Stream of conciousness notes.
1. Collier looks small. Redshirt?
2. The Providence guard passes the eyeball test.
3. Fletch, Thomas, Hopkins have added significant weight. Miller is cut from a rock.

I'd start a 3 guard, 1 combo, 1 center offense. When you have an all american like scott, you have to give him room to operate.
5. Scott
4. XJ
3. Fletcher
2. Booker
1. Talton

Collier won't shirt. Plenty of weight on him. King has added good weight too and Thomas actually has slimmed down. He's more cut though.

Hope Booker starts at point. Why is Gordon not in your starting 5?

Barring injury or academic concerns, Collier not likely to redshirt.

Doubt we see a redshirt at all, but King possible I suppose.

We are a year away. Guard play is still suspect.

We we will be good but scoring enough points will be a challenge at times.

None of the guards transformed or significantly improved their games. However, lots to like in the play of dustin/fletch. They looked good. Dom is going to have to be a difference maker if this team is going to make significant waves

- Fortune is a stud. He is going to be a great addition when he's eligible next year.

- XJ looked really good on the defensive side of the ball.

-As has been said, Ski is still not a PG unfortunately.

-Talton however is and he looked really good to me today.

Everyone is saying ski is not a pg. Why? Did he turn the ball over a lot? Did he miss open cutters? Please elaborate for those of us unable to make it.

Not sure how anyone made any judgments about Collier while he was sitting on the end of the bench or riding a bicycle with an ankle injury.

Anyway, I liked a lot of what I saw this morning. Biggest issue I saw was that players aren't coming hard to the ball to receive passes. Resulted in a lot of jumped passing lanes. That might be something as simple as the intensity level when it's more of a casual exhibition than a real practice.

I wasn't loving Ski today. That was a main thing I was looking for and he still settles for way too many long-range 2pt jump shots. One time I saw him run to a spot for an open catch & shoot, but show really bad court awareness by picking his spot 18 feet from the basket instead of 20 feet. He needs to play smarter than that. They all do. I'm being critical because he's a senior. He was also put on the team that didn't have Josh or XJ, so he was forced to put too much of the offense on his own shoulders, too. Without those guys, it wasn't necessarily a great look at what he can do as a PG.

Highlight was Josh Scott. He's so good. One blocked shot had me out of my seat because it looked like there was absolutely no way he could recover and defend without committing a foul. It was a thing of beauty. Also, showed some moves off the dribble getting points from the wing.

Wes hit a 3 pointer. He'll make some shots this year. He's a nice complement to Josh and XJ since he can get his without spending much time with the ball in his hands.

XJ looked like he has a more compact stroke. Looks good. Still not finishing consistently at the rim.

Fletch looks so good at times. Reminds me of Carlon when he's confident.

Miller's fierce. May have trouble staying out of foul trouble, but we don't need him to play 30 minutes. He's got a body that guys just bounce off of without moving him.

Dustin has a very high ceiling as a scorer. King showed a lot today, too. (I bet he surprised some people.) The thing with both of them is that they are still learning how to be effective when they're not the focal point of the offense. Would be early selections in a Buffs pickup game, but I don't know if they'll find their way into the 8-man rotation despite the ability.

Eli was very solid. Hit shots and looked good.

XT is a good basketball player. I still see him as a knockdown shooter instead of a PG, though.

Fortune is the real deal folks. Best shooter the program has had since Levi. Gonna make the loss of Ski so much easier to deal with next year.

Last, Dom didn't play but as you might have gathered from what I posted above there is a big opportunity for him this year or for J-Hop (who handled well and also looks like he has a better, more compact shooting stroke.) We need someone to be a Nate Tomlinson for us. I'm having trouble seeing that unselfish orchestration of things coming from Ski. And I don't think that XT can break down a defense off the dribble like we need from the primary ball handler. I think J-Hop is the most likely candidate to be able to be all of that, having not seen Dom yet.

This team has a high ceiling, I think. Looks like they can defend any type of team and rebound well. Also looks like a better shooting team than what we saw last year post-Mayor. Guys have improved. Biggest question is whether it gels for offensive efficiency and the much-needed breakthrough on assist/turnover ratio.

