and blame CU administration or something.

The meltdown when CU fans/players turn on “4-star” shedeur when they realize he isn’t actually good and was given the spot only because of his relationship to the HC will be hilarious.

This isn’t TAPPS anymore

Most of the players you are bringing in are scrubs with offers from only lower tier programs though.

Your strategy only works if you’re beating out good p5 programs for your incoming transfers. Not Texas state and FAU
