My observation #1: We actually have a pretty good football team. I've seen 2 practices, and I have to admit I'm surprised by how strong we look. Much better than I've seen in the past 4-5 years at comparable stages. Guys like Perichak (sp?), Bakhtarki (sp?), and Will Jefferson look like totally different (and legit, above-average) players.
My observation #2: Hawk coached at BSU with kids that were a little under the radar. Many of the players on the CU team are under the radar (in large part because Hawk hasn't been able to recruit particularly well -- according to the scouting gurus -- over the past couple of years). Those kids that we were able to land that were highly touted haven't, by and large, lived up to the hype (although there are several exceptions).
My theory: Hawk is either (i) a pretty good talent evaluator of "middle tier" players, and/or (ii) he prefers, and is better at, coaching kids that weren't highly touted and have a chip on their shoulder. This is a team of kids that maybe weren't 4 or 5 star kids, but they seem to know how to play football.
My prediction: I'm drinking the kool-aid. I think we could grab 8 wins.
