Should it have been part of the BCS?

As a kid, back when there were 15 or so bowls, the Cotton bowl always seemed to be one of the bigger games. I can remember watching it, the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl. Granted it was Florida but I have no recollection of the Fiesta Bowl.

Fiesta was a later addition to accommodate the rising powers of FSU and Miami as Independents....and give Notre Dame more play. i would say, 85% of the time, the Cotton Bowl was 4th on the pecking list of the old New Year's Day Bowls.....after (no order) the Orange, Sugar and Rose. Fiesta was a late comer but I would rank it above the Cotton most years in terms of national championship significance.

I do think the Big XII region should be able to host a BCS game since the "potential home field advantages" at sites like New Orleans, Miami, LA....have been factors at times. LSU has won 2 NC's in the 2000's.....both games were in the Sugar Dome.

edit: though giving the Texas/South factions and the Cotton Bowl "more" prestige is a bit annoying. i'm already sick of watching games in JerryWorld.

Is it just me or does it look like Zac Robinson is deliberately throwing this game?

If I was Gundy I might bench him for a couple series because he looks like he is totally out of today's game.

that's kind of how he looked against OU, to me. i assumed he still wasn't 100%....but, yeah, he looks pretty average at best so far. out on sync in a big way.

The Cotton Bowl is one of the classic bowl games and one of the original Big 4. Also, Texas definitely should have one of the BCS bowls. Finally, with the new stadium, its a no brainer. Who the hell wants all the BCS bowls in Cal, Fla, and AZ? I say that, because if you don't want the Cotton Bowl, then you should also get rid of the effing Sugar Bowl. That leaves Cal, Fla, and AZ.

Not if it adds another BCS bowl with the current system in place. I know, money and everything would dictate that that's the next move they make. I'd prefer to see it added only if they could then go back to the rotation of BCS National Championship games, then move it east to west: Rose, Fiesta, Cotton, Sugar, Orange. It's too damn confusing and probably a little unfair for local commerce that the Rose Bowl can get two BCS games. And confusing, for that matter.

And to the point about warm weather, last year I ate **** on a patch of ice outside my hotel in Surprise, AZ the day before the Fiesta Bowl. The benefit for the game's sake? Indoor stadium. Modern Cotton Bowl would be the same situation now.

Cotton Bowl 2.0 is a vast improvement over the dinosaur in Fair Park.

Jerryworld looks like a sweet venue after watching the dump that is the Rose Bowl, and that mudpit in Orlando at the insight bowl. It's also a better venue than the Fiesta Bowl.

If the BCS wants to bring their product to the most opulent state-of-the-art facility, it's their business.

Holy crap, that interception wasn't completely his fault, but is he ****ing high? What was he doing on that fumble? This game is too ****ing weird. Both teams look like they would rather just lose.

That's five turnovers on OSU's last five possessions? How many chances did they have to put points on the board this second half? That sucks.

A minor point, but they got way screwed on that interception following the defensive encroachment. It's one thing if a ref blows a call--it happens and they can't be perfect. It's another thing entirely when a quarterback believes he has a free play due to a blatant offsides and takes a risk he might not normally take. That was crap.

EDIT: Make that six turnovers on their last six possessions. Too bad for Robinson. He's a good kid.

Fiesta Bowl passed up the Cotton Bowl when they matched up Miami and PSU for number one in 86..

Minor point? First, Robinson knew the guy was offside, second, because he was offside, he blew threw the line and forced the throw. That play totally changed the game. If I were Gundy, I'd have another famous quote to put on You Tube after this one. What conference were the officials from, BTW? What a joke.

Correct. The Cotton, Sugar, Rose, and Orange were indeed the big 4 and were for a long time the only bowls played on New Year's Day. The Rose is by far the oldest of the current bowls, while the Cotton, Orange, and Sugar Bowls date back to the 30's. The Fiesta Bowl didn't come along until 1971 and was moved to New Year's Day in 1982. The setup was that the Rose pitted the Big 10 champ against the Pac-10 champ, the Big 8 champ went to the Orange, SWC champ to the Cotton, and the SEC champ to the Sugar. The 2nd slots in the Sugar, Cotton, and Orange were open invitation, as were both slots in the Fiesta.

Back to the original topic, the Cotton seemed to lose it's luster sometime in the 90's, probably because of a combination of the demise of the SWC and that the Fiesta has a better weather location, and the Fiesta ended up being the 4th BCS bowl over the Cotton. Money undoubtedly figured in there somewhere along the line too.

    Several thoughts:

-- The game was WEIRD. Neither team really deserved to win. Ole Miss is a 4-win team without McCluster. That dude was awesome.
-- Zac hasn't been the same since he almost had a shoulder ripped off in the Holiday Bowl last year. He played injured most of this season but really hasn't had the tough-minded mindset since the end of last season. Honestly, his game against CU last year might have been his last true showing. Well, that and Bedlam last year.
-- Houston Nutt is a very solid coach. I think Mike Gundy is a decent coach, but will never win more than 8-9 games in a given season. He is scared of OU and UT.
-- OSU's defense was great yesterday; best its looked in at least a decade.

As for the Cotton Bowl, it was passed over for the Fiesta when the BCS started because of the weather. That is the thing that has held that game back over the years. New Year's in Dallas could be 70 and sunny or 24 and icy. Yeah, the stadium was old, but so was the Orange Bowl and it was in the mix. Now with this stadium -- and I've been there -- there's no way that this game won't host a BCS championship. I think they will go away from the dual-host format (bowl game and BCS game) and place the Cotton in the fifth slot and have the actual bowl games host the title game. The thing this is overlooked is that the Cotton, bar none, has the best reputation amongst the media in terms of how a bowl committee runs a game. To a man, it is the most popular game to cover. So there will be big media support for this and Bill Hancock, current BCS head, has Big Eight/12 ties and would probably push for their inclusion.

In short, the game's history and tradition puts it only behind the Rose when it comes to what it brings. Now that they're out of Fair Park and in a spaceship of awesome, there is literally NO negatives to this game. the DFW Metroplex is a great area and has a lot of activities for teams, media and fans. The weather might be hit-or-miss, but with the roof it won't matter anymore. I fully expect for the Big 12 to be looking for a new No. 2 bowl in a couple of years. (I think this is why the Alamo has bumped up its payout and is moving to No. 3 in the Big 12 next year; they realize the Cotton is about to go BCS which would remove it from the second bowl spot in the conference and they want that bad.)

I know. I re-read my post a second ago and saw that. I just think its a precursor to senility.
