VBall starts their season hosting their own Buffs' Invitational, with a doulble header Friday (Vs. Green Bay starting at 10:00 AM MT followed by Western Michigan at 7:00 PM MT) followed up with DU coming into town Saturday evening (beginning at 6:00 PM MT).

Both of Friday's matches are scheduled to be streaming via Pac 12 Insider, while Saturday's is slotted for the Pac 12 Network. (More detail near the bottom of this post. In addition, the Buffs are hopefully starting a trend where they'll also be streaming matches when the Buffs aren't involved, as the CU schedule shows both Friday evening's Denver-Green Bay and Saturday afternoon's Green Bay - Western Michigan matches showing as being available through "Colorado Live Stream".)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team kicks off the 2022 season this weekend at home in the Buffs Invitational.

Colorado, which is in its seventh season under head coach Jesse Mahoney, will face Green Bay Friday at 10 a.m., followed by a night match against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. The Buffs close out the tournament Saturday night against Denver at 6 p.m.

CU is coming off a 15-14 season that ended in a 10th-place finish in the Pac-12 standings. The team started the season with a school record nine straight wins throughout the non-conference schedule before finishing 6-14 in conference play.

The Buffs are an outstanding 24-2 (.923) in home non-conference matches under Mahoney, who will face his former team in Denver for the first time since taking over at CU.

Friday's matches will be streamed on Pac-12 Insider as well as the CUBuffs Live Stream, while Saturday's finale will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

SCOUTING OPPONENTS
WESTERN MICHIGAN
WMU is led by senior Maggie King, who helped lead the squad to a 19-win season last year. She finished the season with 420 kills, averaging 3.68 per set. The team returns their starting setter in Logan Case who dished out more than 1,300 assists, along with starting middle Madison Merz. They did lose senior outside hitter Meredith Phillips who hit .244 from the pin, but also return libero Mairead Boyle who had 420 digs last season.

The Mustangs went 1-1 against Power Five competition last season with a sweep loss to Michigan State to start the season and a five-set win against Indiana.

GREEN BAY
GB finished the season with a 15-16 record last year. Alexandra Zakutney returns for the Phoenix after earning First Team All-Horizon honors with 400 kills and 51 aces. The team also added grad transfer Angie Gromos who has a career hitting percentage of .227.

DENVER
Last year Denver finished with a 23-6 record before falling to South Dakota State in the first round of the Summit League Tournament. DU took down USC last season in Los Angeles, to win the Trojan Invitational.

The Pioneers lost three of their top four attackers from last season and one of their starting setters. They do return starting libero Gianna Bartalo who finished the season with 390 digs.

Not available for any of the matches as I type this.

Can't wait to get the season started. Already set the DVR for tomorrow's match as well as one on at the same time which is Texas at Ohio State. If memory servers. Jenna Ewert plays at Texas now.

Note- I was assuming that tomorrow night's match against DU might be the main challenge for the Buffs this weekend, but Western Michigan defeated the Pioneers 3-1 at DU this morning, so the Buffs had better bring the A level intensity when they face the Broncos tonight.

Based on your preview, I was thinking DU lost too much from last year and might struggle. WMU might be pretty good, too.

The announcer had a good point that CU has 3 consistent scorers and to be good in the pac 12 you need 5. Jahara could be one but she was out with a concussion. They need to find one more if Jarhara develops into a scorer. Still worried about the pin hitters but nice win and M. Hart was dominant in this match

Green Bay has just finished with a 3-1 win over DU, so assume the Buff match will now be starting around 7:30.

After a tight set, CU will need to play catch-up. They got up 20-18, but then WMU scored the next 5 and eventually win the 1st set 22-25.

I didn't catch the Green Bay game, but I saw the first set and part of the second set vs WMU...I think I'm a bad luck charm for the Buffs. They were playing horribly when I was watching. I'm glad they were able to pull out a win against the Broncos. There are many great players on this team, but CU has a lot of work to do if they want to beat CSU and be competitive in-conference. Although, the PAC had a few clunkers this weekend already; UCLA lost to Utah State in 4, UW lost at Arkansas, and Kansas beat the Utes in SLC.

