    SIMAS SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY
BOULDER — University of Colorado junior wide receiver Markques Simas has been suspended indefinitely from the football team, school officials announced Wednesday.

Head coach Dan Hawkins said, “Markques must rectify several matters. If he were to successfully complete a list of several issues, including processes by both the legal system and CU Office of Judicial Affairs, there is a slim possibility he could rejoin the team as a walk-on in the fall.”

Simas, who is out of Mira Mesa High School in San Diego, was CU’s second leading receiver in 2009, as he caught 43 passes for 585 yards and three touchdowns. After a slow start, the 6-2, 215-pounder caught fire near the end of the season, with 31 receptions for 463 yards in the final four games of the season, setting a school record for the most catches over a four-game span in CU history. His 13.6 average per reception was also a team best last fall.

    ****************

    Sounds like it's over.

I think all we can do is hope for the best but not expect to see Simas in a Buffs uni (or earning a CU degree).

Hawk had no choice. Perhaps he should have watched him more closely or not, he had no choice but to let him go from the team.

Simas had all of the makings of one hell of a receiver, but his off-the-field issues finally caught up to him. Hopefully he regroups and can get a degree somewhere so things don't even end up more tragic, imo. It's sad to see someone that has so much potential and opportunity piss it away. There are so many people that would kill to have his ability, unfortunately, he didn't seem to appreciate it himself.

Sucks for all of us who loved to watch him play, and saw the talent that he had. Without any further details, I choose to believe that this is his responsibility and he's the one who has to live with the choices he made. Best of luck, Markques. Here's hoping you stick with it and find your way back on the field as a Buff and fulfill all the potential you have! If not, then best of luck with that, too.

What is Hawkins thinking? There has to be a good explanation for Simas! :wink2:

No surprise here. Simas seams to take two steps backwards before he takes any steps forward. I don't see him fullfilling any of Talkins pre-conditions for being a walk-on. He will be missed.

I agree. I have to say, I don't believe in a stict "three strikes" policy. So, in that sense, I'm glad to see Hawkins leave the door ajar, even if its just a crack.

Can't blame Hawk here, he had to make this call. Sucks for football, but I think it was the correct thing to do. I hope Simas can pull it together and salvage his education, and then his football career.

I'd still like to know why the hell he missed his court date. I have an idea though. Sad. The kid needs help.

    Hawk's fault right?

C'mon Slider. No need to stir the pot. Nobody has blamed Hawk for anything in this thread. Only lamentations for the loss of a tremendous talent (with glancing recognition at a trend which actually precedes Hawk's tenure).

Can we just keep it that way?

The not-so-subtle message here is that not only is he suspended, but he's lost his scholarship. I don't think Hawk had much of a choice in the matter, although I still think he should have done more to keep an eye on a kid who obviously needed it. Like DBT says, the kid needs help. Unfortunately, you have to want to help yourself before somebody else can help you.

I don't think that Simas has some overwhelming alcohol problem that is preventing him from studying, making court dates, or caring about his grades/scholarship. I think we're just looking at a kid who has his head in the clouds and is accustomed to getting chance after chance. I do think we'll see him as a Buff again, but I can't think of a dumber Buff - ever.

Unfortunately, this takes a lot of the optimism out of me. Simas was our best offensive player at a position that DESPERATELY needed a playmaker. People wonder why we threw the ball all over the lot late in the year? Defenses stacked the box early and often against CU and dared them to beat them with man-coverage. Our WR's were NOT up to that challenge. We hoped Simmons would somehow fill it, or a freshmen who was recruited in August.... We were ridiculously thin at that position. Josh Smith and Kendrick leaving us really put this roster in a bad way. Hello part II.

Our running game was completely ineffective with 8 men in the box and LB's not having to even think pass-pro. It wasn't fair. Our QBs faced an all out blitz on just about every play. The only way to beat that is with quick strike passes to receivers who can shed the jam and get some seperation. Simas proved he could do that late in the year.

Although I expect the rest of the cast to be improved and hope Toney Clemons is a fraction of what some have hyped him to be, this is a very serious loss. If Prince can somehow get Simmons, WillJeff, Celestine, and Cefalo to pick up the slack.... That's going to be a tall order. And I guess there's some chance that Simas makes it back, but given his track record that got him here, that would NOT be something I'd bet on.

    This.

I do not blame Hawk one bit for Simas' actions. He's a man. He needs to learn how to act like one.

That's what I took from the statement. Doesn't the loss of the scholarship mean that he is effectively kicked off of the team?

I believe Hawk said he could walk on in the fall if he took care of things. So, it sounds like he lost his schollie and is not a member of the team.

Looking at this stuff actually makes what Celestine is doing more impressive. Here is a kid who couldn't handle his life and college at the same time and left. Instead of becoming another one of those "Whatever happened to?" guys he got his stuff together, worked his butt off, did some serious growing up, made the choices that may not have been the easiest but were the most mature and got himself back at the task of playing football and more importantly getting an education.

We get upset, and rightly so, by guys like Simas who have all the opportunity in the world and piss it away. We should not forget the guys who face up to life and make positive things happen. I hope that Celestine steps up on the field and has a great legacy here when he leaves as a player. If he doesn't I will still respect him greatly for dealing with life and making it work for him and his future.

Whether Celestine ever makes on impact on the football field or not, he's made good hard decisions and should end up with a CU degree. A great story that would be made epic by him having success on the field.
