The soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0) continues its season this weekend, 1st hosting Valparaiso (1-0-1, 0-0-0) tomorrow afternoon, followed up by potentially one of if not its toughest matches of the season as it visits the #9 BYU Cougars Monday afternoon.

Friday's match is scheduled to be on the Pac 12 Networks, while Monday's is on BYUTV (for those who get it). (See more details near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER—Two games into the 2022 season and Civana Kuhlmann's assimilation to the Colorado Buffaloes soccer program seems flawless.

The early returns seem to agree, having started both matches for the Buffs and netting two goals in last Sunday's 5-1 win over San Diego.

But first, the background.
...

The No. 25 Buffs will host Valparaiso (1-0-1) at Prentup Field on Friday. The match is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Thad Anderson will have the call on the Pac-12 Networks.

Got to take care of business against Valpo, but looking ahead we've got the BYU and Michigan opportunities that could establish our Buffs as a top team this year.

need to come out with a little more fire that the last two and not let Valpo control the ball early

need to come out with a little more fire that the last two and not let Valpo control the ball early
First half in the first two matches was indeed a bit anemic. There definitely need to have more urgency to start that game. And they can't be looking forward to the big match on Monday afternoon at BYU.

Buffs score again in the 11th minute after James (from Newkirk) pounds a rebound in after anorther free kick into the box leads to a couple shots before the scorer!

2-0

Buffs didn't seem to have the energy they did in the previous two wins, but still it was no contest.

BOULDER—Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez became the Buffaloes' all-time winningest coach with his team's 3-0 win over Valparaiso on Friday.

Sanchez, in his 11th season, moved past legendary CU head coach Bill Hempen, earning his 115th career win in the Black and Gold.

"I want to give a lot of credit to my predecessor, Bill Hempen," Sanchez said in gratitude. "I think he put CU soccer on the map. Not only regionally, but nationally with not only a Big 12 championship but with the players that he brought into the program. When Jason [Green] and I took over in 2012 and Dave joined us in 2015 our goal was to develop CU into a perennial NCAA Tournament team. I think we've done that. We're excited about the future. As far as the win record, it's a byproduct of being her 11 years I think."

Sanchez got the full Gatorade bath treatment from the No. 25 Buffs after the final whistle.

"We're really excited for Danny," fifth-year defender Hannah Sharts exclaimed. "We had an idea we were going to shower him. We were pretty confident that we're going to be able to get the win and give him the celebration he deserves."

Colorado will head to Provo, Utah, for its first road test of the season on Monday (3 p.m. MT/BYUtv). The No. 9 Cougars, who were the national runner-up a year ago, picked up a 2-0 win over No. 20 Ohio State on Friday.

Notes
Colorado is now 3-0 for the fifth time under Coach Sanchez…CU's 13 goals in three games are the most since scoring 13 in three games in 2018 (6 vs Missouri, 4 vs UTSA, 3 vs Iowa State)…James moved into solo eighth on CU's all-time goal scorer list with 18…She now has 39 career points (18 G, 3 A), two shy of matching Danica Evans' 41 (2015-16) for 10th on CU's top points list…Colorado has nine set-piece goals this season, just one shy of all last season…The Buffs have had 13 different players record a point this season (18 last season).

In a match that featured a fair number of yellow cards (by college standards) and a boisterous group of Valparaiso fans, the Buffs won 3-0 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

There were a couple of changes to the starting line up from the previous match, the most notable being Jenny Beyer in the midfield. Beyer had only been back with the Buffs for a few days following her time with the German national team at the U-20 World Championship. And she made a quick impact by scoring off a free kick in the eleventh minute.

The other change was on the back line with Jayden Newkirk starting on the outside which moved Hannah Cardenas inside to pair with Hannah Sharts at CB. Lawson Willis was the other outside back. This meant Phoenix Miranda began on the bench.

For much of the first half CU was on the front foot putting a lot of pressure on Valparaiso recording 8 shots on goal. Two of them made it into the net, goal first being Beyer’s which was actually a left footed service into the box off a free kick. Valparaiso’s keeper was caught watching the run into the box and when no contact was made the ball skipped past her.

Although the CU’s second goal didn’t come directly from a set piece, it was an indirect result as Shyra James was able to collect a ball that had ping ponged and slam it home. It was her fourth goal of the season.

While CU had 8 shots on goal in the half, Valparaiso had one. That would change in the second half as CU seemed to be satisfied with the score line while Valpo was able to create a couple of solid chances. Still the outcome didn’t ever seem to be in doubt. And when Civana Kuhlmann buried a shot from the top of the box it truly sealed the outcome.

This was head coach Danny Sanchez’s 115 win at CU, which is a program record.

Monday afternoon the CU faces what could be their biggest challenge of the non-conference schedule when they travel to BYU. Game time is 3pm MT.

seems like teams are playing physical against CU. Valpo was one. The ref let them play as well.

Wanted to note, for anyone interested and able to watch tomorrow's match who hasn't checked it out yet- byutv, which is showing the game, is eligible to be viewed after signing up for a free account IF you can't view the channel as part of your cable/ satellite/ cord cutting subscription. (I have never had any previous interest in finding that network, so have no idea how commonly carried it is as part of channel packages.)

The place I went to sign up for the account is https://www.byutv.org/account/create .

Also, per https://www.byutv.org/apps, it looks like there is a BYUTV app available for Android, Apple, Roku and Amazon devices.

PROVO—The No. 25 Colorado Buffaloes hit the road for the first time in 2022, traveling to No. 9 BYU on Monday (3 p.m. MT).

The Buffs enter the third week of the season with a perfect 3-0 record. Colorado is the only Pac-12 school to hit double-digits in total goals so far this season, totaling 13 goals in its three games. The Buffs are averaging 4.33 goals per game early on this season with its lowest output of three coming against Valparaiso.

