CU Men Chasing Third Straight Championship

As also noted below, schedule of races, both being held Saturday, November 21st, are - women's race at 10:00; men's at 11:00. (All times converted to mountain time; Louisville is in eastern time zone, so local times of races are 2 hours later.) Note- these are the corrected start times. I originally had them incorrectly starting 1/2 hour later.

BOULDER — Folks who follow Colorado’s standout cross country program noticed a new name — sort of — in the mix for the CU men at last weekend’s NCAA Mountain Region meet.

New because he hadn’t raced this year. Not so new because Ben Saarel is a two-time All-American who has been an integral part of the Buffs’ two consecutive NCAA championships — and will now have a role Saturday when Mark Wetmore’s crew seeks a three-peat in Louisville, Ky.
...
“Our teams are ready, they’re healthy, they know what to expect at this particular venue,” Wetmore said. “I don’t see anybody that looks green around the gills, that they’ve raced too much.”

One advantage the Buffs will have over some of the other teams is that they competed in the NCAA Pre-Nationals on the same course earlier this year. While the championships distance is slightly longer — the men will run 10K instead of 8K and the women will run 6K instead of 5K — they’re still familiar with some of the course nuances.

And if Wetmore has any concerns, it’s one of those course nuances.

“Honestly, what keeps me awake is a pileup,” Wetmore said. “This course has some narrow places, some sort of invisible ditches if you’re not in the lead. But of course you can’t win the whole race by sprinting to the lead. Then you can see the ditches but your race is over in a half a mile. My real concern is a pileup.”

At the Pre-Nationals, Wetmore said, there was a pileup in all six races held that day. The Buffs escaped relatively unscathed, but did have a runner who required stitches in his shin after getting caught briefly in one of the pileups.

“While they were searching for sutures, there was a guy in there getting his back stitched up from getting trampled,” Wetmore said. “That’s what’s keeping me awake.”

Saturday's races begin with the women's race at 10 a.m., followed by the men's competition at 11 a.m. Both events will be streamed live on NCAA.com.

1st cubuffs.com article (see OP) came out about the championships came out today, so thought I'd use this as the championship thread so more info can be added as the week goes on leading up to the BIG races Saturday morning.

With it being ~ 23 hours until the women will be toeing the starting line at 10:00 MT, cubuffs.com has released another article for the championships that includes quotes from Coach Wetmore's part of CU's weekly press day earlier this week- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210514203 .

Men's (They're predicting/ guesstimating 6 Buffs finish in top 40- Murphy 10th, Pearson 16th, Moussa 19th, Saarel 25th, Dressel 36th and Winter 40th) - http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/25...rojections-Whos-Finishing-Top-40#.Vk9jfXarTIU

I just noticed I screwed up the race start times in the OP, so will fix them momentarily. The women's race is starting 10:00 AM MT (NOT 10:30), and the men take off at 11:00 MT (Not 11:30).

Exiting day for the defending national champion #1 men's team and the #2 in the nation women's team.

Lock and load!

Let's go Buffs!!! Maybe they can complete the sweep winning both titles.

Congrats to our fellow Colorado school Adams State for having just won the women's D2 National Championships (In Joplin MO) in the 1st race completed on XC Championship Saturday.

(Looks VERY overcast- with the Buffaloes (and buffaloes) known as great mudders, let the skies fall!)

...and Wasted State comes in fifth, a good day for the Colorado schools.

The live stream is now live.

Note- For those who don't follow the sport that closely, one thing to look for is this course is noted for some narrow and/ or dippy areas that seems to lead to falls and pile-ups. Hopefully the Buffs avoid those in their races!

A minute or two until the women take off!!!

Looks like it's still a pretty big pack at 10 minutes, although it's spreading out a little bit.

At 2K, the Buffs were back in 7th, although they are known for starting slow and then picking off opponents later in the race. There are no Buffs in the top 4-5 in the individual race.

Clark 11th, Benner 16th, Alm 47th, Jones 49th, Nun 65th. (Looks like it MAY be good enough for 2nd? I think I may have missed one of the Buffs- as the UNOFFICIAL live scorer has them with 129 points, with Oregon next with 215.)

As expected, dominating performance by New Mexico. The have 49 points.

Looks like the 5 above are the Buffs top finishers. (Forgot that they don't count runners running individually in calculating team totals, which is why the Buffs only (unofficially) have 129 points while their total places would indicate they'd have more points that that.)

CONGRATS to the BUFFS- They performed GREAT today with an overall young team! (I believe Ms. Alm is the only Buff running today who is a senior.)

Also, nice day for the Pac with the Ducks getting 3rd.

Hope the mobile camera on the golf cart is up and running for the men's coverage.

While we wait for the men's race, check out this article about international recruiting. Wetmore gives exactly zero ****s:

"'I believe that I can have a self-respectable level of success while sticking to American teen age recruits. I guess other coaches don’t feel they can. When I was a teenager, the cool guys in town built their fast, sexy cars in their own garages; the dorks had their fathers buy them at the Camaro dealership,' Wetmore told Sullivan over email."

"'The point I want to make is, people say, ‘you don’t recruit internationally,” and I say, ‘we’ll that’s not true, I only don’t recruit from countries that don’t have a reciprocal system,’ and they say ‘oh ok well that makes sense and they say who are they?’ and I say, ‘none.’ Nobody else in the world will give away these resources,' Wetmore added."

Burn!

Forgot to say- congrats to Buff junior Erin Clark for her 2nd consecutive All-American honor, and sophomore Kaitlyn Benner for her 1st honor. And, although she just missed All-American honors at 47th, Maddie Alm saved her best race for last (after 51th last year). Also, great job by frosh Dani Jones, who wasn't racing with Ms. Alm most of the year, but obviously did today finishing only 2 places behind her.

And, the Men's race is off!!!!

Back to NCAA D-2 for a minutes, congrats in order for a couple Colorado schools, as School of Mines and Adams State end up 1-2 in the Men's team race.

Syracuse 5 are bunched up front

Looks like it's going to be a quick race for the men, as one of the individual runners (Tiernan from Villanova, whose team didn't qualify) tries to push it out hard trying to get the individual glory by taking away the kick of dominant individual favorite Edward Cheserek from Oregon. (The men are noted for normally running sit and kick races.)

Buffs only 3rd after 2K, but it's WAY too early to worry about. Syracuse, considered one of the Buff's 2 main challengers (with Stanford), is leading.
