There are teams of destiny: the 1980 Oakland Raiders, BYU in 84, CU in 90, etc... These improbable champions were just good enough and then got breaks when they needed them; as if the invisible hand of Joseph Smith deflected a kick here, granted a 5th down there, etc... Perhaps it was Satan in 1980.

Then there is bad luck. Everyone has some bad luck, but bad luck is not the opposite of destiny. CU is a team of tragedy. We are like Othello, DiCaprio in The Departed. We are the Jon Snow of college football.

Have we been a team of tragedy through this decade? No, CU was just sHHty prior to 2014. In 2014 we were a team on the verge. In 2015 we are a team of tragedy. We talk sHt about our coaches or players, and yeah there are some things to be desired, but these same guys could just as easily be sitting at 9/2 and the doyens of turn-around college programs. Instead we are the bad news bears, but our bus gets hit by a drunk driver after the game.

Tragic characters have fatal flaws. It may be greed or jealousy or hate or sloth or vanity or indecision.

The character of the team is reflected by the coach. What fatal flaws underscore this season?

Everyone else is so lucky they don't have to deal with adversity.

good teams get breaks. bad teams lose.

we don't have enough p12 guys on the roster to close out teams like this. usc was only occasionally paying attention and they won on the strength of their athletes.

this isn't tragedy. talent usually prevails. sure, sometimes, you can jump a team that is looking past you, but you can't count on that.

good coaching and organization are only a part of the puzzle. you have to recruit.

and, finally, i know we are going to hear about how young we are, again. not an excuse. this is college ball. young great athletes are better than experienced average athletes.

i like this staff for the most part. but, they have to recruit better or we will never be more than a tragic tough out for the rest league.

MM's flaw is that he is a nice guy. Our tragic flaw is that we are too well-balanced and put together to have a great football program in a small state. Colorado and CU alumni don't include the bubba's with the numbness of mind that allow a small states like Nebraska to be a cyclical football power at the expense of everything else.

Teams of destiny aren't USC, Stanford and Oregon. Those are teams of domination. Talent prevails for those teams. CU will never be a team of domination. We weren't a team of domination in the 90s.

We could be a team of destiny. We are good enough for that. We could have had our same O-line all year. We could be sitting at 9/2. Then we would be calling sefo one of the best QBs in the PAC12, Lindgren the best young coordinator in America and Tupou a potential first round pick.

    wrong. wrong. wrong.

domination in just the 90s, just a few facts:

    a national championship
    9 bowl games (going 7-2)
a heisman trophy winner, with 6 guys in the top 20 vote getters
2 butkus trophys, 2 thorpe trophies, among others.
    19 consensus all-americans
7 conference championships or runner up
143 consecutive weeks ranked (from 89-97)
54 nfl draft picks (10 of 11 offensive starters in 1994 played in the nfl)

that's just a quick review. talent. wins.

I fondly remember CU in the 90s. We were a good team, but never a dominant team. We did have some great players. But we didn't consistently blow out strong competition like Oregon of the past few years or USC of the 2000s. We would struggle against teams like Miami. We went back and forth with teams like Nebraska. We won a ton of close games. We had the catch. We had the fifth down.

We imposed our will on other teams back then. Nobody blew out Miami or the holers in the 90s, and even the best teams now don't blow out good competition. The kind of team you describe doesn't exist and it never has, or will.

First of all, in no way could we be sitting at 9-2 right now. Secondly, Tupou had been suspended from school and is not playing right now.

Arizona has lost more linebackers to injury than we have and their starting quarterback is feared lost for future games just like ours. They're mediocre but still manage to win multiple conference games. We've had terrible luck losing players especially to injury but it's magnified to us because we don't have a roster stocked with talent that can play with anyone in a P5 conference. Tragedy is taking it a bit far.

We could be sitting at 9/2 right now had things gone a little differently and you don't get my point in bringing up Tupou.

We like to think we were like Alabama earlier in this decade, or the Miami of old. I am sorry, but we just were not. We were like Kansas state in the late 90s...a good team but not a dominant one.

wrong. . Ask the rest of the Big 8 from 89-95 if we were dominant or not.

If, if, if...they didn't and we're nowhere close to 9-2 right now. As long as we're going to make believe land, why not just make us 11-0?

Watching the game Friday night and what summed up CU over the last many years of suck is the fact that even playing in Boulder we can't find a kicker that can reach the end zone. The easiest job in all of college football should be to recruit a kicker to Boulder to play in the altitude. If we can't recruit a decent kicker how are we ever going to get any of the skill players needed to improve the team.

    Like you would know.

What I remember is, not only could the Buffs of old dominate, but they had a nasty streak. NeuWeasel tried making his teams more finesse, and by the time Hawkins was canned, the Buffs appeared castrated.

A tough guy QB like Sefo isn't the worst thing to happen to the Buffs, lately. I think Leavitt brings some much needed intensity too, and hopefully this team regains some of that old identity - they were fun to watch.

For which of the following scores are you declaring retroactive victory?

    Is it 23-48? Perhaps 24-41?

    Or is it 10-42?

I see a three score loss, a four score loss, and a five score loss. So which one is it? Which one did we "dominate" (this is my new favorite local meme in the wake of the UCLA game)? You know, how we really steamrolled the opposition, but had bad luck at the end and lost? Was it all three of these games?

... In all seriousness, this team is 1-6 in conference, and 3 of the losses were blowouts (I don't prefer to debate whether a game that we lost by 17 points is a blowout or not, by the way). Of our four wins, two were by respectively 3 and 4 points, and the other two are against teams that compete at a lower level of college football than we do.

This season is a lot closer to 2-9 than it is to your laughable suggestion of 9-2.

We need an "unlike post" option. Wisconin cheddar is the best.

It's a bit dramatic to place it all on the kickoff, but it is incredibly frustrating. I can't think of a single kicker from an away team that struggles as much as our kickoff "specialists" do. The problem is also magnified by us having 3 scholarship kickers - what a joke.
