Soccer (5-3-1, 2-2-1) is scheduled to have a short one match road trip for what looks to be a very competitive match against the Utes (2-5-2, 1-3-1) this Saturday. Like the Buffs, the Utes are coming off their biggest win of the season by beating the Trojans, as Utah beat them 2-0 last Friday.

The game is scheduled to be on the Pac 12 Mountain channel. (More detail below.)

SALT LAKE CITY – Colorado will head over the Rocky Mountains and make the quick visit to Utah for its only match of the week on Saturday. The Buffaloes and Utes will battle it out in a non-conference game at 11:30 a.m. MT on the Pac-12 Networks.

Colorado (5-3-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12) is coming off four consecutive matches against ranked opponents. CU upset then-No. 10 California in Berkeley and then-No. 14 Southern California on Monday to go an even 2-2 during the tough stretch.

"Utah's playing well," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "It's a single game weekend. It's a non-conference game but at the end of the day it's still a Pac-12 game against a team that's well-coached and had a good weekend last weekend as well."
...

Utah (2-5-2, 1-3-1 Pac-12) has played its last six matches against ranked opponents, going 1-4-1. The Utes opened last week with a 2-0 win over USC. The gauntlet of a stretch for the Utes started with back-to-back games against then-No. 15 Washington State.

CU owns an 8-6-2 overall record over the Utes but have finished on the wrong end of 1-0 decisions the past two meetings.

Looking ahead, Colorado will play four of its final six games at home. The Buffs will host Washington State in another single-match weekend. The team will then hit the road for two against Oregon State and Oregon, before closing at home against Arizona, Arizona State and Utah.

Buffs are in position for finishing in the top half of the conference and perhaps an NCAA tourney bid. This would put them ahead of projections for this spring. Beating Utah will be critical in finishing in the upper half of the conference.

Really, I nice turnaround from the first part of the season. They are much better in the attack now - despite being partially dependent on freshmen (James and Willis in particular).

Tough start to the match, as defensive stalwart Hannah Cardenas, who just came back from injury a match or two ago, has to be helped off the field (although at least she was able to walk off), limping pretty badly in her already braced left knee.

GOOAAALLLL by the Buffs at the start of the 6th minute, with freshman James continuing her hot streak!

Weather note- sounds like a rainy day in Salt Lake City today, as I'm hearing HEAVY drops on the broadcast.

I assume the announcer and at much as possible production is being done off-site, but kind of embarrassing both the announcer and broadcast score shows the Buffs up 2-0 now for many minutes, but unfortunately the 2nd goal was called off due to an offsides, but they still haven't corrected it.

And 1-0 is the halftime score.

Utah is showing up 9-13 in shots and the Buffs are only up 3-2 in shots on goal, but I'd say CU has had the better opportunities overall.

Keep it up in the 2nd Buffs!

The Buffs get the W 1-0!!!

(I'm sure assisted by Utah's nothing-to-lose aggression down 1, the Buffs survived in spite of going into the soccer version of the prevent defense that led to the Utes having many great chances in the last 15-20 minutes of the match.)

SALT LAKE CITY -- Danny Sanchez's Colorado Buffaloes got an early goal and were able to hold on for a 1-0 decision against Utah on Saturday.

Colorado (6-3-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12) scored on the team's first shot of the match thanks to a Shyra James strike into the top right corner. Utah attacked well for the majority of the contest but could not break through for an equalizer.

"We talked about getting off to a fast start because other than the Cal game we've been chasing goals," Danny Sanchez commented after the game. "I thought in the first half we played well. It was unfortunate that we didn't get that second goal. You can see how well Utah is playing though. Their ball movement was excellent today. But on the road, in these kinds of conditions, against a team that is playing well, it's a quality win."

Utah (2-6-2, 1-3-1 Pac-12) outshot the Buffaloes 21-14 on the day. Colorado's James was very active up front for the Buffaloes with five shots along with the lone goal of the contest. Dani Hansen came up strong with six saves and her fourth shutout of the year while Utah's Chelsea Peterson and SJ Edwards combined for four saves.
...

"We were probably on our heels for the last 25 minutes of the half," said Sanchez. "Having said that, that's a part of being up 1-0. You have to defend. To get a result like this on the road in these conditions is big for us."

BY THE NUMBERS
Colorado
Goals:
1
Shots: 14
Fouls: 4
Saves: 6

Utah
Goals:
0
Shots: 21
Fouls: 3

UP NEXT: The Colorado women's soccer team will return to Prentup Field next Saturday where they will host Washington State in a 1 p.m. MT. matchup.

NOTES: James' goal was her fourth of the season, tying Hannah Sharts for th team lead...Sharts was credited with an assist on the goal, her first of the season...James and Sharts are tied for the team lead with nine points this season...the win snapped a two-game skid against Utah...each of the last three matches between CU and Utah have been 1-0 decisions...Hansen now has 55 saves on the season...the win was Coach Sanchez's 101st at CU.
