for coaches. I know we all love Patterson and Kelly. Some are in love with EB and Embree, others are hoping for the Shanahans. All are good choices imo, but I'm thinking of some coaches that don't immediately come to mind. They don't necessarily have anything to do with CU and some aren't even from Cali/Texas. Just trying to get some discussion going as to coaches we may not be thinking of.
Al Golden: Head Coach of Temple. They are 8-2 this year after going 5-7 last year. That may not sound great by itself, but consider that this is Temple we're talking about. He came from Virginia as their DC and had a stint at Penn State as their linebackers coach as well as their recruiting coordinator for a year. He's a man, he's 40, so he's not too young nor too old. There are some issues I can see with him: he's from New Jersey, so no apparent Texas or California ties, he withdrew his name from the UCLA hunt to remain at Temple, so maybe he's not interested in leaving. He also might be #1 on Virginia's list when they fire Groh.
Bud Foster: DC at Virginia Tech. I'm not really sure he even wants to leave VT, but he's definitely worth a call. He has been a defensive and special teams coach for VT over the course of the last 20+ years with Beamer. He knows what it takes to build a program. He's 50 so he's right at that age where if he wants a HC spot he probably needs to take one soon, kind of reminds me of Cabral. Issues: no TX/CA recruiting ties, not sure of how good of a recruiter he is, never been a HC.
Dewayne Walker: HC at New Mexico State, former DC at UCLA. Pretty good pedigree as he was brought to USC by PC from the NFL. Has some NFL coaching experience. A big name in Southern California and definitely had some really good defenses while he was at UCLA. I think I recall him being a very good recruiter at UCLA, so he has that going for him. Problems: He's all of 3-7 this year as HC at NMSU, not very good. He's interesting to me because I could see him coming in and bringing back at least Embree and maybe EB too if he wants to be an OC, I don't see him taking a downgrade to come here just to coach RB.
David Cutcliffe: Current HC at Duke and ex OC at Tennessee. He did decently at Ole Miss in his previous HC job and is doing a pretty good job at Duke this year, 5-5 currently. Very good pedigree as an offensive mind, not sure about his head coaching abilities. Also from the South, no apparent TX/CA ties.
Jeff Jagodzinski: Ex HC at Boston College and currently unemployed after being fired in the preseason by the Bucs. He went 20-8 in his two seasons as head coach at BC, must keep in mind he had Matt Ryan for the better of the two seasons. It has this in his bio on wikipedia:
During his time with the Atlanta Falcons, Jagodzinski learned offensive zone blocking schemes from Alex Gibbs, the architect of successful NFL offensive lines such as the Denver Broncos that won Super Bowl XXXII.
so I know some of you will like that about him. Issues with him: he's from Wisconsin, but has spent most of his time in college on the east coast. Not sure about his recruiting abilities with no ties to TX/CA. He'd probably bring back Steve Logan as his OC who was a RB coach at CU for 2 years in 85-86.
So there's my list of interesting outside the box type candidates. I'm not saying any of these are perfect nor are some of them even likely. Most of what I wrote is basically a copy paste from wikipedia, so some of it could be wrong. I'm hoping to see some other unconventional candidates names, maybe include why they could be a good fit.
