Special Teams- Future

My point about speed was that it can take players out of a play just as quickly as it could put them in position to make a play. Improved recruiting and team speed just won't help without the concerted coaching effort. Given the number of top line players that were playing special teams by years end, I think it is fair to say that better recruits won't make much of an impact without the coaches putting a ton of focus on special teams.

So there's just as much bad as good with being faster?

And just about every single issue was due to our kicker/punter being too slow or kicking too low.
Dropped punts and blown assignments as well. The staff needs someone good dedicated to this for Mac to hold accountable.

Yes, without proper coaching fast comes with many problems on special teams. Kind of like having an insanely fast safety who consistently sprints to one side of the field leaving a massive gap everywhere else. Speed with good coaching is much better than slow with good coaching, but slow with good coaching is better than speed with bad coaching.

Mac is accountable. STs is team coached. He's in charge of the coaches & overall special teams practice organization.

So you think it's easier to coach slow guys?

What I'm getting at is that I'm only looking at a single variable. Speed. All things being equal, it's better if you're faster.

Now, if we want to introduce other variables, then there may be some things that are more important than speed. At least to a point. I mean, if everyone on the roster ran like I do these days then no coaching in the world is going to avoid getting destroyed on special teams.

I see we've another allbuffer who ran a 4.3 40 in high school. :D

Haha. I was in the 4.8-4.9 range back in the day. So these days I think that means that Tom Brady would outrun me. :ROFLMAO:
Pretty good. However, I was so fast, no one ever deemed it necessary to time me.

From time to time I ponder the fact it's likely most DTs and OLs in the NFL are faster than I ever was. I reassure myself with my superior cornering speed in the thoughts of what would happen in a chase.

4.8, 4.9? Damn, pick em and put them down homie. What do think you'd run now? Age sucks, I don't wanna know what I'd run these days lol. I'd be embarrassed most likely.

You would have beaten me badly. I know it isn't a direct correlation, but my best 100 yard time (13.0...) converted to a 40 would be a 5.2.

I always joked I don't have a single fast twitch muscle fiber in my body - 100% slow twitch.

Ditto, having relatively short legs with knock knees didn't help me either. I might have hit 5.2 on a good day.

Mark Schlereth has said that he was a KO coverage guy his rookie year at 280 lbs and ran a 4.7. That is flying for a guy that size.

Any word on Diego? I'd think if he's healthy, he's the kicker with Price as KO specialist.

He walked on Senior Night, so I am assuming he is gone. If they don't walk out they night it doesn't mean they are staying, but if they do it pretty much means they are leaving.

Dumb question that I feel like I should know the answer to: any chance Diego can kick in the bowl game? I'm thinking definitely not, but then I go well, maybe it'd be possible?
