BOULDER—As the alpine teams of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association ascent on the tiny mountain town of Nederland to kick off the 2013 season at the University of Colorado Spencer James Nelson Memorial Invitational at the Eldora Ski Resort, the Nordic squads are wrapping up their pre-college season racing schedule.

Senior Joanne Reid concluded her such schedule in fashion by winning a race. She won the Sierra Nordic Duathlon, a 10-kilometer race featuring both freestyle and classical disciplines in one race. She turned in the best time of the day by more than a minute, male or female, regardless of age, finishing in a time of 30:32. Second place was Andrew Cobourn, who clocked 31:52.

Reid had the best female time by six-and-a-half minutes, topping Beth Thomas’ time of 37:04.

Meanwhile at the U.S. Cross Country National Championships, senior Eliska Hajkova brought home ninth place in the 10-kilometer freestyle race in a time of 30:14.9, just about a minute behind the race winner.

Former Buff Matt Gelso is having an impressive week, taking fourth in the 30-kilometer classical race in a time of 1:26:15.7, just 11.7 seconds behind the winner. Gelso also finished third in the 15-kilometer freestyle race in a time of 37:18.3, just 15.6 seconds behind the winner.

Freshman Charlie Von Thaden won the Finals B bracket for the junior classical sprint while Matt Gelso finished second in the Finals B heat for the classical sprint.
