    Saw this on sioncampus.com:
Check honorable mention and #8, one of two with two listings, and when has it even been called the Rocky Mountain Melee?

    Rocky Mountain Melee?

That's a new one on me. I didn't know *ebraska was anywhere close to the Rocky Mountains. Or maybe it's only a melee when they play in Boulder?

Any list with CU-NU at #8 is laughable.

I know he mentioned Army-Navy-AFA, but you have to include Army -Navy by itself even if it's a meaningless game.

Look, I hate nebraska as much as anybody. I have a peculiar personality flaw that makes want to fight anything brandishing a red "n".

However, no matter how much I personally relish the annual grudgefest between CU and nebraska, I can't believe it ranks on the national stage.

--It lacks historical balance. I believe that CU, in the decades to come, will gain parity with, and hopefully surpass our flatland neighbors to the north. But even through the nineties--arguably CU's strongest sustained decade--the huskers were a continual thorn in our side. The all-time win and loss record is similarly unfortunate.

--It lacks reciprocity. Look, we all know that most nebraskans hate CU fans and secretly want to beat CU more than any other team. But a true rivalry requires fans from both teams to openly embrace the rivalry. Until the nebraska fans come out of the closet, our rivalry can't reasonably make the top ten list.

--In recent years the game has lacked national implications. Yes, in the nineties both teams could typically be found in the top ten, and often the top five (I remember wanting to fight Phil Steele in the late nineties when he predicted we would finish 14th at the end of the season...we finished 14th and I was pissed...I'd kill to be ranked 14 now), but that was only one decade. The game also mattered in 1986 (sort of) and definitely in 1989. It was before my time, but also, I believe, in 1969-1972. But compared to the top two teams on the list...?

--CU lacks the rabid fanbase. As I've written in other posts, I consider it fortunate for CU that certain fans are attracted to the NFL and not the Buffs. I like our select fanbase. However, the SEC vs. anybody creates a crazy scene. We don't quite enjoy that atmosphere, and the fans we do have are a little fickle (clearly I'm not referring to the fans on this board--you guys are awesome) and a little dispersed (we have jobs). Having said that, our atmosphere is about a thousand times better than that lame thing that happens in So. Cal. USC vs. UCLA...are you kidding me? So lame.

So who's missing? Tough one. I think the writer got the top two correct, and despite the lack of national implications (such overwhelming history) Army/Navy belongs in the #3 slot. Texas and aTm belong somewhere in the top ten. Notre Dame and maybe somebody? South Carolina and Clemson? UVA and VA Tech has a pretty strong history, so it deserves consideration. The "Civil War" in Oregon lacks the national implications but at least all of the fans believe it to be the most important rivalry in America. Where's Purdue and Indiana for basketball? Just a few off of the top of my head.

I'm flattered that the writer thought about the Buffs. We are fortunate to hold the slot after Thanksgiving and to me, CU/nebraska is the single most important day of the year...it's my Christmas. I hope that someday nebraska fans will get off their butts and embrace this rivalry so that we can take it to the next level. Oh yeah, they also have to rebuild their team (as do we, but I believe we have a head start and a coach I wouldn't trade for any other).

    Go Buffs!

i got to go to the UM-OSU game this past year and see all the pre-game festivities, and to be honest, i have never seen such rabid, crazed exchanges between two opposing fanbases. i love CU and detest NU and all, but we are at least 10x behind michigan and ohio state in terms of rivalries, if that's even quantifiable. one of the posters above got it right about our fanbase (or lack thereof)...it just doesn't compare to those schools.

So first CU-fuskers doesn't qualify because of lack of reciprocity, and then you say UT-aTm should be in the top 10?

Almost every nebraska fan wants CU to lose every week, even if some don't own up to it. Most UT fans couldn't care less what aTm does. Many cheer for them every game except Thanksgiving week.

aTm does hate UT rabidly though. But even lately it's been getting tamer. Maybe because the aggies I know live in Austin, so they cheer for UT at bowl games, etc. I can't think of many CU fans cheering for nebraska at a bowl game, or vice-versa.

They changed it the last couple of years to showdown. Shootout was apparently too violent.

Perhaps I'm misinformed; certainly your vantage point is superior to mine. I based that comment on the opinions of my UT friends (okay, the sampling's limited, maybe ten people, all in their 30s) who all claim they take aTm far more seriously than OK. They all said that they consider A and M their true rival.

Here in Austin the aTm game is not that big of a deal. Slightly bigger stakes than a regular game because College Station is so close, and bragging rights. But the UT/OU game is where it's at. Seething hatred. And every week, OU's opponent is the second-most favorite team.

Maybe the aTm game used to be bigger during the SWC, which is when your friends would have been in school. I've even seen t-shirts during UT/OU week (worn by aggies) that say "gig'em horns".

Which gives me hope--here at NATO--that perhaps the Greeks will one day wear T-shirts proclaiming, "My Parents went to Turkey and all I got was this lousy Shirt".

Most NU fans I know wat CU to win every game except ONE every year. They still live in the 90's when strength of schedule was such a big deal to them. Also most NU fans I talk to really like Hawkins they just don't want to loose to him. Most want the big XII to become THE college football conference. They get tired of hearing how the SEC keeps beating themselves up and how they are the best conference in the country. There are even a few who chear for CU as a team. They just really don't like the fans..........at all...........not even a little bit. They had respect for McCartney but not so much for Ricky and while they respected the teams that Barnett put on the field they didn't have much respect for him as an individual. Most remember the Northwestern years when he was there and the turmoil when he left followed by the turmoil when he left CU etc.

Personally it often appears that CU fans are in competition with NU fans where NU fans are more focused on football. Just an observation.

KSU is kinda the same way only more personal. As I've mentioned before I live in the SE corner of Nebraska and am just about as close to MO, IA, KS as I am NE. KSU fans are royally obnoxious because there are so many in the area. CU fans are few and far between, there are no KU fans, more and more MO fans now that they are winning and NO IA fans because they have absolutely nothing to be excited about.

The difference is winning and importance. A rivalry is not a rivalry unless it matters, unless it's the make or break game for the year. While CU fans feel the NU game is the make or break NU has their sights set higher (not rightfully so) on national implications which is a shame. The truth be told in this day and age every game matters if you have any plans on a top ranking or a top bowl game. It's like a 10-12 game play off that lasts from the kick off classic to the bix XII championship.

Yeah, it shouldn't qualify. And no Cal-Stanford? At least they got the top 2 right.

But anything's okay with me that produces a Jashon Sykes sighting

    Texas-Texas A&M is a MUCH more hate-filled rivalry than CU-NU.

And again ... no Cal-Stanford? WTF?

I've been to both games (and their tailgates), and that's just not the case. At least when I've been there. Although granted, I haven't been to College Station, only the Austin version.

the Red River Shootout or Rivalry is a corporate sponsorship name that's probably no more than 10-15 years old....so, it's subject to the vicissitudes of public opinion because corporate sponsorship of any kind is essentially PR and advertising for the parent company (like PGA golf tournaments) and so if a "name" is perceived as "too violent" or unpopular it's "bad" or seen as "irresponsible" PR. for most of it's history it's just been the Texas-Oklahoma game...only recently has it been the RR-whatever.

but, where they pulled Rocky Mountain Melee from, wtf knows?
