LOL -- wut??? Hopefully she misunderstood and isn't intentionally selling this load of BS to DTV customers. If you have the time, would call up again and see if you get the same response. If you do, tell that they are completely full of it. SuperD, actually I think its closer to 10 cents outside footprint. And its definitely no more than 80 cents inside. I wouldn't doubt DTV is asking 20/month stand alone a la carte fee, which is total BS as well. Bottom line, they are using the PAC12N to advance their agenda in changing the way MSO's pay for these RSNs. They are counting on P12 fans living up to the ambivalent reputation.

I will call again tomorrow. DTV sure does like to use the Sunday Ticket as their crutch... that's for sure.

Dish vs. ESPN: The Mother of All Fee Fights?

Washington, D.C. (August 6, 2013) - Dish's eight-year carriage deal with ESPN is scheduled to end next month and it could lead to the nastiest and most important fee fight yet in the TV industry.

David Geotzl of MediaPost.com notes that relations between Dish and ESPN and Disney, which owns ESPN, have not been cordial over the years with lawsuits filed from both sides over issues such as back carriage fees and alleged unfair rates.

While it's in the best interest of both companies to keep broadcasting ESPN to Dish's 14 million plus subscribers, the acrimony between the two and Dish's interest in reducing its cost for sports programming overall could lead to an extended channel blackout

And if it does, it could encourage other TV providers to take a stand against ESPN's demands for significantly higher carriage fees to help offset its multi-billion contracts to carry the NFL, college football and other sports.



Media Post says the current Dish-ESPN deal is set to expire September 30, which would be during the 2013 NFL season. Without ESPN, Dish subscribers would be unable to watch Monday Night Football. However, Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen, a steely negotiator, has shown a willingness in the past to do without seemingly critical programming to make a point in carriage talks.

Media Post estimates that Dish is now paying an average of more than $5 a month per subscriber for ESPN, but could be asked to raise that to $7 a month or more. It's hard to believe that Ergen will readily accept that rate and it could trigger his call for ESPN to be a separate, a la carte channel, something ESPN would fiercely oppose because it would mean fewer viewers and fewer advertising/carriage dollars.

Dish could also pull a few rabbits -- or kangaroos -- out of its hat by telling ESPN that it will not subject the network to its Hopper HD DVR's automatic ad-skipping feature if it relents on higher carriage fees. Dish currently only allows subscribers to use the feature on primetime programs on the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC), which has led to lawsuits from the networks.

The more you examine the Dish-ESPN negotiation, the more thorny you see it can become, particularly since Ergen once wistfully said he could foresee a day when a TV provider did not offer any sports.

September should be an interesting month in the sports world, and not just on the field

Fox Sports 1 has rights for some Pac 12, Big 12, Big East games.

Its called the law of diminishing returns. ESPN will eventually squeeze the distributors or the end users to the point where they will start to drop the service further causing losses back at the mother ship. Advertisers, in turn, refuse to pay the rates because the customer base shrinks. There is a tipping point in there somewhere.

Charlie, if he picks up some other services and drops ESPN could lead to the beginning of fragmentation where each provider only has part of the pie. That will lead customer to chose one provider over another because the offering is more compelling to his tastes. Then i think you'll start to see some a la carte or legitimate streaming offers. Netflix is already a form of fragmentation as is XBOX and DTV knows it. Live sports is the only thing holding their little fiefdom together.

If the NFL re-news their exclusive with DTV you'll know right there which direction this headed. If they go to XBOX stick a fork in DTV.

Unfortunately for Larry Scott and the PAC12 Net (and all that revenue he promised) an a la carte or streaming package will greatly diminish P12 revenue. College football may have to form an alliance like the NFL to negotiate deals that benefit everyone.

They gave me Sunday Ticket Max with redzone, one discount that knocked $40 off my bill for a year and another that knocked $15 for 3 months.

They offered me $35 a month for a year and Sunday ticket. They also echoed the billions of dollars the PAC 12 wants.
 
Bottom line its Larry Scott's job to get the Pac 12 on my Direct TV. package Until that happens F you Scott. You are just as dead as Embree is to me.

Since we are bottom lining this, what do expect Scott to do? I lay this at the feet of apathetic PAC fans who are taking g the freebies and DirecTV for using the P12 network as an example.
If anyone has noticed, time Warner hasn't carried CBS for two weeks and counting. MSOs are taking a stand.
Thankfully, most everyone else carries the network.

I would rather the carriers drive a hard line to keep fees down. I really don't care that Directv doesn't carry the Pac network, because I can just go to my parents house who have comcast and watch anything there. Meanwhile I clean up on the freebees.
 
I prefer the additional revenue of ~6-8 million a month a deal with DirecTV would throw into the networks pockets. Also prefer PAC 12 Networks being available in bars. And mostly I prefer not having to go through this again this time next year.

Know I am being a pain in the ass on this and keep repeating ... just can't help making other people's decisions on their carrier. :wink2:

I've got the same problem, in spades. I have a perfectly good antenna but only get a few PAC-12 games. I've called my antenna provider, but they didn't offer anything extra. I also have the internet, but evidently Rivals and Scout don't want me to read about my Buffs, because I can't get to that content. Bastards, all of them.
 
I still think a massive, sustained email campaign would be effective. The PAC is painting DirecTV into a corner on this. Until it becomes a problem for them, they won't relent. Flood their servers with emails. Make them respond to 100,000 emails a day for six weeks running. If their customer service agents are doing nothing other than respond to PAC 12 network complaints, that will get their attention.

The only thing that is going to make a difference is if it hurts their bottom line. As long as DirecTV has the NFL they are not going to lose very many customers.

It is unfortunate because the PAC 12 is going to lose a lot of potential revenue. At this point they should probably go back to DirecTV with the same deal that Dish has and Comcast has and U-verse has. At least in that situation the PAC 12 would get SOME revenue from DirecTV.

Then in a couple years, when the product is established, they could go back to the bargaining table and try to negotiate a better deal.

Perhaps during that time frame someone from the PAC 12 will step up and get into the championship picture so the network becomes that much more desirable.

I believe that is the offer on the table that DTV is refusing. DTV's desire is to make PAC12Net an ala-carte offering. PACNets wants to be part of the same package as BTN, not ala-carte.
 
Jimmy is right. With DTV having Sunday Ticket and many bars also having DTV, the Pac-12 needs to find a way to get its network on DTV even if that means giving them a better deal. DTV is the biggest provider out there plus they have the ace in the hole with Sunday Ticket so they can't expect to sell their network to DTV at the same price as the other carriers are paying for it.

We’re asking that PAC-12 agrees to a price that is affordable for all of our customers, as we’ve offered and done with dozens of other sports networks. We’ve also proposed that PAC-12 allow fans to buy the network separately or purchase individual games on demand. Unfortunately, Pac 12 has refused all of these options. We are firmly committed to protecting our customers from unfair price increases. DIRECTV is ready to add PAC-12 Network when they propose a deal that’s fair to our valued customers.

Thanks DTV, for protecting me from the despicable crooks at the Pac 12 network. I would much rather purchase CU games on demand than be forced into having them included in my existing package. :rolling_eyes:
 
Just emailed DTV. I will proabbly just re-up with comcast, but since they don't have the PAC I want to make sure they know why I am not considering them.
 
here is the response I got from my email:

I've been going back and forth quite a bit with these guys. They never seem to have an answer on why the market value I pay for the cooking network, true TV and a host of kid programs I don't watch is "fair" when I can't get the only channel I actually want. Those guys make the packages that we have to buy, want it or not. Their "fair" argument falls flat.
