The point shaving scandal is a tremendous black eye on the program. Maybe part of the reason it never got going for Grier at USD. Important: Grier was not involved in any way. Grier did recruit Johnny Dee, who is now the school's all time leading scorer, breaking Brandon Johnson's record. A lot of people view that as a major positive, everything the school put out when Dee broke the record had zero mention of BJ. Sad story, BJ was a great player, and from everyone I've talked to, a good guy, but got caught up with the wrong people and made some very poor choices.
Also, should be noted that it's damn difficult to recruit into a program under investigation for point shaving. Grier's biggest career failure seems to have been with the jobs he has accepted after working for Few. Might be why he's attracted to Boyle and the stability of this program. Would be a good place to launch him back to the HC ranks.
