Three football players punished
Athletes suspended from team over allegations of brawling

Saturday, August 4, 2007

Three University of Colorado football players have been suspended from the team because of allegations of brawling, said sports information director Dave Plati.

Michael Sipili, 19, a sophomore inside linebacker from Hawaii who started in two games last season, has been indefinitely suspended from the team after his arrest this week in connection with a June fight, Plati said Friday.

Chris Perri, 20, a sophomore defensive tackle, has been suspended for the first three games of the season after his alleged role in the same June brawl as well as a July arrest after police said he fought with another CU football player, Taj Kaynor.

Kaynor, a 21-year-old defensive tackle, has been suspended for one game.

Sipili was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree assault and criminal mischief. He is out of jail on bond.

He is accused of tackling and punching 22-year-old CU student John Antrim numerous times in the early hours of June 16 after Antrim attempted to help friend James Terry, who was brawling with Sipili’s friend Perri, according to a police report.

Antrim suffered three facial fractures that required surgery in late June, the report said. He said he’s seeking the advice of a lawyer and wouldn’t comment.

Sipili and his attorney, Lou Rubino, could not be reached for comment Friday.

The investigation took nearly seven weeks because Boulder police had to conduct numerous interviews, the report said.

A female friend who was with Antrim on June 16 said Sipili was “not the first to throw a punch, but definitely not the last,” the report said.

According to the report, Antrim was walking home from Cosmo’s Pizza with Terry and three female friends near 11th about 12:45 a.m. when they passed a group of males, the report said.

One of the women confronted Perri after he said something that offended her, she told police.

That led to the confrontation between Perri and Terry, police said.

Perri did not return a phone message left by the Camera.

Sipili earned honorable mention Freshman All-America honors by The Sporting News last season, and he would have entered the fall as the top middle inside linebacker, according to the CU athletic Web site.

Our kids have to be taught to just walk away. I don't disagree with a suspension. But the kid doesnt deserve to be kicked out or lose an entire year.

How badly was the victim hurt?

**** - this is just plain stupid on all counts - the players and the non-players. A meaningless incident escalates and seriously impacts lives. With players that have such bright futures, how ****ing hard is it to understand that you avoid issues for 4-5 years while in college for the potential of a big payoff afterwards?

I was really looking forward to watching Sippili play - but depending on the facts - he should get a punishment that fits the crime. I have faith that Hawk will send a strong message to the rest of the team with this one.

I think Perri gets one more chance. The school year hasn't even started and he's been in two fights already. I think he should be done for the year if he screws up again. CU is already under a microscope. We don't need this from our players.

Dammit, dammit, dammit. First Gates doesn't qualify yet and now this.

I trust Hawk will do the right thing. It's not fair, and it's not easy, but these kids have got to learn to walk away from situations like that. Especially in Boulder where they are under a microscope.

It hurts, but if Sipili is gone for the year, so be it. You can't beat up a guy like that and have no consequences.

Look the players deserve punishment, but this entire thing looks like bull****. Sure, they needed to walk away from idiots trying to fight them, but the other two guys are definitely at fault too. One thing I can't stand at bars is watching a bunch of spoiled, arrogant pieces of **** that think they're so ****ing tough. They get into all these stupid push fights, and have to be taken out of the bars...

...I bet the two guys that were fighting Perri and Sipili were assholes. Apparently Perri offended one of the girls with a comment, but that **** happens all the time - not to excuse it. But from a guy's perspective, know your ****ing place and stop being full of idiotic pride. Perri started ****, these guys escalated it, and Sipili ended it.

All parties are at fault here. Not just the football players, and it's annoying that only the football players are going to get cast in a bad light by the media. Punishment seems warranted and it seems that Hawk is on top of it - but what about the douches that actually thought they could fight Perri and Sipili? They're talking to a ****ing lawyer??...they fought and are at blame too!

I agree with that, but the FB players need to hold themselves to a higher standard. It's not fair, but they're walking around Boulder with targets on their backs. And if that means walking away from some drunk frat boys who think they're tough guys, so be it.

Much like many fights, it sounds like the women escalated it, and then stepped back to watch the carnage.

doesn't matter. They need to just walk away. They will always have a target on their backs. The sooner they figure out that people will try to start **** with them the better. I don't care what the other idiots did, I don't pay $50 to watch them play football. I do care what Sipilli and Perri did. Their actions reflect on the University itself and they NEED TO KNOW THAT. Life ain't fair.

When I was in school I don't recall there being a bunch of guys looking to pick fights with groups of football players. I would speculate that when the girl got in Perri's face for making whatever comment he made, he probably insulted her even more. That made the poor bastard she was with feel obligated to respond, even though he knew he would get stomped.

Sipilli dished out more than one black-eye that evening.

The connection with Hawaiian football players under Cabral at CU is supposed to be one of those feel-good special interest stories. It's a shame that Sipilli's bad behavior ends up letting down his team mates, his mentors, his coaches, his family, the larger CU community and himself.

Sipilli - it's time to do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around.

