Gonzaga and St. Mary's get a little more competition in WCC hoops.

I think the writing was on the wall this week. Honestly I am not all that upset with BYU bolting.

As far as CSU goes it remains to be seen how it will all play out. CSU could actually stand to make more money. At the end of the day the conference wasn't even paying out $2 million per team with BYU and Utah in conference. Now with BYU and Utah out - the contract with the MTN is void and the MWC can re-evalute its t.v. options and even negotiate a new deal. I could certainly see a 10 team league that includes TCU and BSU bringing in a t.v. contract worth more money to the MWC programs than the current system. Add in a potential play-in game with C-USA as has been discussed and CSU could still have a path to an automatic bid with less resistance from both BYU and Utah and their athletic budgets that were nearly twice CSU's size. It will just take time to see how everything unfolds. Certainly not the end of the world.

There isn't much of a change for MWC. But BYU is a bigger TV draw than either TCU and BSU imo

I agree. However, with BYU still in the conference - the MWC was stuck playing out that horrible t.v. contract under the MTN. Now the conference can walk away from that deal and possibly negotiate something with more exposure and a better payout for the remaining schools. Also - here is a novel concept....basketball games on Sunday again! I think I hear the cheers from New Mexico already.

I don't think this ends well for anybody involved. BYU is a part of the identity of the MWC, they are probably more identified with the league nationwide than any other team including now departed Utah or TCU. From a standpoint of getting national recognition this will be an injury to the league even though BYU on the field has fallen behind Utah, TCU, Boise. I don't see the league making major strides in TV revenue losing the SLC television market and now the money gets split 11 and potentially 12 ways.

I also think that BYU is going to find it tougher to make of go of being independent than they think. They are just good enough to embarass the major programs that they need to schedule to have any kind of national recognition. Utah is not exactly a hotbed of HS talent so there is no recruiting advantage to playing BYU and they are not seen as a national power so the advantage of beating them is heavily outweighed by the negatives of losing to them. Playing BYU is not like playing Notre Dame which results in a large part of the country paying attention to your program for a week. The best BYU is going to be able to do with significant opponents is to play 2 for 1's or to play games that are very heavily favored to the opponents financially. The majority of their schedule will be filled with "who cares teams."

csu might be able to win the conference someday again, especially if the Big 12 picks up TCU and Boise.

Hey MWC, looks like your plan of inviting Nevada and Fresno State couldn't stop BYU from leaving.

I'm not at all surpised they went to the WCC in their other sports, that made the most sense seeing as there wasn't much left of the WAC.

How this all turns out for BYU will really depend on what backroom deals they've got worked out with ESPN. If they really are able to get bcs conference competition for most of the schedule, and stay competitive, they'll come out fantastic.

My first instinct is that the MWC is in trouble. I don't think the rest of the Nation will really care to watch the Mountain if they don't have a team undefeated and in BCS contention.

When this rumor first broke, I questioned how bring 'em young could get teams to play them late in the season (late Oct/early Nov), when everybody's deep into their conference schedules. The question still stands. There are very few independents, and I'm pretty sure those teams schedules are set for the next 3-5 years. Teams in conferences would have to be persuaded (read, per$uaded) to move a conference game into early/mid September, just to schedule the cougs late. I'd love to see how they plan to pull this off.

Maybe I missed it but did Boise and TCU disappear out of the MWC?

I think BYU is angling for a spot in the Mack 10. Careful what you wish for, guys.

The transformation of the MWC conference back to the WAC is almost complete. Losing BYU is absolutely huge. That was by far the most marketable school in the conference. TCU will bolt the first chance it gets. Might as well gobble up what is left of the WAC and call it whatever you want. Either way you can be damn sure the TV people aren't chomping at the bit for a conference headlined by TCU and Boise.

The MWC best bet would be to fold the Mountain Network (which was a stupid idea to begin with) and work out a deal with Fox or something.

This is a big deal for the MWC. They lose their two current flagship schools, one of which is basically on par with most solid BCS schools in turns of historical wins, championships and heismans, facilities, etc. and gain Boise which is very good now, but has a long way to go history wise and Fresno and Nevada. The conference is still ok, but that BCS evaluation just went out the window, no chance at an auto bid any time soon. They may be able to get a new tv deal, but with the loss of probably the most rabid fan base and best football state in Utah/BYU, it will still be peanuts.

i think it would be tough to find more then a handful of people who think this was a good move for BYU... it sucks for the Mo West, but much like your hatred of Texas's popularity, CSU feels the same for BYU. I think its a mutual agreement to break up. CSU gets one less team in their way towards a conference title, and BYU gets...

-More TV exposure(though who will want to watch them play Utah school for the def and blind)
-to be indepentent( no omore conf championships, the only goal they have will be BCS games, which they will need a hell of a lot of luck to even be in the mix with their weak ass sos coming up.
-to be WCC for other sports with other religous schools...

sucks for their other sports(other then BBall)... they really threw them under the bus

Well, I thought CT did a good job, losing UU had to hurt, and when the moromons were looking to bail, getting Fresneck and Nevada was pretty good maneurvering. It looked like that was going to keep BYU, and add Boise, Fresneck and Nevada to upgrade the package. Unfortunately, BYU is leaving anyway and trading BSU and Fresneck for the mormons and mormon secular U isn't really an upgrade, and maybe not a maintenance of the status quo. Nevada at least doubles the chances for MWC coaches to hit the tables, so they ahve that going for them.

I think this was a bad deal for everybody involved. Stupid on BYU's part. I think they have a vastly over-inflated sense of self-worth.

Bad for everybody except the Pac 12, I should say. This basically eliminates all competitors for TV coverage of West coast games.

    agreed..

not sure what happens next.. does the MWC stay at 10, or make a move to get a Houston type of team?... and get a tiny footprint into that mkt... I bet we stay at 10. Losing Utah and BYU sucks, but it is what it is... the MWC is a stepping stone conference. Any team would do what Utah did and bolt if given the chance to move up into a higher conf... I personally think BYUs decision was stupid though.

I think this makes a ton of sense for BYU. It pales in comparison to the jump that UU made, but its probably better than wallowing with the middlers in the MWC.

Also sets up an epic hoops rivalry with Gonzaga.
