Annual Offseason Thread -- What sports should CU add?

Now that CU is within good Title IX standing, it's going to stay there. What that means is that any sports that get added on the Men's side have to be balanced with Women's sports scholarships that keep things even.

You can find the scholarship limits per sport here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_I_(NCAA)

Mix and match to lay out your favorite plan for CU varsity expansion. Only rule is that your scholarship total for Men can't be more than your scholarship total for Women. If you want to make it more than a fantasy list, give some thought to travel costs, conference affiliation, fan interest, potential to win a championship at CU, and the need for new facilities in your selection.

Here are the sports CU doesn't offer and whether they have a conference affiliation with the Pac-12:

SportScholarships
Men'sBaseball (P12)11.7
Fencing4.5
Gymnastics (P12)6.3
Ice Hockey18.0
Lacrosse12.6
Rifle3.6
Soccer (P12)9.9
Swimming & Diving (P12)9.9
Tennis (P12)4.5
Volleyball (P12)4.5
Water Polo (P12)4.5
Wrestling (P12)9.9
*Rowing & Rugby sponsored by Pac-12, but not NCAA sports for scholarship counts (no limits). I believe that those 2 sports could each be about 10 scholarships for Title IX.
Women'sBowling5.0
Equestrian15.0
Fencing5.0
Field Hockey (P12)12.0
Gymnastics (P12)12.0
Ice Hockey18.0
Rowing (P12)20.0
Rugby (P12)12.0
Sand Volleyball (P12)6.0
Softball (P12)12.0
Swimming & Diving (P12)14.0
Triathlon3.5
Water Polo (P12)8.0

Because you want all money to go to facilities until they're up to snuff?

I'm kind of assuming that facilities would be funded through donation while new sports could get funded through operating revenue.

Hockey, ****ing obviously

But more realistically, swimming, both M&F

I'm really liking the idea of Triathlon. I think CU is an instant dynasty in that. Brand new NCAA sport, so no established powers.

I also think Sand Volleyball would be fun for fans and good for the WVB program. It would be a good spring spectator sport.

9.5 scholarships on the Women's side could let CU sneak in Men's Soccer (9.9) or a combination of Tennis (4.5) and Volleyball (4.5).

For Men's sports that wouldn't require facilities, the ones I want the most are Lacrosse, Soccer and Wrestling. The path to get those is likely going to include Women's Rowing and its 20 scholarships (you award in-state girls who made honor roll & all-state teams... then teach them to row).

Baseball. Although I recognize it's probably unrealistic due to cost, but it's pathetic we don't have a baseball team.

Lax would be second for me.

Yeah, I just don't think it would be the best use of our money. Football and basketball can carry the rest of the AD, so we need to get those as close to maximizing the revenue we can and invest more in those (well, really more the CEC since we've got the football stuff going).

To echo CUfan, the fact that we are the only Pac 12 school w/o a baseball team is embarrassing.

Brought to you by Howdy Dong

CU needs something to occupy this fan base during the spring. Something that gets on TV and is revenue positive would be nice.

+1 on this. Triathlon and Sand Volleyball are the clear best choices on the women's side. Men's soccer on the other side of the balance sheet.

Men: Volleyball and Baseball
Women: Sand Volleyball and Softball

Yes, I have ulterior motives.

Baseball, softball, men's lax, women's triathlon, field hockey.

Agree with others it's embarrassing we're the only P12 school without baseball. Plus college baseball and softball games are a lot of fun to go to.

Wish: Title XIV proponents stop fighting against competitive cheer-leading becoming a scholarship sport.

none of those will generate revenue or much TV coverage. so, if we assume expansion is necessary, i'd advocate for these criteria:

low spend by university to maintain sport
increases athletic participation among CU students who are not currently participating in varsity sports

I think that makes these most attractive:
Men's:
fencing
tennis

Womens'
triathalon
softball (this actually has potential to drive TV coverage)

Fantasy: Hockey, Field Hockey, M&W swimming, M&W diving, M&W water polo, baseball and softball - in that order.

Reality: Men's wrestling, ladies triathalon & sand volleyball.

It's a good discussion to have in the context of how the next round of facilities upgrades will be conducted. How Balch is re-purposed will have a great deal of influence on what kind of sports can be added. A mirrored look on the NW corner of Folsom would be able to hold lockers, offices, and potentially even small venues for some kinds of new sports. For instance, if it gets integrated somehow into the rec center facility, perhaps that's a place where a new pool facility can be put in. Wrestling and fencing could take place in a newly renovated Balch.
Bottom line is that whatever we decide to do with the next round of facilities upgrades should be done with an eye towards specific expansion in varsity sports.

I really like the concept of repurposing Carlson and the field house as an aquatic center with diving and Olympic swimming. Whether the concept is physically or economically feasible is an entirely different issue.

for context in this discussion, here's a list of club sports for which CU has organized play. does anyone know which are drawing students to participate the most?

Darth -- CU already has varsity soccer.

What is the requirement to be in compliance, by my count the scholarship numbers still stand at 121.4 men's and 84 women's. I haven't dug into Title IX to see what is an acceptable disparity.
