Many of the starters from Monday's game will most likely get a good amount of rest in Thursday's match as they recover from the physical strain from the heat and intensity. In both matches it's a goof bet there will be a lot of playing time for the second and third teams. On paper, neither opponent will be much of a challenge.

I would agree that Commerce, in its 1st year in D1, and having been outscored 0-9 so far this season in matches against teams (Oral Roberts, Louisiana - Monroe and UT - San Antonio) that wouldn't normally strike fear in the Buffs, should be a good opportunity for a Buff win***. (***Although with, I always guess, coaches considering complacency one of the worst "sins" a team can commit on a game/ match day, I'm sure that's not what Coach Sanchez and company are thinking and saying.)

However, the Buffs had better not take Omaha lightly, as they already are 2 for 2 in solid performances against P5 schools this season, losing only 1-2 against OK State (who finished very close to CU last season in RPI (54 CU vs. 62 OSU)), and then tieing Missouri 1-1 in its last match a couple days ago.

Layne gets Buff goal #2 in the 44th minute off a cross from Newkirk (with Rosen also credited with an assist).

It's 2-0 CU at the half.

And it's quickly 3-0 as a Kuhlman cross gets past the goalie and right to Webb's head, and she pounds it home.

Layne earns her brace as she gets goal #6 for the Buffs on an assist from Duguid.

Commerce just was not big, strong or fast enough to stay with CU. Seems to me they got tired and the altitude and heat wore them out. kayley Webb's grandma fainted due to dehydration right before the game started and it caused stress. She was all right but there was stress for sure

Article after today's win.
(Also, wanted to note it was an overall GOOD day for the Pac 12, as 3 schools followed the Buff's nice results from Monday with even better one's of their own, with #6 UCLA going to Durham and beating #2 Duke, unranked USC took down #6 TCU 3-0, and #12 Stanford just took down #8 Penn State.)

BOULDER— No. 20 Colorado exploded for four-second half goals in the team's 6-0 shutout victory over Texas A&M University-Commerce on Thursday.

The Buffs were paced by two goals from Shyra James and Emerson Layne. James' goals extended her scoring streak to nine-straight matches and in the process passed former Buff Fran Munnelly (2005) for the longest point streak in CU history. Her first goal of the day also marked the 800th goal in program history.

"The team is very aware of everything," head coach Danny Sanchez said about James' streak. "I think they are more pleased with us scoring a goal. I think the cheers were just as loud for the other players that got goals. We're pleased for her [James], but we're pleased with our performance."

Lindsey Smith made her first career start, making three saves in the win. Thursday was CU's third shutout win of the season, but Smith is the only goalie to play all 90 minutes while holding the opposition scoreless.

"We felt that Lindsey has been performing well in training and deserved an opportunity," Sanchez added. "She played two years at Memphis without any playing time. I thought she was very good. She made three saves and they were difficult ones to deal with. She dealt with some corners and got the shutout."

Civana Kuhlmann started the onslaught with her fourth goal of the season, while Kayleigh Webb notched her first goal of the year to help the Buffs move to 4-0-1 on the season.

"This was a dangerous match," Sanchez added. "You have a team [Texas A&M Commerce] that's got everything to play for and nothing to lose and a very good coach in Ashely [Gordon]. Coming off an emotionally draining match [at BYU] on Monday, I thought we were slow out of the box. We weren't playing with rhythm. I was very pleased with the second half.
...

Colorado totaled 24 shots in the second half and outshot the Lions 38-6.

"I think we just had a higher intensity in the second half," Layne offered up. "We knew what we had to do and we just got it done."

Up Next
Colorado will continue at home on Sunday, hosting Omaha at Prentup Field (1 p.m. MT).

Notes
Colorado's 38 shots were the most since posting 39 in a 1-0 win over Alabama on Sept. 6, 2013…CU's 21 goals through five games are the most to start a season…James tied Brie Hooks for 7th on CU's all-time goal-scoring list with 21 on her career…She also moves into eighth on CU's all-time points list with 44 career points (21 G, 3 A)...CU's six goals were the most since posting six in a win over Northern Colorado in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

CU 6, Texas A&M Commerce 0.

