The outdoor NCAA track and field championships will begin tomorrow and run through Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. I'll try to provide some play-by-play throughout the week and updates on the Buffs competing, although I might be late on Wednesday because of class. The Buffs competing are: freshman Ben Saarel and junior Jake Hurysz in the men's 1500 meters, junior Blake Theroux in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase, senior Joe Bosshard in the men's 10,000 meters, senior Shalaya Kipp in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Carrie Verdon in the women's 5000 meters, and senior Emily Hunsucker in the women's hammer throw.

ESPN Networks will cover every day of the meet, with Wednesday and Thursday being broadcast on ESPN3, starting at 3:55 p.m. PT. Events on Friday and Saturday will be broadcast live ESPNU starting at 4:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.

Hunsucker in second after three of six throws. She needs a new PR by about a half meter to get into first place.

Still in second after four. First place moves further ahead and is probably uncatchable. She'd need to outthrow her PR by over a meter to catch her.

Second with one throw to go. First place keeps moving further ahead.

Great start to the event with a second place finish for Emily Hunsucker and the Buffs. She made her last throw her best, but still two meters out of first.

In about 20 minutes, Shalaya Kipp will be competing in the first heat of the steeplechase semifinals, although it looks like it may be a few minutes late. Immediately after is the men's 10,000 meters with Joe Bosshard in the final event of the night.

After the first lap, Kipp is in 2nd. Everyone is still grouped together except the first place girl that's taken an early lead.

3 laps to go and the top 3 are ahead of the pack. Kipp seems to be in no danger of not qualifying for the finals.

Kipp finished in 2nd place in the heat and qualifies for the final tomorrow at 5:35 PST. It looks like she was okay with just qualifying and not really caring about winning the heat.

There is no semifinals for the 10,000 meters, just the finals up now.

I'll try to provide updates for this race, but it's hard to tell where anybody outside of the top 5 is

Looks like we need to recruit some people from Africa to win this race

Looks like there is a group of the top 5 that have a pretty good lead on the rest of the pack where Joe Bosshard is

Yeah. There are people in Africa who come from communities where the ancestors hunted by jogging after an animal until the animal dropped from exhaustion. That kind of background leads to great genetics for distance and a proud heritage that's going to maintain a running culture.

I've heard that some of these kids had to run like 10 or 15 miles just to go to school everyday.

It's crazy how some of them can run for 28 minutes and then the final lap still be able to go what looked like full speed

In about 10 minutes, the Buffs will start the day off with Ben Saarel in heat 1 and Jake Hurysz in heat 2 of the men's 1500 meters.
