Still too early to tell, but I like what I'm seeing out of this staff when it comes to QB recruiting. If you recall, when MM came in, we had something like 7 quarterbacks on scholarship. Class balance was crap, and there was no defined succession. Sefo comes in halfway into his Freshman year and takes over. Since then, it's been a steady, one QB per year recruitment. In 2016, we'll have Sefo (Senior), Aspay (RS Sophomore), Montez (RS Freshman), and Noyer (Freshman).

I, for one, think this is exactly how we *should* be recruiting quarterbacks. We can debate all we want about their general state of qualifications, but in terms of class balance and depth, we're finally in a pretty good spot. Or, I should say, we will be in a pretty good spot in 2016. With Gherke still here in 2015, the situation isn't that bad now, but it could be better.

The balance is good. But QB is your one recruiting opportunity to make that quantum leap as a team. In the college game, if you can get a true dual-threat QB, you can make a significant impact on your W-L record. I'm hopeful that with new facilities to sell, we can land "that guy." Maybe not until 2016?

Yeah. I'm not making any judgments on the overall talent and abilities of the QB's we've recruited. I think that will be revealed over time. I'm merely pointing out the fact that we finally seem to be in a place where we have good QB class balance and depth.

Whatever you think of Sefo, it shows how stabilizing it is to have a returning starter in what will now be back to back years.

Who was CU's last true DT QB? I'm trying to think back through the last 4 coaching regimes and can't think of one. Was it Kordell?

2016 class might be a good opportunity to bring in a JUCO for that junior class. Especially important to do so, imo, if Gehrke tells the coaches he is graduating after this year and won't be coming back as a 5th year senior backup for the '16 season.

Stewart was a threat to run, for sure, but he didn't exactly light it up. He averaged just over 5 yards per carry his junior and senior years.

Sefo burning his redshirt screwed up the order of things, no doubt. Hopefully the QBs behind him get to keep theirs, unless one is so good he can't be kept off the field.

As Sacky states how qualified these guys are is something that time will tell.

What it does show though is that unlike our last two coaching staffs M2 seems to have a plan in place and an idea about how a program runs.

Up till now we have lacked class balance at some other positions but I think that has been a result of him trying to chase his tail and deal with obvious weaknesses in the roster he took over. Hopefully as time goes on we will start to see overall better balance in our recruiting.

Next step is to take a step up and start getting more kids who are in demand by other schools. At least though we are not seeing the massive attrition and attitude problems that highlighted the program prior to M2 getting here.

Montez will be the DT QB we've been wanting. Big arm and has good speed and quick feet for his size. Raw, but tons of potential.

It hopefully gives us enough time to see if Montez can be the DTQB we hope for. Not trying to pass over Apsay or the others, but just a comment on the possibility of a DTQB option.

While the balance is better than it's been in a while, we definitely don't have much information on the quality of depth. Definitely an unknown after Sefo, and potentially a little worrisome (although I'm pleased there is some upside with some of these guys).

That's the same for about 99% of D1 teams, though. It's not ideal, but ti's something nearly every team deals with every year.

I think you do that only if you don't feel confident that one of the younger guys can come in and take over. Figure that by 2016, Aspay will have been in the system two full years. He should be able to provide spot backup duties by the time he's a Redshirt Sophomore. If he can't, he should be "encouraged" to find opportunities elsewhere. That's not saying he will automatically be the starter once Sefo is gone, but a back-up quarterback that can't back-up the starter is as useless as tits on a boar.

You're right. It is the same for pretty much all other teams. If you believe the recruiting services then the odds of success are better for many others, but really they are in the same boat. It's a good argument to try and get Apsay some PT this year if possible.

Hansen was definitely a solid athlete but is he someone you could build an offense around that potentially featured the QB a true running threat, not just scrambling?

Due to coaching incompetency, we will never know.

Hansen would have been excellent in this offense. What could have been...

Not going to say he was a world beater, but with all he went thru and still got a cup of coffee in the league shows what could have been if he could have been developed.

Hansen, but he was badly misused. He would have been the perfect QB for HCMM

Wonder what his stats would have looked like with the sack yardage taken out, I looked and couldn't find it quickly but I remember him taking some deep sacks as he was adjusting to trying read defenses and be a drop back passer.

But regardless of the stats you are correct in that he was a threat, teams had to account for him out of fear of him ripping of a big chunk of yardage with his feet.

Bernard had a problem with the throwing portion of the double threat as I recall.

Yup. For Bernard dual threat meant run left or run right.

This staff has got the best under the radar guy that commits early that would probably get a P5 offer from someone that needs a QB after losing their guy. We aren't good enough to just pluck the best 5-start dual threat guy out there, yet. Montez was solid early on and it appears Noyer is. He also fits in line with the type of guy Montez was. Tall, athletic and doesn't turn over the ball a ton while being able to chuck the ball downfield quite well.

Dual Threat QBs are all the buzz but, other than Mariota and Mariota, the list of top end dual threats that are startin. And Mariota was only offered by Oregon and Memphis, so do we have to look at an offer list every time in deciding if a guy has got it or not?

Not quite that limited, take Dak Prescott for example, had offers from LSU, Northwestern and TCU.

Were they for QB or another position? RGIII had offers from Texas and others, but not as a Qb