Set pieces? In this match they weren’t as integral to CU’s goal scoring as in previous previous matches this season. Also, this was a good time to schedule a D1 newcomer in Texas A&M-Commerce coming off an extremely tough match - opponent, temperature and pitch conditions - at BYU on Monday afternoon. Add to this CU’s top two keepers are dealing with injuries which allowed transfer Lindsey Smith to get the start and play the full 90, her first minutes with the Buffs.

As has been the case in many of CU’s matches this season, they got off to a slow start. For most of the first half they looked like they were just going through the motions. Perhaps there was a bit of a hangover from the BYU match, but still the Buffs were just not in sync or playing with much energy. The Lions actually had more shots on goal for much of the half than CU.

The first goal of the match came via a Civana Kuhlmann PK in the 18th minute after a cross into the box found the arm of a defender. It was Kuhlmann’s fourth goal of the season. The Buffs second goal of the half came when Emerson Layne appeared to get a slight touch on a flighted ball into the box which then found its way past the keeper.

In the second half CU really took control of the match, scoring four more goals by dominating possession and creating chance after chance. Texas A&M-Commerce recorded no shots on goal in the half although they did create a golden opportunity once when they were able to catch the Buffs with a bit of a counter attack, moving the ball quickly into the box then hitting a ball across the goal mouth that was somehow not put in by a wide open teammate. The Lions have yet to score this season.

At the other end the Buffs created wave after wave attacks often by moving the ball quickly through midfield and into the attacking third. They wound up with something like 15 shots on goal for the half. Senior Kaleigh Webb scored her first of the season heading in a wonderful left footed cross from Kuhlmann in the 47th minute. From there it was just shot after shot, 13 on goal in the half.

Shyra James got the next two goals, the first on a through ball from Juliuana Hayward where James somehow got behind three defenders and had a simple turn to hit it in. The second was from a hard angle, similar to the goal tying goal she scored at BYU only from the right side. CU’s final goal came from Layne in the 78th minute.

James now has scored in nine consecutive matches and is tied with Imani Jenkins of Hartford for D1 goals thus far with seven total in five games.

As has been in the case in all of CU’s four home matches, lots of Buffs got playing time. A whopping 24 field players got on the pitch and starters Hannah Sharts and Lawson Willis who went the full 90 only played about 45 minutes each.

]CU hosts Omaha on Sunday at 1pm. Omaha is coming off a 0-1 loss at Northern Colorado on Thursday. It’s gonna be another hot one as the heat dome continues over Boulder with a forecast high in the low 90s.

BOULDER— No. 20 Colorado hopes to keep its offensive prowess rolling when Omaha comes to town on Sunday (1 p.m. MT). The Buffaloes have posted a record 21 goals to start the 2022 season.

The 4-0-1 Buffs enter Sunday's match with the No. 4 scoring offense in the nation, averaging 4.20 goals per game. Colorado's 21 goals are just 10 shy of all last season's total and have already outscored three complete seasons.

Junior Shyra James is tied for the nation's leader in goals (7) and points (14). James has scored in all five games for the Buffs and has a nine-match scoring streak dating back to the end of the 2021 season. Stanford transfer Civana Kuhlmann has added an extra spark for the Buffs, contributing four goals and two assists in her first five games as a Buff.

15 different players have helped fuel Colorado's offensive outburst this season, just three shy of the team's 18 different players to have a point in 2021.
...

"All of us are friends on and off the field," Webb said about the team's composition. "We want the best for each other, no matter what. It doesn't matter if you're starting or coming off the bench. Everyone wants everyone to succeed. I think that's the biggest thing. Whoever scores, whoever gets us the win—that's what matters. That's been pushing us to score as many goals as we can. We're being unselfish and everyone's getting goals."

Colorado knows it has to take care of business in the non-conference season to prepare for the ultra-competitive Pac-12 season on the horizon.

"We know it's going to get harder," Kuhlmann mentioned. "We're glad to be taking care of these games because we should. It's really good momentum for us going forward."

Omaha (1-2-2) comes into the match, having dropped its weekend opener at Northern Colorado. Sunday will be the first meeting between the Mavericks and the Buffs.

Fans are encouraged to bring donations of new backpacks, fleece blankets, stuffed animals, coloring books, crayons and chapstick to support Porchlight, A Family Justice Center.
