    The season is not over.

Based on his 4 year performance as Head Coach, should Dan Hawkins return next season as our Head Coach?

If the decision were up to me I'd fire Dan Hawkins and begin a nationwide search.

I'm unsure. So much could still happen. We could still qualify for a bowl game. Heck, we could still win a Big 12 Championship. Then there's recruiting. What if one or more 5* guys like Chris Martin choose CU in the next few weeks because of the relationship built with Hawkins?

We've always said there are a lot of good things going on in the program and that Hawkins just needs to win. I still believe he has (and should have) an opportunity to save his job.

How do we deal with the buyout on Hawks contract? What was it..? About $3 million?

    Not sure.

If the buyout is that large we might just be screwed and have to deal with a few more years of Hawk.

If the school can make a gustsy move and eat the buyout, we may be looking at a young assistant to replace Hawk rather than a big name candidate.

I'll once again mention young assistants like Rocky Seto, Jeremy Bates, or Cale Gundy.

CU can't afford to get rid of Hawk until after next season, either financially or strategically.

For CU to pay out 6+ million over 4 years to fire head coaches is simply untenable--especially for an AD run on a shoestring budget.

Strategically, one must realize that CU isn't a plum coaching job. Hawk makes a salary near the bottom of the big XII, as do the assistants. It's difficult hiring and keeping assistants who can only sign one year contracts. It is therefore necessary for CU to treat it's coaches more than fairly, and that means a head coach gets five years to "win." That way any new hire knows he won't be out on his ass after three or four years and CU increases it's pool of hires.

There you go. Here's to hoping for a better season next year.

I voted under the unsure category because the season isn't over yet. Barring a turnaround of the current state though, I'll say he should go.

I wanted and still want the guy to succeed here. But honestly, it's just not getting it done with 2 road wins in nearly 4 years. Between that, the constant excuses, the inability to hold assistant coaches accountable, appearances of a team that up to this past week appeared to have quit on him, his constant shots at the fans, I think his time is up. However, I'll give him the rest of the season to prove me wrong and get me back in his camp for next year (though my expectations will get higher and my understanding of missing those expectations will go down if he's here next year).

I have not been happy with what has happened this season. That being said, if the Buffs win out it would mean two quality wins (sorry Iowa State, I'm just not ready to call you a quality football team) over a good team (kNU) and a really good team (Okie Lite). That would also put us at 6 wins and bowl eligible. After the disastrous play early in the year, I would not have bet a dime on our chances to win any games. Obviously, Hansen is coming on and some of recievers as well as our front 7 and safeties are really starting to play. If we can put something together, it might make sense both financially and in the interest of continuity to see if Hawk can build on this. He would be getting his whole team back next year. Let's see what happens the rest of the year. GO BUFFS!!!!!

I still haven't completely made up my mind. Had the Buffs laid down v. aTm, I'm pretty sure I would be saying let's go coach shopping.

Beat ISU and win out and I'd vote for another year. Lose to ISU, I'd say time for a change.

Beat ISU. lose a close game to Okie St. or NU and beat the other, it would be a close call for me.

No matter what, I'll never feel terribly confident with DH at the helm.

Aw for Pete's sake. We beat aTm by the skin of our teeth, and everyone's back on the bandwagon? His coaching smells. When something smells that bad, you throw it out.

Starting to seriously wonder if some of the posters here suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. :shot:

I was addressing the ~30% of posters who voted yes/unsure. Like the abused wife who just won't leave Jethro, cuz he looks good in his wife-beater T-shirt. Mixed metaphor, but oh well.

    How did you vote, DBT?

I voted no because I've already seen enough and if we were to finish the season strong that wouldn't suddenly make him a good coach in my mind.

I'm no Hawk hater, he's done good things here. But it is time for a fresh approach. Keep Cabral and Brown let the rest go and start anew.

I'm so torn on this. Really am. On the one hand, the team has regressed the last couple of years. On the other, like I posted a couple of months ago, GB's last two recruiting classes were bad, Hawkins couldn't recruit much his first year, and of his recruits, there are only 3 seniors and 9 juniors. All the rest are freshmen and sophpmores. And **** you if you want to pontificate about that being an "excuse."

But then, Hawkins has been consistently out coached on game day. But I can't believe that his success before CU is an aboration. I also give a lot of credence to him not getting the assistants he expected to bring in when he was hired and that he had to scramble to pull a staff together.

I'll tell you a story about Mac in that regard. Early on, when he was struggling, I asked a friend who played for CU and the Packers, about CU. He said, "Mac does not have a very good coaching staff." Well, Mac slowly brought in one great coach after another and that was a big factor in CU's turnaround, IMO.

So, I mixed all of that together and voted that he should get one more year. I don't really want to start over. But if that is what the AD decides, so be it.

I really don't think he's going to get us over the hump and I thought he was likable until this year, but I don't have to like him if he gets results. He hasn't done that yet, but I believe that a guy should get 5 years unless he doesn't show progress, so if he wins out I okay with giving him his 5th year. I give that almost no chance of happening, and would not be upset if he was let go anyway.

To answer Buffnik, we should definitely not base this decision on potential recruits.

no. while i do hope the season ends well with a string of wins, i have seen enough.

    1. the utter failure to have the team properly prepared to start the season. csu is not at good team. toledo is not at good team. that was completely un-sat coming into the 4th year.

    2. total inconsistancy. its not just a pattern under hawk, its a pandemic. its everywhere. one can look at micro situations such as the o-line play over the years. they have had good qrtrs. never/rarely(?) a complete game, let alone a string games. or look macro and see the team play 4 qrtrs consistantly game after game.

    3. complete lack of judgement in not playing the best players, imo. its like my brother said (he swam in college)... "yea, i worked harder than guys with better ability/skills but, i still got my ass kicked at every meet because they were better atheletes than i was."

-3a. complete lack of judgement in not sticking with decisions. burn the RS twice of TH only to limit him gaining experience that will benifit the program down the road. where would CU be if TH had played out the season last year? who knows.....

    4. cant win on the road. its not like a ton of the teams have been top 10 bcs teams.

enough.... i will make the rest of this quick.....

attitude towards fans, media and those that are critical of a .33% or so, winning coach.

basically it boils down to this. even if they do win out... we have been down this road before. 3-0 to start last year only to see the wheels fall off. big win followed by collapse. cant win on the road. double talk. inconsistancies in player status/why they play/not play ect.

    its just been enough.

oh, and i want to add.....

development of talent. seriously? every single one of the o-line recruits was really that over rated? really? every single one?

    :dbt: thats better....

We need to re-run the poll after the ISU game. Be interesting how a win or loss affects things.
