Madeline Sheils next head coach

"
BOULDER — Current University of Colorado associate head women's golf coach Madeleine Sheils will assume head coaching duties beginning with the 2024-25 season, Buffaloes athletic director Rick George announced on Monday.

Sheils, in her second season, will become the third full-time head coach in program history replacing Anne Kelly who announced on Oct. 15 that she will retire at the end of this season following a storied 27-year coaching career at Colorado.

"I am very grateful to be named the next CU head women's golf coach, Sheils said. "First, I express my heartfelt gratitude to Anne Kelly. She brought me to Boulder last summer and has been a wonderful mentor and friend ever since. Her kindness, patience, and humor are the foundations of Colorado women's golf, and I have big shoes to fill as I follow a coach who has positively influenced so many lives."

Sheils has made an impact on the program in just a year-and-one-half. She helped the Buffaloes usher in a solid recruiting class this last year highlighted by former All-Big 12 Conference golfer in graduate transfer Sabrina Iqbal from TCU and junior college All-American Maria Eidhagen Harrough in addition to three promising freshmen.

Those additions along with proven experienced returnees in Morgan Miller, Hailey Schalk and Lauren Waxer-Gooding are already paying off for the Buffaloes. Through four fall events, Colorado has improved its stroke average by more than three shots off last year's pace and over two shots compared to this time last year.

"I would like to thank Rick George for this opportunity," Sheils said. "I could not be more proud to represent the University of Colorado. My amazing colleagues within the athletic department support our student-athletes with such heart, and the first-class CU education and beautiful Boulder setting make being a Buff a privilege. I look forward to building upon Coach Kelly's legacy and chasing championships with this team for many years to come."

Prior to joining Colorado, Sheils teed off her collegiate coaching career with three successful seasons as an assistant coach at Stanford (2019-22). Sheils helped Stanford to the 2022 national championship, its second in program history and assisted the Cardinal to NCAA Finals appearances in both of her seasons a championship was completed (2019-20 was canceled due to COVID).

During Sheils' three seasons on The Farm, Stanford won 11 stroke-play events and Stanford players captured 13 individual titles. Sheils coached five WGCA All-Americans, two back-to-back NCAA Players of the Year and NCAA Individual Champions, two World #1 Ranked Amateur Golfers, 10 Augusta National Women's Amateur invitees, and five Arnold Palmer Cup Participants.

A professional golfer on the LPGA and Epson, previously known as Symetra, Tours, Sheils retired following the 2018 season. She played on the LPGA Tour in 2017 and 2018, teeing it up in 24 total events. During her four seasons on the Epson Tour (2013-2016), Sheils earned one victory at the 2015 FireKeeper's Casino Hotel Championship in Battle Creek, Mich. and seven top-10 finishes.

"I'm so happy that Rick George and the University of Colorado are giving Madeline Sheils the opportunity to become head women's golf coach next season. She is one of the up-and-coming coaching stars in women's golf. She knows the game, loves Colorado, cares about developing our players not only as golfers but successful confident women! Maddie is very hard working, intelligent and competitive! CU women's golf will be very fortunate to have Maddie lead this team the Big 12 and future. I feel extremely confident handing this program over to Coach Sheils." – Anne Kelly, current Colorado head women's golf coach

"We are excited to have coach Maddie Sheils take over our women's golf program next season. She is a winner in every sense of the word and understands what it takes to compete on a national level. With the experience she's gained the last two years alongside Anne Kelly, there's no question Maddie is a perfect fit for what we're trying to accomplish, which is competing for championships at the University of Colorado." – Rick George, Colorado director of athletics

"In just over a year, Maddie has added a burst of energy and excitement to the women's golf program. She has meshed well with coach Anne Kelly and has built a solid rapport with our current student-athletes and also on the recruiting trail. Maddie is ready for this challenge and I look forward to watching her guide this program into a new era." – Jill Keegan, Colorado senior associate athletic director/SWA

"I am super excited to have Maddie as our head coach. Although I am sad to see Anne leave, Maddie has brought so much knowledge from Stanford and will be a great fit for our program. Really excited for the program going forward." Morgan Miller, Colorado sophomore golfer

"Colorado is hiring the best, up and coming head coach in the country. Maddie is relentless in her pursuit of excellence, and she is a first-class person, leader, and coach. She will take the CU program to new heights, no question." – Anne Walker, Stanford's Margot & Mitch Milias director of women's golf (head coach)

"The thing I remember most about Maddie was her competitive fire, her hard work, and her meticulousness on and off the golf course. I believe all the traits that made her a great student and athlete will make her an outstanding head coach. She is ready to take that next step, and I'm excited to see her having an opportunity to showcase her talents at a great program like Colorado." - Robin Krapfl, former Nebraska head women's golf coach (1987-2019, 32 seasons)

Congrats and best wishes to Ms. Sheils!

(NEVER hurts in ANY Olympic sport (at least I can think of) to have some Stanford pedigree.)
