    1. Man, that crowd was great! Students were there early and they were loud as hell. And they were all wearing black. The blackout looked awesome.

    2. Josh Smith is a hell of a talent both at WR and at returning kicks, but he's got to quit fielding balls inside the 10.

    3. Speedy Stewart looks like the real deal. That kid can move! I had no idea he had 166 yards until we were in the car.

    4. Traffic on the way home SUCKED. WTF? We hung out at our tailgate for an hour or so after the game to let traffic subside and it was still like rush hour getting out of Boulder.

    5. I'm really glad to see the Buffs pull out a tough win against a team with a lot of talent. I know they lost their coach and some big players, but this was still a ranked team that beat up on OU in the Fiesta Bowl last year.

Ahoy, in honor o' talk like a pirate day, har's my re'iew in pirate-speak.

I felt like we could have beat Wvu by 14 easy. Gar.

Arrr, defense was excellent. Aye.. Arrr, i don't think we got any sacks, but since Pat White takes off the second he doesn't like the play, I'm okay with this. Gar, Where can I find a bottle o'rum?

Arrr, both runnin' backs played well, especially Speedy, Arrr, but both blew blockin' assignments on blitz pickups.

The saddest thing I saw all night:

Devine flattened Lucas with an upright block. Destroyed him. I felt bad for Mo, but what can you say?

I thought the victory showed a lot of character, BUT...

We didn't fare any better, statistically than 'Nova (I don't think--I'll look it up when I have more time), points aside. I'm hoping we got a better West Virginia effort than Villanova did, however. ECU too.

    GO BUFFS!

<disclaimer> I am far from a technician, just a fan with some ill-informed observations <disclaimer>

Does it seem to anyone else like Cody telegraphs his passes way too much? It sure looked like their safeties watched our little QB and knew where he was passing it well before he got it out of his hands.

My guess (only a guess, please see disclaimer above) is that is one of the reasons we saw so few passes later in the game.

I am a Hawkins homer (Big H and Little) but this trend has me worried.

    aaaaaaand let the flames begin

I think it is fair to say that Cody has a bit of a sophomore slump going.

I don't think it is so much that he telegraphs his passes. He knows the route the receivers are running and he looks for a receiver to get open so he can throw the ball. For much of this season he has not had time to look from one receiver to the next, nor has he had the time to look off a safety or anything.

As the offensive line and running game improve, I expect Cody will improve too.

On the interception last night, and the one against EWU, he definitely locked on the WR and threw balls he shouldn't throw.

Sorry to not be more clear:

    1. Both Villanova and ECU moved the ball better against WVU's defense than CU.

    2. Both Villanova and ECU's defense held WVU's offense to lower (or equal) production than CU's.

So in the yardage department, CU was outperformed by WVU's previous opponents.

It's been said that total yards indicate the talent of a team, total points are indicative of a team's heart. I like our heart.

That's a BS statistical claim....that's now how football works because teams match up differently, come out and play harder etc. in every game....if anything, the stats that irked me were the 2 turnovers after long drives where at the very least we get a FG

Concur. Teams match up differently and game plans differ. Play selection is situational. When you start comparing a team's performance against a variety of opponents it's akin to apples and oranges, but can still be used to note trends. I found the stats interesting.

Thanks for clarifying... I was confused too...
My thoughts on those early season compares. Team "usually" improve as the season goes on so you would expect better results in week 3 than week 1 or 2. To much emphasis on how bad WVU played and not enough on how well CU improved from the the EWU game.

So would have been happier if we outgained 'Nova and ECU but lost by 30?

    - Fully agree on the Smith and Speedy remarks. I'll add that I'm also amazed at his toughness, he took a beating on 28 carries but it didn't seem to faze him much.

    - WV is nowhere near the same team they were last year. I know White's never been a great passer, but I still can't believe how little they threw the ball. Having said that, it was still a ranked team with a high national perception that we beat.

    - All the 3rd down passes that were thrown short of the first-down marker were very frustrating to watch.

    - I liked seeing the I-formation. Hopefully CU will keep using it and I think it'll definitely become more effective as DS gets going and the OL starts coming around more.

The fan experience last night was electric. I have but one piece of constructive critism.

The #1 thing the athletic department can do to get fans in their seats earlier is to improve the thru put at the gates. We stood in line from 6 to 6:35 at the east side of the stadium, by the gold lot. Only 2 employees with scaners were deployed at that gate, causing backup.

