CSU loss at Northern Colorado

ICYMI: CSU lost to UNC today by a 73-64 score.

That's 4 straight D1 losses for the Rams.

Figuring there'd be a meltdown of Ram fans, I took a look at their message board tonight. Sounds like they had a problem with their bus after the game. After bitching out the team, Larry Eustachy allegedly ditched the players, coaches and administrators in attendance to wait for the replacement bus and got his own ride home.

This thing sounds like it is going up in flames and it also sounds like there's no way they could afford to buyout his contract.

Rumors are that Eustacy is a SOB and treats the players like garbage. He is a helluva coach, but it is hard to tolerate that when losing.

Not a body language expert but Gillon did not like Eustachy shouting expletives at him in our game. He came out soft and did not seem to care after that.

Why do we play at CSU and AFA?

They are part of a minor conference but UNC is a D1 program.

Bad comparison. CSU is a good road game most of the time and serves a purpose, i.e. get the team in front of a hostile atmosphere early in the season. The MWC is a good basketball conference whose teams don't need to schedule a road game with a Big Sky opponent 30 minutes away whose arena seats 2k.

Sounds like a leadership problem similar to the Buffs last year. That is an issue when you don't recruit any four year players to establish a good culture on the team.

Their basketball season doesn't start until they play the buffs. If they lose to the buffs, it doesn't start until next year's game.

The AFA game is a comparable. Our home attendance vs. the attendance @AFA is comparable to CSU home attendance vs. @UNC. Both are a bus road game against a team that is D1 but should be a win against a team that won't have a high RPI.

Why the hell would CSU play @ UNC in the first place?

West of the Mississippi, D1 hoops scheduling, especially for low and mid majors, is a real challenge.

I would think, trying to put my head into a CSU worldview (hard to do), the UNC game is a d1 game which should be a win and is nearby. I would think that they would want to minimize cost and keep it regional... Helps with recruiting (if you win).

They play in the MWC, so Wyo, UNM, Utah State, AFA, who all are a drive or short flight away, are already on the schedule. BYU isn't on their schedule, not in small part because they only recently left the MWC for the WCC. BYU plays a pretty national OOC schedule anyway. They probably would like to play UU and CU, but they aren't a position to dictate scheduling to Pac-12 teams. Then, as far as "local" d1 games go, you've got DU. DU played Wyo and AFA and lost both, they probably don't want three MWC teams in the same recruiting area because they would like lose to all three. After DU, you've got Big Sky teams- Weber, SUU, Montana, Montana State and UNC. One of those games allows you to sleep in your own bed, and it should be a win. They just melted down.

CSU loves to whine about history and local games whenever the RMS football game comes up, I supposed they have to be a least a little true to that philosophy and play their equivalent little brother. Why they went to Greeley, I don't know. Maybe a 2 for 1 scheduling deal?

I suppose thats why the play the game.

UPDATE: Per this article, the game in Greeley was part of the deal for UNC football to come to Fort Collins next year

This part makes sense plus as mentioned it "should" be an easy win giving them a D1 road win to pad the record.

Was he drunk?
He's been a happy drunk in the past, from the looks of it.

I'll submit 'quaaludes' for my guess.

Eustacy used to remind me of John Ritter from three's company.

But after that presser, he's channeling Harrison Ford on a morphine drip.

Why the hell would CSU play @ UNC in the first place?

They've done a home and home with unc for years.....I played there in 05-06 and we had csu at home. IIRC that's uncs first d1 win.....CSU will probably hurt us this year more than anything.

"We came here because it tied into a football contract. It's a death trap..I mean...this is the most important game of the year for Northern Colorado and it's hard to get your team to understand that."

The last 20 seconds of that Eustachy video is GOLD, JERRY! GOLD!

And yet, somehow, when CU was faced with the same set of circumstances in their game at Moby, they responded by kicking the living sh.it out of the goats.

Things that make you go "hmmmmmm".

Gian Clavell is expected to miss the rest of the season with a broken hand.

And it sounds like things are imploding within the CSU program:

I'm starting to think that CSU will end up being about our 6th or 7th best non-conference win once this all shakes out.

I also could see Eustachy fixing it. He's a bastard but he's a good hoops coach. Not sure the patients will take over the asylum.

And if he doesn't fix it this year he will find a bunch of transfers and JC kids and turn over his roster for next year. He isn't known for being patient.

Exactly. I have bet against Larry the Lizard before. He survives nukes and comes back quick.

I don't know. Missed the Dance last year and this is the follow-up. Let's just say that the trajectory is not good.
