sounds like this will be Wilner's last update unless something BIG happens-

    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/colleg...the-case-for-the-oklahoma-schools/#more-21166

The Pac-12 won’t be the first to 13. No chance of that.

But if the SEC goes to 13 — and it will if/when the legal issues are resolved — then the Pac-12 will take the approach that the SEC is headed to 16 and the Big Ten will expand to at least 14 (and possibly 16) when its current TV deal is up in a few years.
And looking at that landscape … with the SEC headed to 16 and the Big Ten to 14 or more … the Pac-12 CEOs would be willing to expand again.
*** They don’t want to be the Pac-14 right now, but they’d accept the Oklahoma schools and become the Pac-14 in order to protect the conference down the road — to give it the size and power to compete with the expanded SEC and Big Ten.

This is actually what I'm afraid of - don't overplay your hand, Scott! The Big 12 isn't going to last for very long and OU and OSU aren't going anywhere. We shouldn't be adding whatever teams we can grab just to play catch up.

If the Big 12 stays together for a little longer, we can be more selective in pursuing the best schools for us, which may or may not be OSU and Tech.

Plus, what the heck are we going to do with 7-team divisions in the Pac-14?

Seems like that would be almost as bad as the East/West Pac-16.

they'll probably split the LA schools

I'm with sackman, don't see any reason to expand.

I think they'd be more likely to move Utah to the North, have 1 protected rival in the other division, and then do 2 rotating games against the other 6 teams so that everyone plays everyone in a home/home over a 3 year period.

Doubt Larry Scott at your own peril.

Why even have a conference with more than 12? It is not like you can play everyone every year anyway, if you go more then 12 you may not see your "rival" for 4 years.

The pods are meant to lump rivals together, and since the PAC-12 Rivalries are very geographically based it makes it easy

You can't play everyone every year once you get above 10.

I always thought that 9 was the best number for a conference. It gives a balances conference schedule (4 home / 4 away), you play everyone, and you have an opportunity to have some flexibility with the non-conference slate. I'm not sure why no one every went with that. Isn't the Big East trying it?

The Oklahoma offer next to nothing to the PAC-14. They won't bring in fertile recruiting territory. They won't bring in additional advertising revenue. After all, OK is a small, relatively poor state. Both Oklahoma schools have built their success on recruiting in Texas. I don't think they want to cut Texas road games from their schedule. PAC-14 makes no sense.

On the upside, when it comes to California, they travel well...

When all is said and done, I don't think OU really wants to leave UT. I think they're trying to make a point, but if UT doesn't come along to the Pac, I don't think they'll be happy.

BUT, I think it hurts Okie St more than it hurts OU. OU will continue the Red River Rivalry. Anyone who buys what OU has been piping about that is nuts. That means one big-time game in Dallas every year. OU is not going to be hurting for TX recruits. But if A&M is playing in the SEC, UT and Tech are playing in some perversion of the Big 12/SWC, and the closest Okie State will be playing to TX is Stoolwater or Norman, they're screwed in the TX recruiting department.

Utah can be simply sent to the North and we have both LA schools in the South.

Having the "protected rival" and the 2 X 3 scheduling makes the most sense, as it gives 9 conference games and 3 ooc games. This set up is at least doable.

And Nik -- this is a solid idea. I think you've been hanging around Larry Scott too much. Your ideas have become stellar.

The thing really stopping us from going jumping to the PAC-32 SEXCONFERENCE is probably, the more teams that come into the conference, the fewer teams that get access to the LA area.

NOBODY wants that unless the money gets really big. I don't see that happening for a while.

The Pac can wait to expand - for now. But as someone recently mentioned in one of the other expansion threads is that you don't want to wait too long and be left with schools like SDSU, Fresno, UNM, etc. as your best options for expansion.

@Nik - Yes the Big East will have 9 schools for football in 2012 with TCU joining.

Petition the NCAA to change the season to a 18 game schedule, and give an extra year of eligibility to the student professionals and all problems are solved. Really it is so easy a caveman could figure this out.