Get more hands on deck at the admission gate so that fans who do try to get into the stadium early enough to see Ralphie run aren't stymied. This wasn't a fan problem. This was a stadium operation problem that can and should be easily corrected.

Mercifully the half hour queue to get in didn't keep me from seeing Hawkin's TD throw to J-Fly, but the folks behind me in line weren't so lucky.

RE: WVU fans. I had pleasant interactions with all the WVU fans I ran into (and several were out and around tailgating, which was surprising to see - we don't usually get many visiting fans tailgating in our lot), with the notable exception of two turds sitting in Sec 107 around row 20-25. They were some of the most obnoxious visiting fans I've ever seen. Every time WVU scored or had a big play, they would stand up, turn around and taunt the entire section. They're lucky they were sitting on the west side. Doing that over near the student section would likely start a fight.

Especially with WVU, it's hard to make this comparison. Against 'nova, they went all out pass to try and prove they could be a real spread passing team. They walked into ECU with the same game plan and got bitch slapped. In the week and a half since that game they went back to their bread and butter. They have the players to run very well and CU did a good job of stopping them. Especially on 3rd and 4th downs.

Had WVU come in with the same game plan they had the first two weeks, they would have had much less production.

An open post to the Allbuffer who left this anonymous negative rep in my box, "disagrre with comment. look up before u say something" regarding my post quoted above:

    Dear Dooooosh,

You may "disagrre" with my post, but it remains factually accurate.

-Both Villanova (399 yards) and East Carolina (386 yards) moved the ball better against West Virginia than CU (366 yards).

-Villanova additionally held West Virginia to the exact same yardage (354) as CU. ECU's defense held West Virginia's talented offense to a paltry 251 yards!

You may disagree with the relevance of those statistics--that is certainly debatable--but the facts support my assertion. I made my statement based on previous research (I get a little obsessive in the week leading up to a game) and couldn't substantiate,at that moment, due to a fussy baby on my lap. I therefore qualified the statement.

I find it hypocritical that you would negative rep me for not looking something up and then prove yourself unfamiliar with the facts, yourself. May I submit to you, that YOU should look something up before you say something.

Furthermore, disagreements are best aired in the public forum. You see, that's how it works. I say something, you disagree and then we banter. In fact, I would suggest that is the very purpose of the forum.

Finally, sign your negative rep, *****. I'm not going to beat you up...I can't, it's the internet!

In summary, I think you are a hypocrite, an idot and a *****. That is all.

    Sincerely,

    The Walrus

Cody damn well needs to know how to get rid of the damn ball when the pocket collapses. He instinctively tries to scramble out and make plays, its going to get him killed or the fumbles will continue.

the physics of the block caused it to look like fireworks. if the preceeding motion was not exactly right, it would not have looked as spectacular. that was a wollop.

Yeah, that. The WVU fans around our tailgate were friendly and inviting. "When you come to Morgantown, bring your own beer and we'll take care of the rest."

I do look forward to a Morgantown road trip in 2009. I've been advised by the locals that hotel space in Mo'town is at a premium. So book early if you want to be close to the action. Be prepaired to spend north of $150/night. It's a toss-up whether Pittsburg or Washington Dulles is the better airport. Pittsburg is closer, but it's still a hike. It all depends on fare, # of stops, availability, who you know in the area...

Won't Noel Devine be the only returning starter for their offense next year? If not, pretty close? I think I remember hearing that their O-Line is full of seniors and White is a Senior.

It could be the Noel Devine show next year, assuming he doesn't go pro after this year. That would be a blessing for us. He's incredible.

Just to add to that thought: I really like the fact that we schedule games like this. It's not often that we get to see the big teams from out East.

I agree. The only other time the teams would play would be in a bowl game, which is off campus.

OOC games provide a great opportunity to visit other college campuses.

I know the conventional wisdom is for teams to schedule one regional game, two cupcakes, and a marquee BCS matchup. Other programs go for 8 home games against home & done opponents. Either formula limits the roaming fan like a shock-collar.

Unless your name is Herbstreet or Corso, you might not get many opportunities to see the campuses where the ESPN GameDay crew frequents.
With the glaring exception of the decission to bump LSU for Fresno State, I like how CU schedules.