CU's leadership has put a lot of energy in to turning over a new-leaf with the goal of restoring respectibility and accountability to this program. Coming so soon after the NCAA meal gate sanction, it's a shame to see brawling added to the list of stains on the 2007 season. Student athletes are accountable for their end of the bargain.

As a fan and supporter of the 2007 football season, this is like getting a dent in the fender a new car. This will get hammered out in time for the opening game. After that first dent, the new-car smell fades pretty fast.

Other players on the team have an opportunity to step up. I have no doubt that the weight training, practices, hard work and more time under Hawks new system will result in a better season than last. It's pre-season, and last I checked, we're still in the hunt for a division title and a Bowl Game. Every championship team overcomes some form of diversity.

Shoulder to Shoulder....

"know your ****ing place". Excellent advice, and if the players had just followed it with respect to the woman who got the offensive comment from them, none of this happens. Sorry, I'm not buying the idea that everybody is equally at fault here. If somebody offends a friend of mine, I'm going to defend them. If the other person is a man, they apologize and walk away. Instead, we have the players 1> making offensive comments to a women and 2> escalating the situation to a brawl instead of apologizing. Which is where your other excellent advice "stop being full of idiotic pride" comes in. I hope Hawk does send a strong message here. Not necessarily kicking Sipili out, as some have suggested - who among us didn't do at least one stupid thing in college, doesn't mean our education had to end, but we did have to learn from the consequences. But part of Hawk's job in restoring CU football is restoring the pride in the team amongst the students and fans, as well as among the team. These guys need to learn that being a Buff is something to be proud of, and they need to learn to treat that honor with the respect it deserves. Mouthing off to random women and brawling with their friends is not the way to do that... :sad2:

Where have I heard that before? Is that an Adolph Rupp quote??

I believe you may have meant to say "some form of adversity"???

It's truely a gift to mess up on the last word of the friggin post. ****.
Must have been channeling Rupp or Yogi Berra.

Until I get paid for these opinions, I am now adopting a policy of incompetence when it comes to adequate grammar, word choice, punctuation and spelling. What do you expect for free?

One thing that I don't understand. Sipili is suspended indefinitely, but the woman of the other party stated that he didn't throw the first or last punch. In fact, the article states he went into the fight after a second guy apparently started fighting with Perri...which I'm sure all, or at least most, of us guys would do (help a friend fighting two other guys).

Fights suck - especially when it starts over a girl...and drinking is way more fun without violence. However, fights happen - that's just a fact of life, and if you get your ass beat, you get your ass beat. That's one important reason why sometimes, you don't fight 6-2 270lb guys unless you REALLY know your **** AND there's a really important and noble reason for doing so. Why is this guy is talking to a lawyer? Everyone was probably drunk and not in the best state of mind...and he's thinking of suing or pressing charges? He's at fault too.

Sackman and someone else made a good point that yes, our football team does have a target on their back, so yeah - they do have to be extra careful and man up by walking away. That still does not excuse the other parties involved in my opinion. Hawk should suspend as he sees fit, but I really hope this guy doesn't end up taking Perri and Sipili to court...he helped start the fight and he got his ass handed to him - that's one of the potential consequences of fighting...

no cu football player should be throwing any punch ever....

the attitude they need to have is to laugh at these people who chide them....... laugh and walk away..... these schmucks are not worth it.

What concerns me the most about this is that Sipili is facing 2nd Degree Assault charges, a felony charge in Colorado.

(2) (a) If assault in the second degree is committed under circumstances where the act causing the injury is performed upon a sudden heat of passion, caused by a serious and highly provoking act of the intended victim, affecting the person causing the injury sufficiently to excite an irresistible passion in a reasonable person, and without an interval between the provocation and the injury sufficient for the voice of reason and humanity to be heard, it is a class 6 felony.

(b) If assault in the second degree is committed without the circumstances provided in paragraph (a) of this subsection (2), it is a class 4 felony.

If it's a class 4, then missing the season is the least of his concerns at this point...

hopefully, the message sinks in. sipili has a rs year available, so maybe a year off will get him refocused.

they are held to a higher standard than avg students, fair or unfair. hawkins didn't have a choice but to come down hard.

we aren't the fuskers.

Sure you can. You can beat him up, and smack his girlfriend up, and then resist arrest with a one game suspension.

Wait, that is NU justice. Our guy will be out for many games if not the year, and possibly forever.

this is not good, and I can speak to the whooping this kid likely took, I have a titanium right orbital from a fight in college it caused me to spend 4 days in boulder hospital, if this kid really did get beat like that and is a normal size guy I don't see anything wrong with suspending Sipili pending the out come of the trial.

In fact I think we should, and our ability to do these kinds of things is what will allow CU to rise above some of the adversity that has plagued us recently, I also think this and Mack brown's actions compared with NU's really show where hill-billy and in time his program will end up morally.

Sweet, more ammunition for the Hill Association. I'm personally blaming the brand new two tabled patio at Mamacita's for these latest shenanigans.

If the trial outcome holds with or near what's accused I'm fine with a severe punishment. We don't need another Rae Carruth slipping through the system/hiding in the trunk.