"I thought we were a little sluggish [Friday]," head coach Danny Sanchez said after moving to 3-0. "I think we had one eye on Monday [BYU]. We know the challenge of going to Provo to play BYU, the national runners-up. We're excited about the opportunity. This is why our players come to CU. To play in these big games. We're excited about the challenge but like I told the team there are still 16 more games after Monday. Win, lose or draw, there's still going to be 16 more games."

BYU (2-0) is fresh off a 2-0 win over No. 20 Ohio State on Friday. The Cougars, the 2022 national runner up, return eight starters from their College Cup run. BYU opened the season No. 3 in the rankings, its highest preseason ranking in program history.

The last time the two schools played in the spring, but the last time CU faced BYU in regular season play was in 2017. The Buffs picked up a 3-0 win over BYU. Taylor Kornieck opened the scoring and Tatum Barton put in two more in Boulder. The Buffs have yet to earn a result in Provo.

"It's a tough place to play at but I think we're ready," fifth-year defender Hannah Sharts commented.

Monday's game will be televised on BYUtv.

Buffs have weathered the storm and it's 0-0 at the half. (Shots are 13-2 in favor of BYU.)

I am assuming Dani Hansen is injured?

Lot’s of possession and shots by BYU, but few on target and most from outside the box.

Buff subs brought more energy than the starter.

Very nice result overall for the Buffs, as they're able to come back from 2 deficits (0-1 and 1-2) to earn a hard fought 1 point with a 2-2 tie.

Buffs goals were by Beyer (for the 2nd time this season, a Buff was able to bend a corner kick directly into the net) and James with a beautiful patient breakaway goal with around 9 minutes left!

Way to go BUFFS!

1st Goal highlight-

really great result. they need to do a better job of ball control imo
Yup. They rarely won second balls which put them under constant pressure. In general, they did a good job of contesting shots in the box.

It was BYU’s quantity - 70% possession and 31 shots versus Colorado’s quality - 6 shots, 2 goals. The final score was 2-2.

Watching the match, in some it’s hard to believe CU was able to tie this match. For great stretches of time BYU won almost every second ball around midfield which allowed they to push into the attack quickly and with little opposition. That is until they attempted to get the ball into the box where CU was frequently able to close space and block shots. Of the 31 shots taken by BYU only 8 were on target. Many of these shots were from outside the box.

At this point, it needs to be mentioned that Bella Grust started in goal. The assumption is that regular starter Dani Hansen was injured. For the most part she did very well with the possible exception of BYU’s first goal which came from outside the box and she seemed to have covered but somehow it went through her.

Kudos to CU’s quick response to BYU’s goal. Jenny Beyer bent in an olimpico off a corner which seemed to confound the keeper who punched it only after it had crossed the line.

With BYU continuing to win most of the second balls and getting into the final third the Buffs conceded again from a shot outside the box. This time Grust had no chance to make the save on a wonderfully stuck curling shot.

Still, the Buffs didn’t give up. And finally they got the chance they are built for when Juliuana hit a through ball to Shyra James who held off defenders as she dibbled until the keeper started to come out at which point she hit a perfect shot across goal and into the net. One shot, one goal for James in this match. That’s quality. And she has now scored in 8 consecutive matches.

BYU wasn’t done, but CU was able to hang on for the final 10 minutes.

This was a great result for CU. At the same time, they have to figure out how to control more possession starting with winning second balls off goal kicks, etc.

The heat may have had an impact on the match and the pitch looked in poor condition. Not these factors made a difference or not. Two field players went the full 90, Hannah Sharts and Lawson Willis.

CU returns home to face D1 newcomers Texas A&M - Commerce on Thursday afternoon.

PROVO - The No. 25 Colorado soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with the No. 9 BYU Cougars in hot and dry conditions at South Field Monday afternoon.

The Buffaloes found themselves down 1-0 and 2-1 and fought back to earn their first-ever result in Provo and keep their early unbeaten record intact.

"You can see why BYU rarely drops points at home," explained Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "They threw everything at us. But I was really proud of how we responded twice after going down a goal. I think it says a lot about the character of the group and it's a good result on the road and hopefully gives us more momentum as we get more into the season."

Junior forward Shyra James had the final equalizer in the 81st minute to make the score 2-2 as she secured her fifth goal of the year. The goal also extends James' scoring streak to eight games dating back to the 2021 season.

"The streak is on my mind every game day," said James after the match. "After I scored, I just yelled, 'eight games, eight games!' It's always on my mind and it's always a goal to keep the streak going."

Sophomore midfielder Jenny Beyer also got on the score sheet for the Buffs when she curled in a right-footed shot directly off a corner kick into the near post and past Cougar goalkeeper Savanna Mason for her second goal of the 2022 season.

Bella Grust was solid all afternoon, recording a career-high six saves off BYU's 31 shots.

"Bella has been fantastic," said Sanchez. "We've always said that we have confidence in all of our goalkeepers and I thought she really stepped up today. There was never really a moment for her to rest and relax and she kept us in the game early. We're super proud of her effort and what she did today."

Olivia Wade and Jamie Shepherd were the goal scorers for BYU while Mason had one save for the Cougars.
...

What it means
Colorado earned a result against a top-10 opponent and the national-runner up on the road which will surely boost the Buffs' postseason tournament resume.

Notes
James' goal ties her with Fran Munnelly (Sept. 23-Oct. 16, 2005) for the longest consecutive point streak (eight games) in CU history...New to the NCAA this year is the elimination of overtime after 90 minutes in regular season play.

Up Next
The Buffs will return to Prentup Field Thursday, September 1st where they will host Texas A&M-Commerce at 4 p.m.