Tad promised me that DT would be un-guardable this year. I didn't think it would be because he would spend all his time on the bench.

This team definitely has a lot of potential. One concern of mine was the shot selection from both teams, but it might be due to some combinations on the court that might not play together much, and I think/hope that will improve with more practices under their belt.

I think our best lineup (without seeing Dom) will be XT Ski XJ Wes Jelly. I would rather if we didn't have two small guards starting together for defensive purposes, but our offense runs so much better with XT in there. We need to get Scott the ball as much as possible and hope that he has improved his passing out of double teams. He looks even more dominant than last year.

Would have liked to have seen the scrimmage this morning, pumped to see this years team.

As to starting 5, Teams are going to try to push him around and get physical with him since very few will have big men close to skilled enough to deal with him.

We need to have Wes or Miller out there with him to force the physical stuff a different direction.

Were any of us expecting Ski to have morphed into a true point guard? That doesn't really ever happen at this level. If XT is improved (and by every account I've heard, there's encouraging news on that front) we'll be fine.

Boyle likes XT's game.
"Xavier Talton I thought really was kind of the glue guy that made the difference for the Black team," Boyle said. "(He) really got his team going and made simple plays. I like guys who just make the game simple."

So was the new offense on display?

It was definitely different. Looked much more like watching the NBA. Not the NBA teams with a ball-stopping star like the Lakers or Knicks, but the more up-tempo style with ball movement to get a 3 or a good 1-on-1 matchup. Also, attacking the rim.

Work in progress, though. It's looking more like pick-up basketball than the Spurs at this point.

With Scott on the floor and XJ on the floor and Ski on the floor along with one of the other wings scoring should not be a problem, the issue might be getting them enough touches.

Tad loves guys who will do the dirty work, who will put the team ahead of themselves, and still can be enough of an offensive threat to contribute when they have to and to force the defense to at least respect them. XT fits this description to a tee. He is tough, he will play defense, he will pass the ball, set picks and generally do what it takes for his team to be successful.

Unless he isn't performing expect to see a lot of XT this year

XT earned valuable minutes last season after SD went down. He looked very good yesterday, clearly under control and a floor leader as a true point should be.

Another good thing is that Fortune is the real deal. XT won't face too many opponents this year who are Fortune's equal, but XT will face Fortune every day in practice! That live practice experience will only enhance all the work XT put in over the off-season.

Mtn didn't watch the buffs last year.

Watched quite a bit of Buffs BB last year, and the prior couple of years including Tad playing Chen and others.

Given a choice Tad would probably prefer to have five NBA lottery picks on the floor but that isn't happening.

XT averaged the fifth highest number of minutes on the team last year including the games Spencer played despite only averaging about 5 points per game. Hopkins, Thomas, and Fletcher all averaged fewer minutes despite being arguably more capable offensive players.

It's hard to see a situation where XT is not solidly in the top 5 for minutes per game this year.

I am talking about your comment about scoring not being a problem. Even with the guys you mentioned, scoring was a problem last year.

It's going to be a different system. And players like XT, Josh Scott, Tre'Shaun Fletcher, Dustin Thomas and Xavier Johnson have gotten better. I think defense is probably more of a concern with this team

From that standpoint I do agree. The problem I saw last year was that we tended to have those infuriating dead periods when we looked like a team that had never been coached in running an offense. In those times we would often see a swing of 10-15 points in favor of our opponents.

I don't know how we solve that problem but having a guy who is willing to work and do the dirty work offensively can't hurt.

That said if we can't be effective scoring with the guys we have available this year then maybe we have found the ***** in Tad's armor.

That is why I am excited to see if we had any offensive changes. I could have sworn our offense last year was to pass the ball on the perimeter for 25 seconds in order to save energy for defense. At some point tad needs to get more than average offensive production out of his recruits.

Interesting.... Were guys rotating and cutting or was it more ball movement by quick passes? The "idea" always seemed to be to try to create iso's by ball movement or catch a guy out of position on a rotation. None of this really worked b/c the ball didn't move fast enough and with slow ball movement and no cutters you're pretty easy to defend. One of XJ's comments made it seem like CU was going full on motion offense, did it seem like that was at all happening or possibly the intent?
