The Track and Field team is in Palo Alto today and tomorrow for the Stanford Invitational. Here is a preview from the Stanford website:
STANFORD, Calif. - More than 3,300 athletes and 100 collegiate teams will converge at the 29th annual Stanford Invitational track and field meet on Friday at Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Competition begins each day at 9 a.m. with field events. On Friday, running events begin at 10:40 a.m. and continue to about 11:30 p.m. On Saturday, running events begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at about 5:30 p.m.

For adults, tickets are $15 for both days or $10 each day. For youths, seniors, and staff, tickets are $5 each day. The ticket booth outside the entrance to the track stadium opens at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday.

In addition, fans can watch the meet live on Flotrack.org.

The Stanford Invitational begins the outdoor season in earnest for Stanford and most of the other collegiate teams competing. Open and high school athletes will compete as well.

Sixteen of Stanford's 21 returning All-Americans are scheduled to compete in individual events, including seniors Karynn Dunn (who will compete in the long jump), Justine Fedronic (400 meters, 1,500), Kathy Kroeger (1,500), Carissa Levingston (400) among the women, and Spencer Chase (800) Jules Sharpe (high jump), Tyler Stutzman (5,000), Geoffrey Tabor (discus, shot put), and Dartis Willis II (high jump) among the men.

Fedronic is among four Stanford record holders to compete -- she holds the school outdoor record in the 800 (2:03.54). The others are Michael Atchoo, the indoor mile record-holder (3:57.14), who will run the 5,000; Kori Carter, who holds every outdoor and indoor women's hurdles record, will run the 100 hurdles; and indoor 800 record-holder Amy Weissenbach (2:05.56), a freshman making her
Stanford outdoor debut, who will take the starting line in the 400 and 1,500.

Kroeger will run her first outdoor track race since the Olympic trials 5,000 final. The reigning Pac-12 cross-country champ will run the 1,500.

Among other high-profile athletes, the meet will feature Arizona high jumper Brigetta Barrett, who won the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. Also, two-time NCAA champion Jordan Hasay of Oregon will run in her first-ever track 10,000.

The Stanford Invitational has been held continuously since 1985, but has its roots as far back as 1975 when Stanford first began holding a large late-March meet with the advent of the Stanford Relays.

The meet has taken different forms - with then-coach Brooks Johnson transforming it into the high-profile Martin Luther King Games from 1980-83 at Stanford Stadium. There was no meet in 1984, but it started up the following year and has taken different forms, such as the Stanford Track and Field Festival and the Diet Pepsi Track Challenge. It has been called the Stanford Invitational since 1995.
