These things always take me back to my favorite moment of the John Blake era at the University of Oklahoma.
In 1997, during John Blake's last season as OU's head coach, he hired the best man at his wedding (seriously) Joe Dickinson, to be his offensive coordinator. After spending the entire spring and fall practicing an option offense, when the season finally opened, OU did not come out with an option offense at all, instead they were more of a pro-set offense...
For all the years prior to the Stoops regime, OU's head coach and both the offensive and defensive coordinator had radio shows, where the coaches would be on the air for an hour, at some local Norman restaurant, and would accept calls from people which were then broadcast over the air. Joe Dickinson's show was broadcast in the evenings at a local bar and grill called the Trattoria.
On one fateful night, nearing the end of the season, when most people were pretty sure that John Blake was going to be terminated, a wonderful caller called in to Joe Dickinson's show...
Host: "Welcome caller, you're on the air with offensive coordinator Joe Dickinson."
Caller: "Thank you, I have just three quick questions for Coach D. Number 1, what the hell kind of mickey mouse offense are you running? Number 2, how much are they paying you to run that crap? Number 3, where will you be coaching next year? I'll hang up and listen off the air."
Coach Dickinson: "Hey buddy, if you think you can do any better than me, you're welcome to come down here to the Trattoria and find out!"
Host: "And it's time for a commercial break."
