The beat reporters have known this for a while, but Wes Gordon can blow up a mic. Case-in-point, from yesterday's CUBuffs.com article:

“I’m hungry,” he said. “I feel like a beast that hasn’t eaten yet . . . like a giant that’s been locked away in a cage and is finally getting some air.”

I can't wait to see him attack the court in November. Get your popcorn ready.

I really excited to see 240lb Gordon play, especially defensively. If he can protect the paint as well as Roberson, our defense can be just as good as last year, and our offense should be much better with all the new additions.

Roberson struggled against the huge bigs in the Pac12, so if Gordon can stop those guys, our team will be tough to beat.

? I don't remember 'Dre struggling much on defense, regardless of opponent.

The struggles against the Paul Bunyon bigs was more of a Jelly Scott struggle than a Dre struggle.

Both of you are right. I'm confusing Roberson with Scott. Scott couldn't defend the ASU big or that Washington big or Iverson from CSU. All those guys were 250lbs+.

I hope Scott can put on 20lbs because that will really help him. Or, Gordon can guard those types.

See bold: it's tough to defend a guy who is throwing you down on your head. :pissed:

Anyway, and unfortunately, Gordon is likely to play mostly 5 not Dre's 4. Unless Mills somehow because a viable sub for real minutes.

Everyone often jokes a bit about Mills playing, but when he played late in the season last year, I didnt think he did that bad. Is he taking starters minutes? no, but he wasnt any worse than Simba. I still think he should have been used a little bit more.

I agree completely. I never thought Mills would ever develop into anything more than a practice/bench player. But when he did sub in last year he wasn't that bad. He isn't the best defender because he's so light, but he has a pretty soft touch around the rim.

When you're 6'10", you can be pretty damn skinny and weigh 220 pounds.

Which tells the entire story on why Mills often had problems at 7'1" and about 195.

I think that Scott is one of those kids who will be able to put on 25lbs and not have it hurt him a bit. He is never going to be a strongman winner but the extra weight will make it easier for him to hold position both on defense and on offense.

Gordon is I think going to be a guy who impresses people. He isn't close to Scott in terms of offensive skills (not very many big guys are so that's not a criticism) but he is a guy who can and will play agressively. Adding extra weight to him is going to make him a challenge for anyone who wants to bang in the lane but he won't be a slug like a lot of guys who are physical.

Those who say Mills wasn't that bad are also right. He has some touch around the hoop and doesn't have bad hands for a big guy, his biggest problem is that he is just to easy to push around. Apparently he has tried to put on weight and failed. Had he even done what most consider normal weight gain he would be about 30lbs heavier and a much better player.

Mills is about 15 lbs heavier than he came in at which is brutal but doesn't tell the whole story. After the 2011/-12 Campaign Tad isolated nutrition and eating habits as a major issue for his team so he hired a professional basketball only nutritionist and cook for the team. Prior to last year the two guys it paid the biggest dividend for were Mills and Spencer, almost all of the weight Ben has put on was done after the 11/12 season it is not out of the question to think he could replicate that this year. He's not going to be Shane's size ever but even if he can get to 235-240 it would make a big difference for him.

Agree completely. Every bit of weight that he puts on makes him harder to push around. He's never going to be Shaq but he doesn't have to be to help this team. He just needs to be strong enough and heavy enough that he can hold position against most of the guys he will face.

It's a shame that the program Tad put him on or something similar didn't happen earlier. I have heard that there isn't a guy on the team more willing to cooperate with the coaches and his teammates. If the program had been in place earlier an extra 10lbs at this point would have made a difference. There were some times last year where we could have absolutely used him in games but he was limited by his ability to stay up on defense.

Part of the issue with programs was early voluntary adoption, having Alec Burks as a team leader and a young Dre in tow doesn't really inspire the rest of the team to work out/eat right etc.

I am really looking forward to watching wes (flash? can we have flash and fletch on the same team?) getting down in the paint with the other bigs. I've heard he's an excellent defender, and with him adding all that weight last season it is most certainly going to help.
As for mills, it's unfortunate that he hasnt been able to put on the weight. Dude's a whole foot taller than me and weighs about 15lbs more than I do. I dont think he'll ever get up to 20+ minutes a game, but it would be nice to see him on the court for ~5 or so in games.

I will maintain that Mills will likely see more minutes this year out of pure necessity. Shane, Dre and Adams are all front court guys that left the program. We're getting in some Freshmen who have never played D-1 hoops to replace them. At least at the start of the season, Mills will be relied upon to provide more than mop-up minutes.

Depends on matchups and how much work Mills puts in the weight room this summer.

Lower body was where his weight was last year. Now hopefully, he's added upper body weight and greater strength to both! And maybe an inch or so??? (Recall his doc indicated his growth plates still hadn't stopped extending.)

I don't know. Adams primarily played the 3 and even Dre spent quite a bit of time there, especially later in the year as XJ excelled at the 4.

We've got 80 minutes to give at the 4 and 5 and I'd expect Scott and Gordon to take around 50 of those between them. If XJ spends most of his time at the 4, that doesn't leave much. I think whatever is left over is just as likely to go to Thomas as a stretch 4 as it is Mills.

The beast eats minutes at the 4 and 5, and uses the time to snack on the souls of his opponents.

If Scott picks up two fouls in the first half, Mills is coming in. That may change as the year progresses, and the Freshmen begin to figure out what they're doing.

Gordon would slide over to the 5. Hell, Gordon may not even start, so to say that Mills will come in if Scott has foul trouble is extremely premature.

except that is exactly what happened last year when Shane was dinged up, and Mills have been hustling this off season.
