I keep hearing about how bad Coach Mac's 1984 squad was and how they went to a bowl game the very next year. They were 1-10 so some (not many ABers but outside of AB) say JE could do the same thing.

I have been so curious about the quality of opponents they played in 1984 and the point differences.

    1984 Season
    Michigan State (21-24) L
    Oregon (20-27) L
    Notre Dame (14-55) L
    UCLA (16-33) L
    Missouri (7-52) L
    Iowa State (23-21) W
    Nebraska (7-24) L
    Oklahoma State (14-20) L
    Kansas (27-28) L
    Oklahoma (17-42) L
    Kansas State (6-38) L

    2012 Season
    CSU (17-22) L
    Sac St (28-30) L
    Fresno St (14-69) L
    WSU (35-34) W
    UCLA (14-42) L
    ASU (17-51) L
    USC (6-50) L
    Oregon (14-70) L
    Stanford (0-48) L

By my count, the 1984 team had a total point differential in losses of 188 for all 11 games. No shutouts and numerous games were close. Don't know how good all those teams were that year, but those are some big name schools. Mac also pulled in a wicked recruiting class in 1984 giving hope that they were on the rise.

JE's team in 2012 has a point differential in losses of 272 points through 9 games (not 11)! Recruiting class not looking so hot right now.

    No comparison. Nuff said.

Totally agree. Tired of hearing about 1984 too. Don't see the comparison nor do I see why its relevant. Besides its much easier to win these days with the scholarship limits.

What I want to see is the number of coaches that went 1-10 or even won 2 or 3 games in year two/three that never were able to win period. That number is more relevant than these endless, pointless comparisons to Mac.

1984 only demonstrates that it is possible... probable on the other hand is a totally different story

1984 and McCartney are ancient ****ing history. The sooner Embree and the aministration figure that out, the better off we will be. I'm sick of Colorado living by looking in the rearview mirror at past glory. Go out and create a new chapter!

I agree the comparison to Mac is only anecdotal. It however is the most relevant anecdotal evidence to counter the argument that Mac did the same thing at Colorado and turned it around.

The argument many JE supporters (the ones that remain) use is that we are on our way up and this is the same blip that Mac went through and JE is Mac's prodigy...

I think looking at the evidence of what happened in 1984 is an important component of understanding if the JE supporters argument holds water. I think the evidence suggests otherwise.

Maybe it is just because I was just a snotty-nosed college student at the time, but I had hope in 1984. I see nothing to justify hope in 2012.

I walked to the hill with coach Mac in 84 on a Friday night. I love that guy.

Please bring in a person who will fix this ****.

Mac was a defensive coordinator at Michigan. Embree is a TE coach.

This is great information. Might be good stuff to summarize and include in e-mails to Regents, the admin, media, etc. One of the big arguments for keeping Embree seems to be the ridiculous comparisons to Mac's early years. Shattering that illusion can't hurt....
