I was just taking a look through the Rivals database, and it looks like the big dog in-state schools in Texas have all pulled in a lot of early verbals.

    Texas: 16
    TAMU: 22

While programs like TCU (11), Texas Tech (7), Baylor (8) and even the next tier of Houston (9), SMU (6), and Rice (3) can be big competition for prospects who want to stay close to home, they're certainly not the in-state juggernauts that the Longhorns and Aggies are.

There's still a ton of uncommitted talent and I'm feeling pretty good about our chances at landing a solid group of guys from Texas for this class.

TCU is starting to close the gap on the Longhorns and the Aggies. They are getting early verbals from players like Devonte Fields that would not have given them the time of day in the past.

Texas is always going to be the top dog, but the Aggies have taken an interesting approach to recruiting this year. Sherman essentially wrote off the 2011 class since it was relatively small and they came out firing with numerous verbals very early on. They also already have verbals from two 2013 prospects. I suppose they have decided they needed to out-gun Texas in early recruiting. Remains to be seen if it will hold up longterm like it has for Texas. One interesting thing about Texas is they are recruiting more nationally with their new staff. Some Texas prep players that would have already had offers and committed on the spot are now having to wait it out. That is going to cause some trickle down effect.

Also, Oklahoma is taking a very small class this year and has expanded their national recruiting scope in recent years anyway. They actually are making serious inroads into So Cal for top prospects.

Figured this was a good time to update this given our recent commitments from Texas.

    Commitments at in-state Texas programs:

    Texas A&M: 22
    Texas: 18
    Texas Tech: 16
    TCU: 13
    Baylor: 12
    Houston: 10
    SMU: 6
    Rice: 6

I wonder how many of the aTm kids and especially the TCU kids would drop their commitments in a flash if Texas offered them. I don't ask about Tech because I sense that few of their guys would even be second choices for Texas but the top of the aTm class and TCU class might be of interest to Texas if other guys don't come through or have issues.

I saw in a TX recruiting mag that CSU crossed the threshold of recruiting more Texas (and Florida) players than from in-state in 2011.

    Texas High, Ft. Collins.

But they can play at a real school as soon as they earn their associates degree, right?

Who cares about stars? All I care about is offer lists.

That's been the focus there. Florida is where that staff has some really good connections, but they've been working hard in Texas too. Fairchild isn't winning, but it seems like the talent level is up and that it's deeper.

I think it puts them at a disadvantage for the RMS, though. When the core of their team is in-state guys that CU passed over, there's a lot more motivation for them. When they don't have much of that, they lose their big emotional advantage in the game.
