In 1990, Bill McCartney coached the Buffaloes to their only national championship and now wants to return to help revive the struggling program.
    By NATE PETERSON

    Published: November 26, 2010

BOULDER, Colo. — Bill McCartney said he weighed the same, at 70, as he did in 1982, when the University of Colorado hired him to rebuild its sunken football program.

It’s the name that carries more heft now than it did back then. Especially this week, as Colorado prepared to face Nebraska in conference play for the final time. (The No. 15 Cornhuskers defeated the Buffaloes, 45-17, on Friday.)

With his irrepressible will, McCartney once conjured a fierce border rivalry where there hadn’t been one, and in the process, lifted the Buffaloes to national prominence.

It brought him considerable renown, but McCartney, who led Colorado to its only national title 20 years ago, is no longer content to be the focal point of the program’s storied past. He would rather be a part of its future in the revamped Pac-12.

Nice read, if not HC, he needs to be AD or involved in some shape or form.

I don't understand why people keep pushing McCartney into these roles where he can't do what he does best. Recruit and motivate/inspire.

Still my number one choice. Everyone has risk--- nobody loves CU as much or has as much proven success. I want Mac as CUHC

Great man but he is not my top choice. Would it upset me, no. But I think we should go a different direction.

Mac is my no. 1 choice. With the staff he would bring in, I feel he's highest upside and lowest risk choice.

If Mac had EB as his OC and maybe Cabral as his DC, I would be very confident in that decision.

I agree that we need a true "CEO" type leader, but the only guy that fits the mold for Colorado is Coach Mac. Anyone else would be a gamble in that role.

If we don't go with Coach Mac, then we need a lights-out recruiter that can get great X's and O's from his coordinators.

Maybe Coach Mac will get the offer in Meatchicken after RichRod is fired!

Then we can get Harbaugh!

Mac neverput together a bad staff. What makes anyone think EB can handle OC job? Haven't we learned that the OC can't learn on the job? He could learn it from Kiffen sure but Mac needs a guy who's been doing it for real.

Sure, but he corrected that and brought in some great coaches to CU. That's what I admire about Mac, he's always been tested, and he's shown that he can correct his faults and do what's best for the program.

And he knows what it takes to win, he knows the tradition, and he's a great speaker. I'm all for him to be the next HC.

That's my feeling too. Out of the likely group of Mac, EB, Calhoun, or Embree, Mac is without a doubt my top choice. But the staff concerns mentioned in this thread aren't good - who is his rumored staff?

Where would Simmons fit in? He's coached on both sides as an assistant.
