Three football players punished
Athletes suspended from team over allegations of brawling

Saturday, August 4, 2007
Three University of Colorado football players have been suspended from the team because of allegations of brawling, said sports information director Dave Plati.
Michael Sipili, 19, a sophomore inside linebacker from Hawaii who started in two games last season, has been indefinitely suspended from the team after his arrest this week in connection with a June fight, Plati said Friday.
Chris Perri, 20, a sophomore defensive tackle, has been suspended for the first three games of the season after his alleged role in the same June brawl as well as a July arrest after police said he fought with another CU football player, Taj Kaynor.
Kaynor, a 21-year-old defensive tackle, has been suspended for one game.
Sipili was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree assault and criminal mischief. He is out of jail on bond.
He is accused of tackling and punching 22-year-old CU student John Antrim numerous times in the early hours of June 16 after Antrim attempted to help friend James Terry, who was brawling with Sipili’s friend Perri, according to a police report.
Antrim suffered three facial fractures that required surgery in late June, the report said. He said he’s seeking the advice of a lawyer and wouldn’t comment.
Sipili and his attorney, Lou Rubino, could not be reached for comment Friday.
The investigation took nearly seven weeks because Boulder police had to conduct numerous interviews, the report said.
A female friend who was with Antrim on June 16 said Sipili was “not the first to throw a punch, but definitely not the last,” the report said.
According to the report, Antrim was walking home from Cosmo’s Pizza with Terry and three female friends near 11th about 12:45 a.m. when they passed a group of males, the report said.
One of the women confronted Perri after he said something that offended her, she told police.
That led to the confrontation between Perri and Terry, police said.
Perri did not return a phone message left by the Camera.
Sipili earned honorable mention Freshman All-America honors by The Sporting News last season, and he would have entered the fall as the top middle inside linebacker, according to the CU athletic Web site.
Our kids have to be taught to just walk away. I don't disagree with a suspension. But the kid doesnt deserve to be kicked out or lose an entire year.
How badly was the victim hurt?
3 facial fractures and surgery --- sounds like he was hurt pretty bad.
well... a severe punishment is deserved..... what goes through a kids mind?
we cant have this... we just cant.
Look the players deserve punishment, but this entire thing looks like bull****. Sure, they needed to walk away from idiots trying to fight them, but the other two guys are definitely at fault too. One thing I can't stand at bars is watching a bunch of spoiled, arrogant pieces of **** that think they're so ****ing tough. They get into all these stupid push fights, and have to be taken out of the bars...
...I bet the two guys that were fighting Perri and Sipili were assholes. Apparently Perri offended one of the girls with a comment, but that **** happens all the time - not to excuse it. But from a guy's perspective, know your ****ing place and stop being full of idiotic pride. Perri started ****, these guys escalated it, and Sipili ended it.
All parties are at fault here. Not just the football players, and it's annoying that only the football players are going to get cast in a bad light by the media. Punishment seems warranted and it seems that Hawk is on top of it - but what about the douches that actually thought they could fight Perri and Sipili? They're talking to a ****ing lawyer??...they fought and are at blame too!

Every championship team overcomes some form of diversity.
Where have I heard that before? Is that an Adolph Rupp quote??
I believe you may have meant to say "some form of adversity"???
One thing that I don't understand. Sipili is suspended indefinitely, but the woman of the other party stated that he didn't throw the first or last punch. In fact, the article states he went into the fight after a second guy apparently started fighting with Perri...which I'm sure all, or at least most, of us guys would do (help a friend fighting two other guys).
Fights suck - especially when it starts over a girl...and drinking is way more fun without violence. However, fights happen - that's just a fact of life, and if you get your ass beat, you get your ass beat. That's one important reason why sometimes, you don't fight 6-2 270lb guys unless you REALLY know your **** AND there's a really important and noble reason for doing so. Why is this guy is talking to a lawyer? Everyone was probably drunk and not in the best state of mind...and he's thinking of suing or pressing charges? He's at fault too.
Sackman and someone else made a good point that yes, our football team does have a target on their back, so yeah - they do have to be extra careful and man up by walking away. That still does not excuse the other parties involved in my opinion. Hawk should suspend as he sees fit, but I really hope this guy doesn't end up taking Perri and Sipili to court...he helped start the fight and he got his ass handed to him - that's one of the potential consequences of fighting...
Dammit, dammit, dammit. First Gates doesn't qualify yet and now this.
I trust Hawk will do the right thing. It's not fair, and it's not easy, but these kids have got to learn to walk away from situations like that. Especially in Boulder where they are under a microscope.
It hurts, but if Sipili is gone for the year, so be it. You can't beat up a guy like that and have no consequences.