Best of luck to the Buffs going forward! Beat DU!!

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team opened the 2022 season by taking down Green Bay (3-0 | 25-10, 26-24, 25-20) and Western Michigan (3-1 | 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-17) here Friday to secure the Buffs Invitational title on just the first day of the tournament.

Sixth-year graduate student Meegan Hart led by the charge for the Buffaloes (2-0), combining for 28 kills and a .577 hitting percentage through the first two matches. She also had seven combined blocks and four digs in the process. In the early match against Green Bay, Hart had 14 kills and a team-high .619 hitting percentage, then followed up with another 14 on .542 hitting in the second match.

Outside hitters Maya Tabron and Lexi Hadrych had strong performances as well offensively. Hadrych put down 13 kills with a .474 hitting percentage in her Buffs debut, while Tabron recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs in the night cap. Hadrych finished with 23 total kills while Tabron had 21 kills and digs. Tabron also had a team-best four combined aces.

The Buffs' offense was led by sophomore Taylor Simpson who split duties with Brynna DeLuzio throughout the matches. Simpson had 27 assists in the first match, averaging nine per set, then raised that to 10 per set against the Broncos with 40 assists. Both matches had equal distribution with four hitters with 19 attacks in the first and four with 21 or more in the second.

On the defensive end, Alexia Kuehl anchored the net with seven blocks against Green Bay and four against WMU. Katie Lougeay started at libero and had 17 digs against Western Michigan, finishing the day with a team-best 23 digs.

The tournament started in the morning with Western Michigan defeating Denver, followed by Green Bay taking down the Pioneers as well. With CU's final opponent having two losses and Colorado defeating the only other teams that could have a 2-1 record, Colorado secured the tournament on the first day. The team will look to finish off the weekend perfect as they face head coach Jesse Mahoney's former team in Denver tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

QUOTES
GREEN BAY
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney

On Today's Match
"It was a good match to get going. I felt like it was a little stop-and-go for us. We played so well in the first set. That's about as clean as a volleyball set you can have. I'd like to not be behind in the second set, but it was a good opportunity to fight back and really dial in and play well. Coming back, I don't know how many points we scored to finish it, five or six or something like that. That's hard to do no matter who you're playing. I was excited about that. We played a decent set in the third to finish it. When you look on the stat sheet, we hit .320. They hit .070 or something like that. You feel like that's a blowout, but that's not how it feels in the match sometimes because we just weren't as consistent as we need to be. We let them off the hook a couple of times. So, I thought there were some bright spots, Meegan hit a quiet .620 or something like that. That's pretty impressive out in the middle position. I thought our two left sides did a nice job, making good choices with the ball. I thought our setting was excellent from both setters. A good way to start the season. We have to get better this weekend progressively and for the rest of the season as well."

WESTERN MICHIGAN
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney

On The Match Against Western Michigan
"I'll tell you, Western Michigan's a really good team and they run a really fast offense, as fast as we're going to see all year. I thought their setter was really, really good. And essentially it just took us a while to catch up to the speed. We did not start to get there until the middle of the second set and then I think once we kind of caught up to the speed and adjusted to what they were doing we were able to separate and pull ahead. And it didn't feel easy, but I thought we scored really well in sets three and four, so it was good. It was a good start. I liked that we were pushed today. I liked that we responded in both matches. And we're going to have to continue to get better."

We need Sterling Parker at full strength. Since that isn't where she is yet, Jesse is right in bringing her along slowly. The last she needs is to re-injure her shoulder.

I was surprised as I watched the match that Brynna wasn't playing more.

Impressed with the player from UCLA.

I was surprised by the losses with other Pac-12 teams. It isn't like Utah State or Arkansas are big time programs. I know Kansas likes to think it is a big time program so they were ready for their match.

I will be disappointed if we don't beat DU in 3.

need to find another pin hitter that can put the ball away. Hope Cambell comes back soon
